Re: Colgate 2014-15

A Husky fan's perspective: Your view of the game was exactly the same as mine, watching it live from 10 rows off the ice. St. Cloud is a poised, veteran team with plenty of speed, and Colgate dominated the first period. Our "new" goaltender Charlie Lindgren (saw action in 10 games as a freshman last year) did well to keep the score 2-0 in that period. Second period the home team came back strong, but your goalie Finn was excellent. The only criticism of your team would be the penalties--most of them unnecessary--but SCSU only scored on one of PP's.

Colgate seemed to be the more physical team. One of the unknowns with SCSU is the defense. For the most part, the Huskies played OK defensively, but I would think one of the pairings will be split up tonight. Our "star quality" guy, forward Mike Brodzinski, was frustrated and didn't have a grade-A game. That seldom happens two games in a row, so watch #22 tonight. SCSU hasn't been swept much at all for the past 3 seasons, so tonight will be a challenge for the Raiders.

But with their performance last night, Colgate certainly has a good shot at a sweep. SCSU has played quite a few Eastern teams in the past, and your team looked at least as good--if not better--than Quinnipiac and Union looked in the past two years.

It is really hard to be critical of the ECAC and East Hockey (the evil Western Bias) when you see those teams in person. Good luck (well, NOT tomorrow!) the rest of the way. Colgate looked very much like a team that should be in the top 5 in the nation.

Thanks Boomer, always good to see what non Gate eyes perceive. I realize we are all on cloud nine so it's especially refreshing to get an opinion from the opponent.

Back at ya...the Huskies also are a tremendous team deserving top ten rankings. Great series, great teams, may the best team get the breaks tonight.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Boomer, how can you confuse Michael with Jonny? Michael plays for the Gophers.

I know, I know. I am so old that I remember Jonny and Mike's Dad, Mike Sr. Mike Sr. led the then Div. III Huskies to a third place in the nation trophy. Some guy by the name of Herb Brooks was his coach . . .

JONNY Brodzinski is the guy I meant to say. And, BTW, Jonny B. got the hattrick in a 3-1 win tonight. (Just like I warned our Colgate friends in yesterday's post :))

Re: Colgate 2014-15

We looked tired.

That will happen when you're not used to playing on an olympic sheet.

Oddly enough, this happened to us last March in the ECAC Championship game against Union.

As for me, I'm fine with going 1-1 against another preseason top 10 team. Up next, another two games against the Huskies ... the Northeastern Huskies, that is. Focus on one game at a time.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Holding steady at #6 this week. Credit to Union, which has built a dynasty that it won't soon relinquish...and Cornell, which is always ranked regardless! Last season, Union was nearly flawless and clicked to perfection. I don't know that we have that...I am not a fan of the preseason expectations and hate pressure.
Hoped for a sweep, glad for the split, but disappointed with Saturday's performance. Leadership and discipline were missing. Defeat will come easy if we can't stay out of the box or capitalize on special teams; Union only had 6 (SIX!) losses last year. The PWR begins the first weekend, ready or not. A part of me feels we still need to prove we are deserving of the hype and must sweep at home next weekend, no excuses.

I agree wholeheartedly, hope Spink comes back this weekend. I heard some not so good rumors.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I chalked up Saturday with travel and the big sheet. I don't know how Union moved up so much with the two wins they got. Neither team is something to write home about. I can't believe St. Cloud moved down, and I was hoping for a small bump maybe 4-5 but we will just have to perform.

Also don't forget we were missing spink but if he is out long term we could be in trouble

Re: Colgate 2014-15

The more and more I read about Northeastern the more I think we definitely need a sweep this weekend. A lot of different people saying they have good goaltending and that's about it. From the NU thread they seem to believe that they only got by last year with some luck and goaltending and that it can't sustain. Apparently they are getting dominated in the games. Vermont was a lot better Saturday at Northeastern in all categories I read. Would love to see Gate win both of these. A tie should be the worst we get this weekend if we keep the pressure on. Looking forward to the games. We don't need to be Union from last year right now but we can't be Michigan or Miami either.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Northeastern now only receiving votes in the polls. This is a great opportunity to beat a team that plays in a great league. If we are able to sweep this w/e, hopefully N'eastern will resume their winning ways shortly thereafter. Not sure why SCSU dropped and Colgate rose a spot...? Keep the updates coming on Tyler Spink.

I'm not so sure about that(being in trouble that is). In past years it used to be stop Colgate's top line and you win(McIntyre, Austin Smith days). We now have two great lines, and good third and fourth lines. We can roll four now as we have seventeen forwards on the roster. Haven't seen this much depth in a very long time

I am still looking for Joe Wilson to have a breakout year, he's getting a chance with Borkowski and Murphy, I really like this line. Panowych and Peterson fit right in, Freeman impressing.

Is Goulakos doing OK? If so, you'll be fine.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

My biggest worry is the power play without the other tylor. It looked poor last weekend with the bigger sheet which means it should be easier to find some extra space to shoot on the PP.

I think we will do well 5-5 even without spink but need to find something that works on the man advantage.

On that note has anyone heard how serious the injury is?

I have heard something, but no concrete evidence, so. Noone has mentioned we were without one of our best defensemen Saturday night. Kevin Lough was sick, I guess non injury related.

Maybe because we were visiting and a split on the road, especially out west and against another top 10 team is usually considered a good thing? A sweep would have been surreal.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Don’t know what your feelings are towards Chris Wagner but after garnering POW in the A the Anaheim Ducks have called him up today.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

In my opinion, Wagner getting called up to the big leagues could be a boost to our recruiting.

In other news, I made the drive out to Colgate last Saturday to take in the football game vs. Princeton, and I'm a bit disappointed that construction hasn't begun yet on the new rink. I did get a chance to see the new soccer facility, which looks fantastic in my opinion. That said, I'd rather the rink be done right than done fast. With the winter months approaching, it wouldn't be wise to begin construction right now.

As far as this weekend goes, I prefer a sweep, but it won't be easy. Northeastern was in the right in the middle of the Hockey East standings last year, and was on the right side of the PWR bubble until a late-season swoon that saw them get swept by BU, losing out on a top-4 spot in Hockey East, then losing their HE quarterfinal matchup to UNH in 3 games. They've only played 1 game so far so we can't get a good read on them yet, but if we sweep the weekend, it would help is in the PWR down the road.
