Re: Colgate 2014-15
This was not an easy game, but we got the job done.
After a solid 1st period, we were just awful in the 2nd. Yes, absolutely awful. After getting an early power play, Kyle Baun took a foolish penalty, making it 4x4. Then not long after that, Tyler Sikura scores to cut the deficit in half. Had Baun not taken that penalty, it would have still been 2-0 'Gate for probably a good part of the 2nd period. Then before the halfway mark of the 2nd, the Big Green tie it up. My stress levels start increasing dramatically, thinking we were going to find a way to lose. The 3rd period was a bit more even, but we still had a flare for the dramatics. With just under 4 min. to go, we take a too many men penalty, we kill it off, then take ANOTHER penalty. Dartmouth gets a 6x4 after pulling the goalie. But then they take a penalty, and while it halted their momentum at the time, they almost scored an EAG to tie it, which would get reviewed - when the clock hits zero! Colgate is celebrating what looks like a victory, only to find out the game may not in fact be over yet. But the referee comes out of the review box, signals no goal, and we can finally exhale.
This game was very similar to Game 2 of our quarterfinal series against St. Lawrence last year. We were sloppy at times, but we ultimately took the lead for good in the 3rd period and "hung on" for the win. Also, two of our three goals came from Spiro Goulakos and Mike Borkowski (who scored the eventual game-winner). When it looked like both of these players would be done for the year back in January, they come back and they are the reason we are going back to Lake Placid! However, we still have unfinished business back at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena. The team should treat next weekend as a business trip. Hoisting the Whitelaw Cup may be our only route back into the NCAA's.
I will be making the trip back to Lake Placid next weekend. A few weekends ago, NBC was doing live reports during intermissions of NHL games in honor of the 35th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice. It is such a beautiful place, and I'm very excited to be going back there - hopefully seeing another 2 wins for the Maroon & White!
