CHL to NCAA Recruiting Megathread

Quebec Remparts put 6 picks together and traded them to Chicoutimi for the #9 pick to take James Scantlebury. Chicoutimi got the 37th pick in this draft, a 2027 1st rounder, two 3rd round picks in 2026, and two 4th round picks in 2026.

Chicoutimi trades the 14th pick to Cape Breton for two picks, a 2026 1st rounder, and a 2027 2nd rounder. Cape Breton use that 14th pick to take Olivier Charron.

Québec Remparts select Carter Meyer at 17th, the first American-born QMJHL first round pick since 2013.
Is this a wasted pick? He seems quite committed to the U17 USNDTP where he will follow in father’s(Freddy “the hack”) footsteps. Likely then onto the U18 USNDPT after that and after off to BU. Will he ever actually play in Quebec? I would think they would chose kids not going USNDTP route.

It's always a gamble, but rarely do CHL players make their teams out of camp, so either way he might not have been on their roster. NTDP has had trouble keeping players of late, and most of their graduates have done an extra year of juniors before going to college.

Hadi Kalakeche, QMJHL Scout for EP, was surprised, thought it was out of left field. However, he also pointed out that if any team is going to put the legwork in to convince someone, it would be the Remparts.

Penn State gets a commitment from 08 wing Pierce Mbuyi, this year's OHL Rookie of the Year. Put up 52 points with Owen Sound Attack this season, expected to be a 1st rounder in 2026. won't arrive for at least one year, but a big get.

Also on the other side of the CHL/NCAA dynamic changing...

Rudy Guimond (Yale) has announced he will be spending another year with Moncton to finish out his junior eligibility. Plenty of players are pushing back their arrival a year or so often due to the influx of new older players, which is usually the best for their development. Extra true for goalies, who there is usually too many of looking to stay for their 20 year old year. He gets to be the #1 guy after being on that dominant tandem with Mathis Rousseau.

CHL-wide awards are here.

The nominations for each are the winners of the equivalent award from each of the 3 leagues. For example, Goaltender of the year was between Jackson Parsons (Clarkson), Jacob Steinman (BGSU), and Max Hildebrand (BSU).

If I include an NHL team in their name, that means they have signed their ELC.

CHL Player of the Year: Gavin McKenna, WHL Medicine Hat Tigers- at 17, he is the 3rd youngest winner, only behind Crosby and Tavares who both won at 16
CHL Top Scorer: Michael Misa, OHL Saginaw Spirit
CHL Coach of the Year: Gardiner MacDougall, QMJHL Moncton Wildcats
CHL Humanitarian Player of the Year: Maxwell Jardine, QMJHL Charlottetown Islanders
CHL Scholastic Player of the Year: Mathieu Cataford (VGK), QMJHL Rimouski Océanic
CHL Goalie of the Year: Jackson Parsons (Clarkson), OHL Kitchener Rangers
CHL Rookie of the Year: Landon DuPont, WHL Everett Silvertips
CHL Sportsman of the Year: Berkly Catton (SEA), WHL Spokane Chiefs
CHL Top Draft Prospect of the Year: Matthew Schaefer, OHL Erie Otters
CHL Defenseman of the Year: Sam Dickinson (SJS), OHL London Knights

Update on Rudy Guimond: reportedly is no longer committed to Yale. No word on if he has a new commitment, could be using this upcoming season in Moncton to boost his stock to get to the best possible situation.

BC commit Matthew Frost signs with Kingston Frontenacs

Also Jackson Smith to Penn State is official

Alex Huang, 2025 draft eligible for Chicoutimi, has committed to Harvard for 26-27. Another one of those recruitments that was in process before the player went to the CHL and can now be revisited.

UConn gets a commitment from 05 F Alexandre Blais of Rimouski Océanic. 2024 4th round pick to Anaheim. Only the second commitment for UConn after Carlin Dezainde. This would be Blais' overage year, and after 2 straight seasons of being over a point per game in the Q, probably a good idea to continue his development somewhere with tougher competition. UConn lost very little of their roster from last season so they haven't been as active.

CHL Import Draft is set for July 2nd. A few weeks back we even saw the first ever trade of Import Draft picks between teams. I'd keep an eye on any commits from Europe on the younger side potentially getting picked, it usually means they've expressed willingness to come.

As for McKenna, plenty of the same rumors floating around. My favorite joke theory is that he ends up saying "screw it, I wanna be close to home" and signs with one of the Alaskas (he's from Whitehorse). But now I present an alternative theory: he wants to pretend he's close to home and goes to UConn. I know some people on these boards like calling them Yukon anyways.
