Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

Well, SCSU did lose an assistant coach - Jennifer Kranz is moving down the road to St Ben's as head coach (link). So not sure if the posting for her position was already up, or if indeed that was the formal posting for the interim slot Britta holds. In any case, SCSU will have two new assistants compared to a year ago (when Jason Johnson and Jennifer Kranz were there, at least at the start of the season).

What do you think - will there be lots of people applying for SCSU assistant job(s), or are these types of roles hard to fill?

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

... I wouldn't think they would want to roll the dice with Harrington based on no experience with the female game.
Harrington must have some connection with the women's game, because he was at the WCHA tournament, hanging with the officials, coaches, and league brass. Strictly men's coaches off of the street don't typically do that.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

Agree! Harrington would bring instant respect and I don't feel he would have to much trouble making the adjustment to the womens game. Also feel Koch would be a very strong candidate. Not a big fan of Digit and feel would be very close to what they had.

Agree with WCHFan ... excited about the possibility of having Koch or Harrington behind the bench. Digit ... not so much.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

I'm going to say it won't be Harrington. I know there's a connection between him and Johnson at Wisco, but I don't buy the talk about how MJ is involved in the process or helping OSU find a coach. MJ, "yeah, he's a great guy. Hell of a recruiter, communicates well with players, has International experience, has the name recognition, knows his on-ice stuff. Yes you should hire him, he will probably give me a run for the money in two years."
Plus, John could be getting back into the men's game in Minnesota somewhere.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

I agree. There is no way Johnson would be giving advice to OSU. I'm sure if they asked he would recommend but he'd be involved in no way. Any word on any others getting an interview? I heard a rumor there was a very strong candidate this week.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

Heard from a reliable source in Buckeyeland that Diget Murphy is being considered, along with two other "finalists". Any else have an update?
The Clarkson co-coaches have visited tOSU for an interview. They may be the other two.

Per Cap Carey in today's Watertown Daily Times "Knights Tales"
There is a possibility that Clarkson could have to go through this process all over again on the women’s side as co-coaches Matt and Shannon Desrosiers have interviewed for the vacant Ohio State head coaching position.

That's an intriguing rumor. What coaches with the experience of these two and a bit of success wouldn't want to take the reigns of a team with the potential of the Buckeyes in the most successful, powerful and superior conference in the women's hockey universe? :)

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

I hear that Harvard has hired a new assistant. If what I hear is true, he is a former DIII men's assistant.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

What's the rule of thumb in the womens game. When a school hire's a new coach do they usually keep the current assistant coaches or bring in their own?

almost always let the coach hire their own, especially this early in the spring. if a hire is made later in the summer a lot of times they will keep the assistants that are already there (usually because contracts renew sometime in early summer, often july 1 and most schools will not eat the contract of an assistant coach in a sport like WIH)

From where I'm sitting (somewhere around Providence, Rhode Island), Ohio isn't far enough away to send Digit. Alaska would be nice.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

I don't qualify as a staunch supporter of the Husky women's hockey team or St. Cloud State U in general, I just have a simple belief, or theory if you prefer that the staff needs to win more of those recruiting battles among those Minnesota players that are being lured to Eastern programs...some of them at least, in order to have any hope of competing with the top of the conference. They'll never win all those recruiting battles but need to win a few more than they have in recent years. Need it fairly desperately to catch up IMO. ARM makes a good point in that it isn't just a matter of competition with Eastern programs either. They need to do better when competing for Minnesota recruits with the rest of the WCHA too. They've got some ground to cover in getting back to being more competitive. If you're having trouble selling your program to the local kid ya better focus some attention on the AAA type players from outside the state as well...but you really should be able to sell more local kids on playing for the Huskies...Huskies...Huskies, IMO. :)

I agree with a lot of what you have said about SCSU. I just don't see why they don't get a few more of those high end players(or at least judging by what we saw on the ice last year didn't get those players for at least the last few years) to come to SCSU. I don't like speaking bad of most coaching staffs but I'm really starting to doubt if Giesen is the right person to lead this program out of the basement.

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

Previous discussion on this possibility concluded that he was recently extended and SCSU isn't in financial position to be eating any contracts at this time.

The financial circumstances for SCSU would likely preclude a change at the top. I'm not sure he's the guy to turn it around just the same.

ARM probably has a good grip on the reality on the SCSU coaching picture...at least in the immediate future. I think you and I are on the same page regarding the person currently at the helm. I would like nothing better than to see the current staff get it together and turn the program around with some much improved recruiting success. I think the program, school and city have enough to offer to sway some top local talent in their direction. The thing I don't know is what kind of scholarship offers are the local studs considering inadequate as compared to other offers they're receiving. Assuming of course that's is a prime reason for the decision for some...at least.

Reliable OSU source relates that Nate Handrahan (fr. R Morris?) hired as new OSU coach.

Wow, shocking right hand turn. I didn't see that name coming. If true, I think he will do well. I was always amazed with his recruiting classes. He was able to bring some decent kids to RMU.

Brilliant move by OSU. Hiring a coach with probably the worst record in D1 hockey over the last 5 years takes guts. Maybe they saw something in Handrahan that he has not shown to the rest of the hockey world to date. What could that be? Where has he been hiding his special hockey coaching talents? Wow--with he and Digit being two of OSU's finalists--that says a lot about the level of candidate OSU was able to attract.

Cap'n Obvious, how amazing could his recruiting classes have been if RMU consistantly lost 20 games a year in the CHA?

Re: Coaching Changes - 2011 Offseason Edition

On the surface, I'm a bit under-whelmed, but coaching wise, the Buckeyes had no where but up to go. We'll support the new coach, hope that he can both coach and recruit. Only time will tell.

By the way, my sources indicate that Digit was never a serious candidate, her past got her an interview. Also, one of the early finalists was offered, but turned the job down. I have been reluctant to discuss the coach search because I believe some things should remain somewhat private. As an example, it's my understanding the RMU coach was going to inform his team tonight, with the official announcement tomorrow. The earlier post here may have screwed that up a bit .

I also have been reluctant to discuss Barto -- didn't want to dance on her apparent coaching grave -- but I believe virtually any change will make this a better program.
