Clarkson & SLU @ RPI & Union (3/1, 3/2)

Re: Clarkson & SLU @ RPI & Union (3/1, 3/2)

Very bad news for SLU. Hobey Baker candidate, Kyle Flanagan went under the knife Tuesday to have his appendix removed. Looks like he will be out 7 to 10 days. Hope he feels better soon!

What awful news for us Saints fans and for Kyle and his teammates. The rest of the squad will have to step up as losing your captain and best all round player for a key final weekend series is a tough pill to swallow. Couldn't get the link to work. Not sure if the below one will work any better.

Because it is an operation done so frequently-most take it as just routine. But any time you have to be put to sleep and any time the abdomen is opened, you have to have concern. He is without doubt a talented player and here's hoping he recovers uneventfully. I think the 7 days would be extremely optimistic. i would think more like 10-14(but I am one of those old time conservative docs)

Coach Carvel said the same think Doc. That is why somehow a scenario where we could earn a first round bye becomes all the more important because that almost guarantee's he would be well enough to get back into the lineup. Not an impossible task without him as Coach Carvel points out it is a team game not an individual game, however, when you remove your best all around player from a line up, that is a tough break. Hope the rest of the team can pick up the slack for him and play some inspired hockey.

In a matter of a few hours we have became a team desperate for the first round bye. It's not out of reach and I think 1 win this weekend could get it done, but it's now became much more difficult with the injury to Kyle. Battle hard out there Saints and get the job done. We need to be strong defensively and this would be a good weekend for Wenny to be solid. Let's Go Saints!!!

Hockey is truly a team sport-all 18 skaters plus the goalie have to contribute. I have often seen teams get inspired to play their best when one of their top plays is out of the line up. I expect SLU to be just as tough to play as ever. I am sure Coach Carvel would never take the chance of rushing KF back into the line up too soon. There are sports where you aren't called upon to be 100% all the time-but hockey is not one of them. Even the most minor of injuries can greatly affect your performance. There is no designated hitter or pinch runner in hockey. When you are out there, you will have to skate at full speed, for 30-45 seconds and get hit by some guy who is 6'2 and 215 as hard as he can hit you. One of the things i respect about the RPI coach Seth Appert is the fact that he has never hesitated for one minute to err on the side of caution with a player who is the least bit incapacitated. I wish back many years ago when I played sports that my coaches had that attitude-instead of just wrapping up my knee or taping my shoulder and sending me back in to 'tough it out'. I have paid the price over the years with enough orthopedic surgeries to keep my colleagues in business.

Though I'm thinking I may not want to look either night.:(

I remember one season during which it seemed that every time I tuned in, either the other team had just scored or was just about to score. :(

Not this year (so far) but still....even when I chuckle when I see superstition in others, that does nothing to lessen it in myself.

Like Daniel Kahneman said, "just because I study this stuff doesn't make me immune to its influences."

RPI/Clarkson will be on channel 1026 for those in these areas (includes Syracuse, Potsdam, and Ithaca): http://twcs.tv/about.asp

Dude-i called Comcast here in NJ and asked if any of the games this weekend involving RPI would be carried or picked up by any of the umpteen sports channels I pay for. I got a quick response of NO. But then was asked "What is RPI?" I should have guessed after all these years-nothing changes. Back in the sixties i had people ask me if I was attending a military school.:(

FF: Superstition is my middle name. I once started a thread on USCHO about it asking fans about their superstitions and rituals before games. I had always thought I was the only nutcase out there but was pleasantly surprised to have a ton of responses-pretty much as weird as my own.

Sorry to hear that. He's a hell of a hockey player --best for a speedy recovery. RPI will need to be ready to go...SLU is always well coached and I'm sure will be motivated to go the extra mile for their captain.

Re: Clarkson & SLU @ RPI & Union (3/1, 3/2)

RPI is currently in its test when it comes to depth. Now comes SLU's depth test. They have been so dependent upon the Carey/Flanagan duo for their scoring opportunities.

Re: Clarkson & SLU @ RPI & Union (3/1, 3/2)

Appert even acknowledged it on Twitter (link)! I'm considering wearing a jacket over my rugby to get in the spirit. Should be funny if enough people participate.

Going to try to get the hair in the slick-back look? Granted, if I tried, it'd look a little more like Barry Melrose... :p
