Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

I thought OSU had some very good coaching candidates if all true. Harrington, Koch, Diggit (has a great coaching record) Clarkson coach.

Let's not forget RMU who? Not many girls even know they're D1. It would will be tough for anyone to do well coaching there. Had some big wins over teams like UMD, Wisconsin. I've heard great things about him from girls who have been coached by him. I think we can give him a chance. Let see what he can do with a very good team.

Best of luck!

I'm with you, WCHFan, if tOSU and AD Gene Smith, who is actually a big hockey fan, have decided that this is the guy to get our program to the next level, let's support this decision and give the guy a chance. My personal opinion on Coach Barto is that she must have been doing something right to produce all the Olympians and national team players and we just need a coach who can continue to recruit great players and develop them. With the players we have coming back, I am genuinely excited about next season, provided our girls can adapt to the new coach, new system, which I believe they can. I'll be looking for that announcement on ohiostatebuckeyes.com.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

On the surface, I'm a bit under-whelmed, but coaching wise, the Buckeyes had no where but up to go. We'll support the new coach, hope that he can both coach and recruit. Only time will tell.

By the way, my sources indicate that Digit was never a serious candidate, her past got her an interview. Also, one of the early finalists was offered, but turned the job down. I have been reluctant to discuss the coach search because I believe some things should remain somewhat private. As an example, it's my understanding the RMU coach was going to inform his team tonight, with the official announcement tomorrow. The earlier post here may have screwed that up a bit .

High Slot, haven't seen anything official announced on ohiostatebuckeyes.com. Have you or GloveSave85 heard anything new?

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

Guess I can understand that sentiment after reading of the other candiates rumored to be interested...or interviewing for the job. Maybe there weren't as many other, seemingly preferable alternatives if those rumors of the job being offered and subsequently turned down by a different prospective coach as one poster suggested. I don't have anything negative to say about this replacement for Barto specifically. I'd agree...gotta give him a fair chance to show what he can do. Barto seemed like a pretty darn good recruiter who has had quite a bit of top talent play in Columbus...but never seemed able to have that talent gel to a level one would expect. Now, can this guy recruit as well or better and get the team to perform more akin to the top teams. His big challenge...immediate and at hand, battle the Badgers, Bulldogs, Gophers and Sioux for top spots in the WCHA relatively soon. The inconsistency that has become a rather prominent trait Of the Buckeyes shouldn't be tolerated under the new regime IMO...not for long anyway.

Wonder if he'll bring and new staffers in? Who?

Hmmm. :( The ink is not even dry yet.
For heaven's sake, give the person a chance before commenting.

No, as RM gave former assistant coach, Scott Spencer, a co-Head Coach title about half way through the season last season. So I assume Spencer would become the Head Coach.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

Never mind a coaching change...getting word off the wire this morning that Wayne State has cut it's women's hockey program. Can anybody confirm?

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

I heard the same thing. Heard from Delayne Brian on her facebook that they just told them that there won't be a team any more. I guess the CHA is back to 4 teams

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

If they are done this will leave Michigan without a D1 womens' team, even though there are seven Michigan schools that play D1 mens' hockey.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

Is there a precedent for this type of thing? Are Scholly's honored? Do some transfer? BTD shows 4 incoming frosh...what do they do?

In the past scholarships have been honored for players that want to stay and those who want to go elsewhere are allowed to do so without having to sit out if applicable in their sport/league.

Unfortunate for the girls and the coaches for sure.. Will be interested to see what BTD, USCHO and others dig up on this news..

Kinda late for the frosh and others to go somewhere at the national collegiate level. I would expect most to land in D3 or the CIS for this season..

IIRC, Findlay was the most recent D1 womens hockey program to get axed. Thats about 7 or 8 years ago now. Two local players from our neck of the woods were there, heading into year two or three. School honoured their scholarships. One of the girls took that option, finished her degree at Findlay and never played hockey anywhere else. The other player transfered and ended up an All American at another D1 school and played in the frozen four.

Agree toughest situation is for the incoming Frosh.

Stacy McConnell ended up at RIT from Findlay when all that happend.
Too bad about Wayne State and losing another hockey program but they should have seen this coming when their men's team dropped a couple years ago.
