Re: Colgate 2013-14

The "Record vs. Common Opponents" comparison compares the winning percentages against each individual team, one by one. It was changed a few years ago so that if Team A had a 2-0 record against Team C, and Team B had a 1-0 record against Team C, Team A would not win the common opponents comparison (it would be equal).

We are 3-0 against SLU (for a 1.000 winning percentage), so winning tonight won't improve our common opponents comparison against Cornell. Cornell, meanwhile, is 2-1 against Clarkson for a .667 winning percentage against the Knights. If Cornell wins tonight, that winning percentage increases to .750. So Cornell can improve their common opponent winning % against us, but we can't improve ours. Best they can do is pull even with us (or pass us if they win and we lose tonight).

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Remember, their game with UMass was cancelled, which actually helps us. If Cornell had won that game, they'd win the PWR comparison with 'Gate (but we would still be 15th in the PWR, but not tied for 13th).
That's funny - Cornell fans are mostly glad that game was cancelled as well, as a tie or loss would have almost dropped us off the bubble completely! The loss would have hurt us way more than a win would have helped us.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

If you don't yet have your tickets for tonight, best to get on the phone to the ticket office, or stop by if you're in Hamilton. They're open from 1-4:30, and then again at 6, but when I called at 1, they were down to "half a dozen" reserved seats, factor in the general admission student/faculty allocations, and if it's not a sellout, it should be pretty darn close. If you wait until 6, you might be out of luck.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

After that first period I am shocked. That was quite possibly the worst period of the season. The third period was very good though, strong tough and you could really tell they wanted it.

Charlie Finn saved the game with those two break away saves on the short handed attempts. Either one of those go in and the mentality of the third could have been quite different

WE'RE GOING TO LAKE PLACID!!!!! How sweep it is!!!!!

Now bring a strong contingent to the game/games this coming weekend Colgate! Lake Placid is beautiful and a wonderful site for hockey and the games deserves to stay there. The stronger the attendance figures the more likely that is to happen ;):D

Don't worry, I plan to be there!

St. Lawrence came out of the gate tonight knowing that their backs were against the wall, so I wasn't surprised that they scored 1:40 into the game. But we stood tall and got the equalizer 42 seconds later. However, for the rest of the 1st period, we looked flat. We took 3 penalties in the opening 20 minutes and SLU scored a power play goal to take the lead.

However, something must have been said in the locker room at the 1st intermission because we got our act together in the 2nd period, then turned on the jets in the 3rd. Once again, SLU made it a one-goal game late in the 3rd, but we stood tall.

We will be playing Quinnipiac in our semifinal matchup. It won't be easy. They also play great team defense. But we will have the last change against them and probably will be playing in the late game on Friday. Also, it's an Olympic sized ice sheet up there. Hopefully we can use this to our advantage.

If you are starting to make plans, according to the ECAC website, Colgate-Quinnipiac will be the nightcap, with a 7:37 pm faceoff. Union will play either Clarkson or Cornell at 4:07.

Do you have a source for this? If so, that's great news!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Things are unfolding in across the nation as top seeds fail to make the final weekend. 3 Lower seeds in the NCHC are going, with North Dakota playing a game three. If Dakota does not win that tournament that takes one at large bid, and if Ferris doesnt win its tournament yet another at large bid goes down. looks like we need to be in the top 13 to get in. This is going to get interesting, right now we are 15th with some additional games to finish tonight.

Anyone have an old school Sioux jersey I can wear for tomorrow?

Edit: I guess if Western Michigan were to win (right now 16th) they would be in the top 16 regardless but still a lot of hockey and scoreboard watching in the coming days.

Wahoo!! My posts have been few & far between this season, since life kinda' took over. But, man, what a season it's been. Go 'gate -- beat Q!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

We got the job done in 2! Hope we can string together some better luck in the ECAC playoffs starting next weekend; we've been snakebitten. Though our first trip to AC was a true Miracle on Ice, thankfully Atlantic City and Albany are sites of the past.

So I ask...did the bye week really help? St. Lawrence looked pretty good to me for having played the prior weekend. They made us earn our badge and we looked uninspired at times despite having home ice and 2 weeks to prepare. Just can't believe we are still the odd man out in the PWR. Not sure I like our chances on the bubble, but Lake Placid...here we come!

Congrats, Colgate!

In my opinion, the bye did help. St. Lawrence had some very talented players and the best power play in the conference. However, I believe they also had the worst penalty kill in the conference. SLU took advantage of our penalty trouble in the 1st period of last night's game, but we took advantage of their penalty trouble in both games, especially the 3rd period of last night. Just because they had a mid-season lull didn't mean they were an easy opponent.

In other news, only Clarkson was nice enough to help us last night. Michigan, Mankato, Vermont, and Northeastern all winning pushed us down to 16th in the PWR, which means Friday is a must-win if we want to make it to the NCAA's. Even if Cornell wins tonight (they dropped to 17th with their loss), it won't flip our comparison with them, so at worst we'll stay 16th. But root root root for Lowell and UNH tonight.

Also, if North Dakota loses tonight, it means an "upset champion" from the NCHC, which means unless you're an autobid, the team that's 15th in the PWR would be out of the tournament.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Well, I got what I wanted, a trip to Placid after a eleven year wait !!! Now we need to win against Q-Pac. One thing at a time, just going to savor this for a day !!!

Remember, "It all starts with the goaltending" !!!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

North Dakota isnt as important of a game for us. If they lose tonight they drop behind us with no more games to play, which means that we would jump a spot in the pairwise. Even though it would be an "upset" autobid, a ND loss would mean that the NCHC doesnt get an additional bid. If Dakota were to move on and win the semi but lose the final there would be a possibility of them getting into the tournament. So IMO it may be good for Dakota to lose tonight locking the number of NCHC bids. We need Ferris State or Minnesota State to win the WCHA though, otherwise that would be another at large bid gone. Minnesota State will be in the top 16 if they win so that shouldnt be a problem. A HUGE game for us will be the Penn State v. Michigan on Thursday afternoon at 2:00pm. If Michigan loses (unlikely, but Penn St did beat them twice this year, 2-2 record) we will jump in the pairwise with Michigan having no more games. SO we could hypothetically be in 13th place, if tonight's and thursday's games go as we want them too. Also a win over QU (independent of all other games because that is the only way to work the CHN app right now) would move us into 12, a fairly safe position. A loss on Friday does not move us from our position so a loss may not swing our pairwise down it just wont help us. I really wish there was a Consol game this year, it would have, no matter what, two chances to raise our pairwise.

So winning Friday should put us safely in, and losing will make the road difficult but I dont think it would officially knock us out (that could all change this afternoon). If as I said Northeastern loses tonight, North Dakota loses tonight, and Michigan loses Thursday we might be in good shape anyway, but we need to come out as if friday is a play in game. We beat QU and I think the open ice will be an advantage, so they need to go out there and take it.

You got that right Shabby. They should be kissing Finn on the lips for saving their bacon in the 2nd. They seemed to have collectively gone to sleep for about 6 minuets. Glad they played a great 3rd, but that won't cut it next weekend against Q. Should be a great game now that Gate has broken the spell. I think if they get past Q they win the AQ. They're a great road team so this should be fun. Placid is such a great place for hockey. Went up last year for the DIII FF and had a blast. Enjoy my friend.
