Re: Colgate 2010-11

I agree with most of what you're saying 93. HE I was talking about our home schedule in hockey. We lost our fifth home game with Dartmouth...Syracuse preempted Dart.

Noone wants to play in our highschool rink.

Not sure how important these two games are this weekend as Lake State will probably not be a TUC ! BC will be huge though.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I doubt LSSU is headed to TUC land but would be pleasantly surprised if, after dropping two close ones early in the season to a certain team from centeral New York, they ripped off one heck of a season. I was thinking more from the standpoint of hopefully 'Gate will be a TUC - that brings up two issues 1) record against common opponent is a criteria - two wins over LSSU ensures we don't lose that comp. to any CCHA TUC and 2) the team has been painfully close to TUC status over the last couple of years only to fall short. We weren't going to the show but could have helped some of our compatriots in the ECAC. Last year we had two shoulda/coulda/woulda ties and a an s/c/w OT loss - from an RPI standpoint that has got to hurt particularly when they came against RoMO, Niagara and Canisius - just playing those teams hurts the RPI - not winning is a killer.

Agree that Starr is a primary problem in the scheduling - hopefully a fix isn't a decade away!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Best of luck to the team this weekend! I think a lengthy trip, coupled with two games taking place very close to the Canadian border, could really help this team towards having a great season. One win will give us confidence; two would be even better.

As far as our OOC schedule goes, I agree that it is indeed rather "weak", and therefore we can't really afford to lose most of these games. As far as Pairwise Rankings goes, I doubt that LSSU will be a TUC. But like Gate93 said, sweeping this weekend will help us in the "record vs. common opponents" category, especially against any CCHA team (Michigan, Michigan St. come to mind) that ends up being a TUC.

Also of note: Army also plays Union and Harvard this year, and Sacred Heart also plays Yale and Union. Niagara also plays RPI. If we can post a perfect record against these three AHA opponents, it will also go a long way assuming Yale and Union (and possibly RPI) become TUC's.

Here's to a great weekend!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I know this is only the 2nd game of the season but tonight will tell a lot about what kind of team we have here this year. A very long road trip to play in a full building in a hostile environment for your 2nd game of the year great early test. There is a lot of maturity on the team and they'll need to be mature tonight. No stupid penalties and a solid effort on D and in net should be the recipe for a W in Michigan.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Our OOC schedule this year is pretty weak. LSSU was picked 12th in the CCHA. BC is obviously top notch but the entire rest of the schedule is AHA.

Whoa! With only 11 teams in the CCHA this year, Lake State must be pretty bad to be picked 12th. :)

CCHA coaches and media picked us 9 of 11 I think. USCHO know nothing Paula Weston picked us 11th, and INCH had us 6th. Lakers are often great one night and awful the next. This has split written all over it to me. Lake State's offense has been pretty good, but defensive coverage has been really bad, and our senior goalie is giving up HUGE rebounds. Good luck!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Your team came out playing hard and skated well all night. It was a real good game to watch, good luck after saturday night.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Looks like the PP needs a redesign. It sounded like we couldn't generate any kind of offense when we were a man up. Time to look at other options. Sounds like Evin played great again which is encouraging. 2 goals against Army (1EN), 3 goals against Brock, 1 goal against LSSU. Scoring 2 goals a game isn't going to get it done.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

What a frustrating and disappointing weekend. We played 2 close games and got zero wins to show for it. Friday night good defense but no offense. Tonight we finally find ways to light the lamp (including 2 PPG's), but have mental lapses at the end of both the 2nd and 3rd periods and it torches us.

Fortunately we still have 31 regular season games to go. IF we can take care of business against Sacred Heart we should be fine.

And let's not even talk about the football game. Watching that then listening to tonight's hockey game really made me want to punch a hole in the wall.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

OK, ready for the bright side?
LSSU is not that bad a team. They took a tough road trip to Notre Dame last weekend for 2 games and lost 4-2 on both nights. Guess what, Boston College went to ND tonight for 1 game and lost 2-1 so I guess LSSU is ok. After a hellish 14 hour bus trip the boys kept it close both nights and could have won either game against a team desperately needing wins. The offense woke up a bit tonight and that's a great sign. The young guys gained some valuable experience this weekend playing way up north and I thought they did ok from the sounds of it on the radio. Day is playing great and the move to put Smith back with him was great. They are clicking again. Now we need to find a line that can produce some secondary scoring. Bartliff, Prockow, Firman or Bourdon, a couple of these guys need to get on the board. One more tune up next week before league play starts at Clarkson and St Lawrence.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Yikes...Just saw the score. Smith assisted on all four goals and Brisebois three assists. We couldn't recover from a horrible first half in football either..arghhhhhhhhhh

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I like the fight to come back and seeing the offense wake up. Let's see if they can keep it going, and if they can spread the scoring a bit

I don't like the PP going 0-3 in the 1st and 2-9 on the weekend, and I especially don't like giving up late goals in both the 2nd and 3rd periods

Getting swept on the road against a second division CCHA foe is certainly an...inauspicious start to the season. Gotta rebound against Sacred Heart before heading to the North Country

Keep the bright commentary coming, Gaterrocker. Would like to see us begin a season with a few wins under our belt instead of finding ourselves in an early hole. Our OOC performance is predictably unimpressive. Too early to tell about Lake State but they're picked near the bottom for a reason.

Thoughts on the game at the Prudential Center, anyone?

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I look at our early schedule and have to wonder what was coach V thinking? The neutral site game against army was fine, but then a throw away game against a Canadian team and a haul of a bus trip to any CCHA school, especially one looking for their 1st win, is a recipe for a slow start. But again, I put on my rose colored glasses. We are 3 games into the season and I do see some good signs. The 2nd night against LSSU was a fight and the boys did not roll over and die after a tough Friday night game they could have won. One more game and then the ECAC schedule starts. If we can pull out a win at home against a Sacred Heart team that is having a tough time getting it going, we'll head early to the North Country with a 2 and 2 record. Both games up North are winnable, and I must say, the trip to LSSU will make the North trip this year seem like a walk in the park, maybe that's what coach V was thinking.

So lets hope that LSSU is better than people expect (I think they are based on their 2 games and ND last weekend). We'll find that out this weekend when they head to #1 MIAMI for 2 games. Let's also hope that this weekend reignited the offense and the PP and the 1st line stays hot. It sounds like it will be a pretty good crowd on Saturday with parents weekend at Cogate and the football team on the road. So other than Bill Clinton on Friday night, Starr looks like the place to be on Saturday afternoon.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

While I do agree with most of what you say, rooter, the North Country trip is always a tough trip no matter what.

Regardless of how Clarkson or SLU, especially SLU, are at the moment they are always tough to beat at their own barn and is probably the hardest road sweep in the league. I think we've only done it twice in the last 20 years. That 89-90 season and sometime else down the road. I believe that we have the talent to win both of those games when they come but first, we must focus on SHU, our home opener and a must win. Also, don't worry if LSSU gets rocked @ Miami. Miami, as you said, will probably be No. 1 and is coming off a 9-1 home victory over 2010 NCAA Tourney participant Northern Michigan. Cady arena is not a warm place to play at if you're the visitors.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Just to clear up a couple things. The Lake State games were part of a home-and-home contract that began during the 2008-2009 season when Lake State came into Starr Rink. Colgate was going to have to travel up to the Soo at some point and early-to-mid October is probably the best time weather-wise. Plus, looking at the schedule, the second half of the year beginning with the first weekend of January is all conference games. So, there really wasn't another good time to go.

I wouldn't be surprised if we put together another home-and-home with Lake State in the future. It's out-of-conference games against someone you don't traditionally see every year and it's two guaranteed home dates for each school. I'd imagine Lake State's in the same boat as Colgate in terms of having a problem finding non-conference teams to come up to play in the Soo.

In regards to the bus, there's not really an easy way to get up to Sault Ste. Marie with a 31-person traveling party and all of that hockey gear. The team flew the last time it went up and I guess it was a nightmare. At least if you're on the bus then you have everything with you and can control the situation. The trip up was also spread out over two days with no more than 7hrs on the bus.

The Brock game was on the schedule as a way to at least play a game and not have the weekend off. Coach Vaughan talked about it on the first Coaches Show that the players wanted the schedule the way it was with little to no time off so that they could get into a rhythm I guess you'd say. This is as opposed to playing one weekend then taking time off, playing a single game, taking more time off, etc etc.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Nice job on the recap GR. A couple of questions for you about the games.

What has been the deal with the line of Prockow-Mayer-Firman? Line has very good size, but listening to Saturday nights game I didn't hear their name much. Shouldn't this line be creating havoc on the other teams D down low?

How did Wade look in his 1st games back? I'm sure he was a little rusty, good to have him back. I would have never guessed this team would have given up 5 goals in a game all year, never mind the 3rd game of the year. Weren't a couple of the goals against on the PK.

What did you see with the line of Bartliff-Bourdon-Wagner on Saturday? Are they generating scoring chances and not capitalizing or are they just bottled up in the D end and neutral zone?

Great to see Day-Brisebois-Smith back together again. My only concern is that the next line mentioned above really doesn't have an experienced go to guy on it. I'd like to try a line of Day-Smith-Wagner and then Brisebois-Bartliff-Bourdon. Not sure this works out shot wise but, playing the off wing should be ok for Smith or Brisebois especially coming down on the rush with the stick on the inside.

I think the 4th line should go back to Long-Rivellini-McCann, they produced in the Army game and the Brock scrimmage. How did Hamburg look on Saturday?

And finally I think the Offensive D like Larkin, Mac and Wade need jump in the play a bit more if we can't get the other lines going on Saturday night. We need to come out fast with a full court press on Saturday against SH. GR, how does the ticket situation look for Saturday afternoon being parents weekend? Looking at the sports schedule, it doesn't look like there is a whole lot going on this weekend other than the game.

I still feel like we're at least a week behind everyone else. Here it is Nov almost and I haven't even seen them play yet..hmmm...hard to comment. What a brutal schedule.

Well, Sacred Heart comes roaring in this weekend...looking forward finally to some hockey !

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Shabby I am right with you. I can't believe that I miss STARR!

I want to see the team come out with a BANG.

Hopefully they aren't a week behind all year!

The Army/Brock/Game1 LSSU lineup had a third line of all left shots and a fourth line of all right shots. May make sense to adjust line 3 and 4 for a little balance. So far line 4 has out produced and has a better +- than 3 in that configuration.
