Re: Colgate 2012-13

Why are all these "out-of-towners" hijacking our thread?

I have to wonder how teams like Cornell, Brown, RPI, St. Lawrence, etc. turned their seasons around, and yet we seemed to have slumped in the middle of our season and really failed to put it all together? OK, we did have a good run in the playoffs last year. But, what are those teams doing that suddenly the've put together winning ways to get them up the standings and into the final eight?

In the case of Brown I know it's goaltending and tightening up the defense. With RPI there seems to have been a "wake up" moment when all of a sudden the team meshed and took off. With SLU the contributions of a healthy Flanagan along with Carey's offense have propelled them forward. With Cornelll you have to believe Iles got better in net during the season, but also the coaching IMHO must have had a lot to do with them suddenly catching fire.

What do posters think was missing from the 'Gate strategy this season that would have made us a contender? I know, I know - we were a young team and we expected ups and downs, and Spiro had problems...., but besides that, was there anything that could have been done differently to turn things around after the holiday break??

Re: Colgate 2012-13

the bottom line is that we don't have enough talent, pure and simple...yes, a good freshmen class, but the fact that they became our "go to" line - both at even strength and on the PP - says a lot about the relative lack of skill in our other classes...we are below average in net which certainly doesn't help...we scored 30 even strength goals in 22 games in ECAC play and by the end of the year only the freshmen were scoring...what does that tell you??? DV's teams DO NOT QUIT; recently they are simply not quite good enough re: broad-based talent...deal with it...the fact that some of our posters "laugh off" not recruiting in the USHL says more about their relative lack of hockey knowledge than anything else...as Magoo said, only DV can answer that question...if it's a question of $$$ than the Silver Puck Council should at least try and reach out to their donors...from experience, they really don't provide much of anything except perfunctory "thank you" notes and two get togethers where everyone has fun, drinks a lot, and, apparently, says everything's fine...all I do is give a decent amount of $$$ every year and not attend the "love fests"...I guess I'm the putz...

Re: Colgate 2012-13

The only thing I didn't like was Baun being moved away from the Spinks for some games. Other than that I think lack of depth having to overplay guys on the PP and PK did us in. Who knows ??

Re: Colgate 2012-13

golf tournament and SP weekend...otherwise Silver Puck provides virtually ZERO in the communication area...I don't even know if their website is current...

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Always sad when we should be playing at the best time of the year. Even my "backup" Utica College team lost in the frozen four in Placid last night.

Sorry to come out of my off-season hibernation but I couldn't resist. I agree with everything you've said about Silver Puck. A joke. I think the website was last updated 6 or 7 years ago. Frankly we had a strong freshman powerplay because they brought it with them from Cornwall. Don had nothing to do with the PP other than placing Spiro with the Cornwall kids. As far as burning out your best players on PK and PP that was not necessary. Speak to the players on the team and they will tell you the 4th liners they went up against in PP practice kept them from scoring and were among the best they faced. I heard this directly from two of the players. Don just wouldn't play them. In fact the best results came when Don played all 4 lines and kept rolling them. Most games 4th line got 1 - 2 shifts per period, that is not enough to get into the game and it isn't enough to keep the first and second line fresh. That is a terrible coaching mistake. Once again, as you always do, you throw the goalies under the bus. Frankly what happened to the Mihalik who carried us to ECACs? Mismanagement by the coaches (which also spoiled a good incoming freshman) is what happened. I am sure both Finney and Mihalik will be thrown under the bus for our new savior the incoming freshman goalie. How long will it take before the coaching staff turns 3 D-1 capable goalies into the shell shot goalie from slapshot. Frankly we really don't have a goalie coach if you compare Lefevre to a really good college level coach. So much of a goalie is mental toughness and the way this crew manages goalies you can count on the mental toughness to diminish as the season progresses. It's all head games with these guys. So, when you keep pointing to depth, I'd say that this was probably one of the more talented squads in years. Granted no one superstar, but certainly a strong well bonded and balanced team that played as a unit without the disruption of some past egos. Unfortunately Don only knows how to coach a team with 1 all star line. Go watch the special ESPN did on Jack Parker and Jerry York. Two very different coaches but they share some important common traits. They hold everyone, even their stars, accountable and will bench them or put them in the stands if they screw up. They also stopped by to visit their players to talk about school, family, dreams, etc. This staff probably doesn't even know where the players live. The coaches have never had and never will care about a connection with the players; only the few superstars who can get away with anything. Don't believe me? Check out the history of Smith's off ice antics that never got him in trouble- including his rant about the campus police cracking down on partying that was in the school paper. So we have a talented team and an untalented coaching staff. Too bad as this could have been a special year.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Which is the real Cornell? The one that lost 10-0 to QU on Saturday or the one that went to double OT and lost to QU 3-2 last night? Kind of makes you wonder how teams can come back after such a devastating loss. On any night in the ECAC any team can beat any other team,....or look really lousy :)

Bump.

A re-building year isn't always a bad thing. I seem to remember a good number of players leaving (given we played in your barn on senior night), but with some fresh talent in the underclass, I would not be shocked to see you guys give teams a run for their money next year, especially given a number of the close games you had this past year. To be fair, this is one of the reasons why I picked Quinnipiac so high, is because they returned a lot (and I even mentioned that in my pick way back in October). Your team will be returning some solid talent, and depending upon their commitment to becoming better over the summer so they don't suffer that "sophomore slump", I wouldn't be shocked to see something solid. I may wait another year before putting you back in first round bye status, but 5th or 6th will not be unreasonable for your team.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Shabby...the last team from the ECAC to reach the national finals was...Colgate in 1990...ANY ECAC team getting to the finals would be great...I would guess Q-Pac obviously, but with Malcolm back in the nets for Yale, the Bulldogs could surprise...

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Update on incoming frosh Andrew Black: in addition to helping lead his EJHL New Jersey Hitmen to a playoff title (finishing 2nd in the league in playoff scoring with 6-6-12), Andrew was named EJHL regular season MVP. Looks like a player.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Our goalie Finn (next year) numbers are stupid good. For three years SAA is at least .930 with Kingston. This year 25-10 SAA of .941 and 8-2 in the playoffs so far. His coach says the only reason they are in a lot of games is because of him. Check out his stats !!!:) SAA of .936 for the season !!!!

Re: Colgate 2012-13

The big question we are going to have next year is Defense and Goalie. We proved that we have scorers on this team and will for the foreseeable future. But having to win games 9-8 just isnt feasible night in/ night out. We will go as far as next year's goalie takes us (whether it be Mihalik, Finney, or Finn).

Re: Colgate 2012-13

we have the scorers??? 30 even strength goals in 22 ECAC games would suggest not...Incoming frosh Black will help here, but we need more scoring at even strength to complement a good PP...still waiting for us to add to the 7 coming next year...I know other schools are addressing roster sizes that are simply too small; are we???
