Re: Colgate 2010-11
I was at the game
The atmosphere was ... well, a bit hard to describe. A nice, "new" rink but seating only on one side of the ice??? Very disappointing. I spent the first two periods in the "end zone" seating then the 3rd period on the "side" seating near one of the blue lines. And yes, a lot of people showed up. Attendance was announced at around 1600 for the game. A lot of people wearing maroon, but a lot of people rooting for Army, espeically when they scored their only goal.
My thoughts and observations on the game:
Well, apparently holding a Division 1 college hockey game on the Cape is a way to draw a large crowd. Not only were there Colgate and Army fans, but a handful of young high-school aged boys just interested in watching a hockey game, as well as local people that live on the Cape, plus college hockey enthusiasts from MA that wanted to witness the 1st ever college hockey game played in Hyannis.
16 seconds into the 1st period, it looked like Jeremy Price was hurt. I was holding my breath, especially since it looked like he was limping off the ice and into the locker room. But lo and behold, about 10 min. later he was skating back onto the bench. I breathed a sigh of relief. Sadly, the 1st period as a whole was not exciting. A lot of whistles and few penalties.
The 2nd period, well ... I had a clear view of Day's goal, and the entire Colgate crowd was cheering loudly. It's always nice to take a 1-0 lead. Also nice to see that Brian Day is still finding ways to light the lamp. But at the same time, we had so many power-play opportunities and couldn't convert them? Yeesh. Yeah, it's the 1st game of the regular season and we may need to get some kinks out, but it would have been nice to score on the man advantage.
Onto the 3rd period ... I had a crazy feeling that something bad was going to happen. And it did ... sort of. Three power play opportunities in a row and we couldn't score. Then we did score, and the guy who did score the goal gets sent to the penalty box ... and Army scores. At that point, there was about 10 min. left and I was holding my breath. Under 2 min. to play and Army pulls their goalie. I had to move up to the standing room section just so I could stand and have a clear view of the action. Fortunately, Austin Smith to the rescue with an empty-net goal to seal the victory for the Raiders
As a whole, I think this team has a lot of potential. Offensively, we are still trying to find an identity, especially on the power play. Defensively, we were great. I didn't have total confidence in Alex Evin, but he didn't disappoint me. Surprisingly, Wade Poplawski did not play tonight. Hopefully he was a healthy scratch and not injured.
Congratulations are in order for Mike McCann (1st career goal), Chris Wagner (1st career point), and Billy Rivellini (1st career point -- I believe this is the first time I've ever seen him play). This looks like it could be a great season!
