Re: Colgate 2009-2010

1/2 - 7:05 pm EST, 6:05 pm CST, Colgate vs. Notre Dame
1/3 - 4:05 pm EST, 3:05 pm CST, Colgate vs. North Dakota or Niagara

The Sunday game time is set in stone because Notre Dame is playing the late game both nights.

So we play in the championship game at 3:05 CST? The arena may not be very filled by then...;) You would think they would make the championship game the late game on Sunday for a larger crowd.

Merry Christmas to all!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

The same thing happened in the 2007 Badger Showdown, when Colgate won the shootout vs. Wisconsin to advance to the championship game.

Has McIntyre really been injured since the RIT game??? If so, that's been basically the whole season and he's been sucking it up! I hope it's nothing serious, and that ALL of our players will be back at 100% for both the Shillelagh Tournament and the North Country trip Jan. 15-16, as we'll still be on "extra rest" until after that weekend.

Happy Holidays to everyone who posts here! Also, be on the lookout sometime tomorrow for the "ECAC Pick 'em, Week 6" thread.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Thanks for the reminder Rainman.

If we've done this *well* with Mac going at half speed (quarter speed?) think what we could have done - or will do - with him at 100% (80%?).

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Long time no posting. Gonna have to change that :)

I listened to the 3rd period of the Canisius game. Blowing a 2 goal lead late is never a good thing, but that's part of the deal with a weak defense and the 3rd goalie. Hopefully Vaughan was just using it as a "stretch-the-legs-out" game

As for our trip to Chicago, I'm looking forward to playing a team like Notre Dame, and hopefully North Dakota in Round 2. No disrespect to Niagara, but twice is enough, at least when one of the top programs in the country is available instead

It's been a decent 1st half, though I'm a bit wary with the team having a weaker record against strong competition. Still, I think they're set up well for a strong second half as long as they take care of home ice. Hosting a first round series was my goal for this season, but a bye is still very much in the realm of possibility

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Great article on 2010 incoming goaltender Max Fenkell from Phillips Exeter Academy.

http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20091208-SPORTS-912080369

EXETER — Thanksgiving break arrived at Phillips Exeter Academy, and hockey players — as well as students — scattered across the region. Many went home to see families. Others spent the week with friends or relatives.

Goalie Max Fenkell flew 3,000 miles to British Columbia. No big deal — except that he's from Philadelphia. While his teammates were eating turkey and trying to stay in shape with daily skates, Fenkell spent six intense days with a goaltending coach in the town of Parksville on Vancouver Island — a working holiday, albeit a waterfront one. Fenkell, a 5-foot-9 senior, was a big reason the Big Red advanced all the way to the New England Division I prep championship game last year, his first with the program. He set program records for minutes played (1,666) and save percentage (.940), and finished with a record of 26-3-1.

Also, a quick check of the Eastern Jr. League shows Chris Wagner (2010) leading the circuit in scoring with 59 points on 23-36 in 29 games. Wagner has a 13-point edge on the player in second place. Joey Wilson (2011) is also among the league's top 20 with 33 points (16-17) in 25 games. Wagner's South Shore team has the best record in the league at 21-3-4-1

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

It does not appear that there will be any live video for the tournament. Notre Dame does have an All-Access Video Player but an audio feed is currently the only feed listed for the Colgate-UND tilt. North Dakota and Niagara also have live audio links listed for what I suspect is their local radio coverage.

WKXZ will be covering both games with the pre-game slated to start around 6:45 EST on Saturday and 3:45 EST on Sunday. I'll be flying out to Chicago a little later this week. There are also men's hoops broadcasts on Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and the following Saturday as the the non-conference schedule concludes and Patriot League play starts against Army and there will also be a women's non-conference game against Howard on Tuesday.

Usually if there is a hockey game, we'll have it on WKXZ. In three years, the only games we haven't covered have been exhibition games against CIS schools (Waterloo, Ottawa). And of course there is the internet feed at TEAMLINE.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I may have posted a hockey briefing on our team under the Shillelagh Heading, however, those posters are running there own Reality Forum.

So, if we are healthy, and other than the average Save % we have in the
1st Half, I feel that we may have a better 2nd half.

The Defense is maturing quickly, and offensively, we are no longer a one line threat. Many players are stepping to the forefront, which is going to take a lot of pressure off our top scorers.

Wish everyone a happy New Year, and good luck to Gate for the remainder of the season.

2010 could be a great year to remember.

p.s. The UND posters collaberated to turn me into the red category. After reading their posts, I'm thinking they didn't like me asking, "What Qualifications you needed to get into that School"

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

LOL....I have been following that thread and know better than to get involved with "Dirty".

I do agree that I have a fairly positive outlook for the second half. Yes, our first line has over sixty points but...Larkin, Bourdon and Brisebois have accounted for over thirty points with Bris at eight goals and five assists.

Long is not Silverthorne or Dekanich (can you imagine if we had one of them) but he's 5-2-2 and has played fairly solid, just not spectacular. Maybe he can just get a little hot streak going, just make the saves you're supposed to make, that's all.

Looking forward at the schedule, if we can split SLU and Clarkson, we then play seven of nine at home. We would be 6-4-1 at the half way point in the ECAC.

This weekend it would be just super to beat Notre Dame, we usually don't fare well in Holiday tourny's, we can't give up 3-4 goals in the first period like we did against UVM last winter. Palmieri's playing with the Junior team and ND has some key injuries the same as North Dakota. Hey...Ya never know !!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

A Happy New Year to everyone who posts here. Here's to 2010 bringing us a lot of W's for our Raiders, hopefully starting tomorrow.

Did anyone see this afternoon's Winter Classic? With the Bruins having "hosted" it, Mike Milbury (former 'Gate alum and former Boston Bruin) was interviewed before the game to share his experience as a hockey player who once played outdoors (though he didn't mention his 'Gate years, just his youth and time as a Bruin).

Also of note, Milbury is from Walpole, Massachusetts. One of our incoming 2010 recruits (Chris Wagner) is also from Walpole. Thought I'd share that with you guys.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Yup, watched the Winter Classic. It was nice to see the Bruins pull it out, being the home team, however I don't root for either team.

I didn't even recognize Bobby Clarke; he's changed a lot in his old age...:) Enjoyed the interview with Bobby Orr. He's a class act.

Just a few hours till we face off against ND..GO 'GATE!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Only heard part of the first period last nite. Any reports from posters on the game? How was Long in goal? How'd we look generally?

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Judging from the results of both games I'd say we pretty well stunk up the ice for 120 minutes. Goaltending remains subpar at best; the penalty kill is simply atrocious. We've now played 27 in-season tournaments under Coach V and won exactly TWO. I was actually somewhat optimistic after a few games, but improvement seems to be lacking and frankly I'd be surprised if we finished in the top half of the league. Coach Vaughan's record over the years - at least on the surface - is average. Beneath the surface it's frankly below average with ZERO appearances in the ECAC finals (not wins, appearances) and two NCAA invites. Our record against quality competition outside of the ECAC is awful. For a host of reasons (many of which the current coach has no control over) we continue to slide while programs that we previously dominated - e.g., Union and RPI - are or will soon surpass us in overall competitiveness. I'd still like to know why we make virtually no effort to recruit in the USHL. Take a look at virtually every other roster in the ECAC. Since Ontario is more and more difficult to recruit you'd think we stretch the map a little. Everyone else is...

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Listened to portions of the 1st and 2nd periods last night; didn't listen today. Saw the scores though and all I can say is this:

We have now lost 3 in a row, 5 of our last 6, and 6 of our last 8. AND we're now below .500 too. I'm trying to be optimistic in this post, but the fact that our schedule has been giving us "extra" rest here and there since the Cornell game back on Nov. 24 appears to be hurting us. If this trend continues, we'll lose to SLU on Jan. 15th then who knows what'll happen against Clarkson on Jan. 16th. Right now I'm hoping for at least a split on the North Country trip...

I just hope that come Feb. we won't be struggling to get home ice in the playoffs.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

The final score and some of the numbers are misleading. Colgate played well on Saturday night against Notre Dame but ND's netminder Mike Johhnson made a few big saves and the Raiders couldn't solve Notre Dame's trap. McIntyre, Day and Smith drew constant double and triple teams. The Irish are better than their record indicates and have had a lot of injuries this season. They weren't overly dominate but they played well enough to win and had a good game plan. Colgate spotting ND a four-goal to start the game didn't help either.

Today was the case of a few different things coming together that spelled doom for the team. Niagara goaltender Chris Noonan played a whale of a hockey game (36 saves on 37 shots) and made big save after big save to keep Colgate off of the scoreboard for the most part. The only goal was on a Day slap shot rocket from the left wing boards on a rush. Niagara capitalized on several bad mistakes, bad bounces and some untimely penalties. Really, NU cashed in on its' chances and Colgate didn't. The Raiders had a chance to get back into the game in the third but a horrific offsides call led to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for arguing. A second Gate goal late in the game was waved off on a supposed kicking violation on Day for kicking the puck into the net on a clear bang-bang one-timer.

Bottom line, there's still lots of hockey left to be played. The team still is in the top half of the league standings and has games left with everyone else in the league including two each against SLU and Clarkson. It's not time at all to hit the panic button yet. I'm sure we'll see a much different effort against the Larries in a few weeks.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I hate being the pessimist, but being outscored 10-3 over the two games is a very poor performance

I was particularly struck by Evin's comment in the intermission interview about the team getting "a wake-up call." We're now 2-6-1 in our last 9 games, which had better serve as a wake-up. I'm not sure what they needed to wake up from, but let's hope the alarm clock has gone off

That all said, I don't think they're as bad as they showed over the weekend. North Country is a tough road trip, but both teams are absolutely beatable (Here's an odd stat: Clarkson hasn't beaten Colgate at Cheel in the regular season since 02-03  Their only win in that span against us there was the '08 playoffs. Granted, that includes 4 ties in 6 meetings, but still...). I'm hardly going to say at this point that home-ice will suddenly become a struggle, 7 of our last 11 are in Starr Rink, and in spite of the crowd's general malaise, we usually have a strong record there

If the defense can commit itself to minimizing their mistakes, and the offense can get ramped up again, the wins will definitely start to come. Really, if they can tighten up defensively first, the wins will come faster. Unfortunately, we have only 1 upper-classman on the blueline (Poplawski), so those guys are going to have to grow up fast over the next 2 months. Lots of hockey left to be played, no reason to lose the faith right now

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

If the stats are correct, and one would assume they are, Niagara had 41 SOG against us in the consolation game. If, indeed, we were on the wrong end of a couple of bad calls, then fine, suck it up and play hard. The "bad bounce" and "bad call" syndromes are becoming too often a loser's lament. The fact is that there has been no meaningful improvement on those things that faced us early in the season. The freshmen are now through one-half of a long season. The goaltending is, at best, inconsistent and we simply do not beat top tier teams. I'm as passionate a fan as anybody, but one must be (at least occasionally) objective in assessing this team's performance. Frankly, it's disappointing and the coaching staff has to assume some responsibility.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I agree with Rainman. The choppy schedule around the holidays, too much rest, as well as the usual holiday tournament in which we normally have poor results, upset the routine of ECAC play. I don't see any reason that once we get back to league play every weekend we can't right the ship.

The Larries and Golden Nights are beatable in their barns. Let's hope we can turn this around in a hurry.

BTW, do we have anyone on the DL? Can't seem to find that info on-line.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I'm with Green Coat (as usual) - stop with the excuses. Colgate isn't the only team in D1 hockey with a crazy schedule around the holidays. And an offsides call went against us? Oh how terrible!! The team didn't get it done in a holiday tournament - so what else is new?

Now it's Evin's turn in goal. Let's see how he does.

Evin is out with a lower body injury and is hopeful to be back for the North Country weekend.
