Re: Colgate 2011-12

Should still be tickets available to the Cornell game - if they sell out in advance, I most definitely think that the school would announce it. That said, I wouldn't wait until the last minute to try and get tickets.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Disappointing weekend trip, though the long travel probably hurt. Not the end of the world, but certainly not helpful to our NCAA chances, though much of that also stems from the ECAC's overall lack of OOC success

No matter, it's all conference play from here on in. Can we expect a sweep at P-ton/Q-pac? Should we? Shorter travel in more familiar terrain might help the team get back on track, but nothing comes easy (or as predicted) in the conference

Re: Colgate 2011-12

I have to disagree in regards to travel being a cause of the poor play this past weekend.

The trip to Omaha at the start of the season was just as long (much more actual plane time) and that resulted in a tournament championship with wins over Robert Morris and Nebraska Omaha. Long bus trips at the start of November to Brown/Yale and Dartmouth/Harvard produced league weekend splits. And a single-game trip to Vermont around Thanksgiving included a five-hour bus ride and a 4-1 victory.

Despite the early morning wake-up on Thursday, the team spent most of the day in Big Rapids. The hotel was within walking distance of the rink so there was no arduous bus journey from the hotel to campus. And Friday was like any normal game day for a road game being around the hotel.

All things considered, it was just a bad weekend. Ewigleben, a funky little barn, is a tough place to play and Colgate for the most part just simply didn't answer the bell - Ferris was the hungrier team both nights. For whatever reason, the weekend was a bit of a regression back to last year in terms of on-ice play and a lot of what the team has been doing this year to win games was not done at Ferris. It is what it is. For the time being it's nothing to worry about, chalk it up to having a bad day(s) and we'll see how the response is this weekend back on the road at Princeton and Quinnipiac. TD Bank Sports Center at Quinnipiac has been a rough place to play for Colgate over the last few years and Princeton will be tough at home - certainly a team much better than its record indicates.

If the boys win a couple of games, the pairwise will climb. The teams above them all go in to tough conference match ups for the rest of the season as well. If Gate takes care of business they will earn an auto bid. Guessing 2, out side reach at 3, ECAC teams will get into the NCAA's when all is said and done.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Let's lay off Tchr Bill...coming into this season most of us knew that scoring depth was going to be an issue...let's be honest...it still is...the two losses are tough and our overall 6-4-2 record against non-ECAC opponents isn't especially impressive (although wins over UN-O and Miami do matter)...this is a good hockey team with solid goaltending, good depth on defense and two-NHL calibre forwards...we can't expect Wagner and especially Smith to continue to score at their current pace (BTW, would love to see Smith win the Hobey) and desperately need a second line to step up...we've got 5 games left with Union, Cornell and Yale...3 wins should be a reasonable goal if this team is going to go beyond "good"...no worse than a split this weekend is a must...GO 'GATE...

Re: Colgate 2011-12

David McIntyre had an assist last night in his third NHL game for Minnesota. Congrats

GreenCoat, don't you know TchrBill is our annual punching bag :) You make good points; we *DO* need to have others step up in the scoring dep't. Like to see Bartliff elevate his game another notch to be a true threat like Wagner-Smith. Hopefully Joey Wilson might score a few now that he's halfway through his frosh year. He's doing fine on the first line so far.

Shabby - Got it. Section 7, up high. Thanks for the tip. Now let's rewind and go out and beat Q-pac and P'ton.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

PWR forecast for the Raiders, January 12, 2011:

After two disappointing losses to Ferris State, we are now 21st in the PWR, which is on the outside looking in. But there are still many, many games to go. If the right things happen this weekend, we can jump up several spots and bolster our positioning.

-First, we want to sweep our two games this weekend. The game against Quinnipiac is more important since it would be a TUC win. So if we can't sweep, at least win on Saturday.
-We want Union to defeat Harvard at Fenway Park. This will likely drop Harvard's RPI under .500, and remove one of our TUC losses.
-We also want Dartmouth to defeat UNH. If they become a TUC, then we get another TUC win.
-We want Merrimack to sweep Maine; this improves our RPI and will drop the Black Bears who are above us in the rankings right now.
-Also, we want Northeastern to lose to both BC and BU, as this will drop them in the rankings.
-Root root root for Miami, Ferris, and UNO. They are playing Lake Superior, Alaska, and Minn-Duluth respectively. If they triumph it improves our RPI and helps our PWR.

Of course, we need to take care of our own business this weekend. Two wins are certainly do-able. A split will be tolerable since it will keep us on pace for a top-4 ECAC finish, but again, we at least want a win over the Bobcats.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

We need to take care of business tonight, P-Ton goalies are weak. Q-Pac scares me, 8-1-2 at home.
My 4000th post.

That is certainly fair, and the mention of travel was probably more related to my impression of where they were versus the actual logistics of being there. Still, long way to go against a good team in a tough barn, and they didn't play well. Hopefully that's out of their system for the timebeing, and they can get back to winning games

Happy Colgate Day everyone :)

P'ton scares me in their barn, but it's doable. Q-pac is another story. We need to win that game and it will be tough down there. We have a target on our backs now that we've been ranked for weeks. Both these teams will come out with an agenda. We gotta play smart hockey, stay out of the box, and play a full 60 minutes. No opponent scoring in the first and last three minutes of each period!! No major penalties!

Congrats, Shabby, on reaching another milestone!

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Rainman, love the RPI analysis and dissection and the "who to root for" info. Any chance you can post a follow up after the games tonight in preparation for Saturday night?

Maybe. I'm going to the Union-Harvard game at Fenway tonight and probably won't be back until late. But I'll do my best to post a follow up and "who to root for" on Saturday. But first and foremost, root root root for the Raiders!

Happy Colgate Day everyone!

Re: Colgate 2011-12

The thought occurred to me BEFORE the embarrassing performance of tonight: why did we stop the successful rotating of goaltenders (I guess starting last week at Ferris)...save percentages can be deceiving but it would seem the Evin's numbers merit a continuation of having two #1 goalies...as for tonight - apart for a really pathetic effort - we'd better get SOME offensive contribution from any of lines 2, 3, or even 4 or a top four finish is problematic. And let's stop the TUC analysis folks...give me a couple of wins first.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

OUCH. Wasn't expecting such a dreadful result for us tonight. Now having lost 3 in a row, I'm starting to get a bit concerned we may be on a slide similar to what happened last year :(

On the other hand, it's good to see Austin Smith score twice. But since the calendar turned to 2012, we're 0-3 and on a 3-game losing streak. I'll be at tomorrow's game in person and see what's going on with my own eyes. Will we right the ship or will I see what we all saw for a good part of last season?

Was at the Union-Harvard game at Fenway tonight. Lots of empty seats. Both the Dutchmen and Crimson are good teams; we'll have to bring our A-game against both of them later on this season (as well as all of our remaining games).
