Coaching carousel?

IMO, this is comparing apples and oranges. UConn hockey was not competitive in Atlantic Hockey, or DIII for that matter. There's a difference between being in the dregs of Hockey East and being in the dregs of competitive college hockey. The UConn program did not enter D1 until 1998, many years after all of the examples you mentioned. As a long-time fan, I can say that this year was the best year UConn Hockey has ever experienced, and the last few years have been very exciting for us older supporters of the program. UConn has been very competitive for the last few years and it's been great.

All of your examples are about programs with serious hockey history. I remember Billy Riley running a successful program at Lowell in the 80's, UNH has been a mainstay of New England college hockey for a long time, and of course NU. All of these schools you compare UConn to have very strong college hockey history. How are they comparable to UConn? I'm not following your logic.

Either way, I'm not here to debate, IMO (as a supporter), I am over the moon with the success and momentum of UConn Hockey! I hope Coach Cav stays, but I also understand it's the yin and yang of building a program.

* UNH was competitively dismal throughout the '80's, before Umile took over
* UMass Lowell was rarely a factor in D-1 HEA for many years prior to Bazin
* Northeastern was mediocre for generations prior to Madigan

BUT the most apt comparison of the bunch is this one ...

* UMass WAS the dregs of HEA before the arrival of Carvel. He's accomplished many times more than Luce has at UConn, and done it in significantly less time. This example blows away the "look where we came from, and where we are now" argument for Luce/UConn.

Your program had its best year in its history this season. Your coach has enjoyed the benefit of a ton of patience, lots more than many other coaches with similar records have enjoyed before losing their jobs. If that's enough to convince BC he's the man to take over for York, I'll tell you right here and now, UConn fans will find out fairly quickly from the next guy that Luce wasn't that great. And BC fans will have confirmed for them what they already know, which is that York was a once-in-a-lifetime coach for their program, and replacing him is not going to be an easy task. Just as replacing Coach Parker down at the other end of Comm Ave. has proven to be a much more difficult task than many at BU ever imagined it might be ...

According to the reports since Cole's firing, there's "Big Ten money," and then there's "Michigan State money." Cole's reported salary of around $325,000 is considerably less than Motzko's or Granato's salary, and is even slightly behind Hastings' salary at Minnesota State. Don't know if they intend to up that for a new coach, but if not, they're not luring Hastings with money.

Ok, Motzko and Hastings salaries are well deserved and Cole's obviously wasn't. (Granato underperforming as well)

At the end of the day MSU-East Lansing will have little to no issue bettering MSU-Mankato in the financial compensation department. Peach Bowl $$, Men's hoop$, Big Ten Network $$$ etc. affords these options.

The women's basketball coach makes over $500,000 a year. The offensive coordinator for the football team makes $1 million a year, which is a lot for a team that never scores. The question isn't whether Sparty has the money to spend on athletics. The question is whether Sparty wants to spend the money on hockey. And to this point, the answer has been no.

As recently as last month I would have agreed wholeheartedly with what you said about MSU's hockey program being seemingly ignored.

I was actually kind of surprised Cole was deep-sixed even with the lack of on ice results and players leaving the program or de-commiting left and right. Thought school would have waited to see how next season would have played out with the Munn-renovation but Cole's firing shows at east some refocus of the hockey program ad MSU's coming with checks to write!

BTW not sure what you mean by MSU's (football) offense never scoring?!? They averaged 31 Points and 428 yards of offense a game in 2021!......Spartan D on the other hand.........

Has someone compiled a list of coach’s salaries? I’d be interested to see how it stacks up. Obviously not as easy with the private schools but there’s ways around that

So Cavanaugh parlayed potential BC interest into a better deal at U.Conn.
So Greg Brown at BC?

Brown is who the BC "blogger" had ranked first and Mike McMahon as well. So unless they go off the board for someone like Hastings, yes it is looking like Greg Brown.

And so I am on record that's not what I would have done. To me, Cav is a better option than Greg Brown. But what do I know.

Now I'm intrigued Chuck. Was Umile ever rumored to be going somewhere else?

If you can get past paywall issues, this is an article outlining Umile's 2000 dalliance with UMass ...

Umile will stay (seacoastonline.com)

Article also touches on "When Dick Met Marty" during the latter's time at Colorado College, which ironically saw the CC AD eventually follow his paisan buddy east to Durham a few months later.

So yeah, we've seen this mov(i)e before ...

If Rand Pecknold is another Jack Parker, the Terriers should sign him up.
Yup, Parker was brash and ultra competitive, and spoke his mind. But if anyone thinks he lacked class, look at the way he treated Travis Roy all those years until Travis' death. Or all that he did for John Cullen and his family when he was at Dana Farber. He has been there for his players long after they left BU.

You do know that Carvel started at UMass 20 years after they had been in HEA, right?
