Chile Earthquake, Hawaii, California and Alaksa Tsunami warnings

Re: Chile Earthquake, Hawaii, California and Alaksa Tsunami warnings

Who would have thought CNN would become the national version of WCCO radio.

For those of you not familiar with the evil neighbor, they continually hype storms then afterward take calls from "Bob in Fridley" who inform listeners there's a branch down in his backyard. Compelling radio.

Case is point, Marc from WI is live on CNN & is three cocktails into the day...

I've seen some pictures from friends in Hawaii right now and they're drinking while waiting.

WCCO helped me out storm chasing while working at KSTP though! :D Just listened and drove to the area they were calling from. I always liked the callers, "It's raining pretty good right now..."

Re: Chile Earthquake, Hawaii, California and Alaksa Tsunami warnings

Re: Chile Earthquake, Hawaii, California and Alaksa Tsunami warnings

In Chilean Earthquake news that's NOT related to the US....

CNN is showing a lot of damage- granted, this quake was 500-1000x stronger than the one in Haiti, but, as opposed to Haiti, Chile has been having building codes for 'quakes since the 1920's.

I wonder if some of the codes were only built "enough" to pass inspection....

There are modern bridges down, significant damage to modern buildings, etc. I would have expected some less damage to *some* of the newer structures.

That being said, while there is very significant damage, and many of these structures will not be liveable anymore, they did stay up enough to save lives. Thank God for that.

Nothings gonna happen. It will be about a 22cm sea level rise and the hype will be over.:D

sorta makes you wonder how they can tell :p

Well, in all of these you have to figure "where the earthquake occurred" in regards to closeness to the water, "how deep the earthquake occurred" because you can have a strong quake below the surface and not nearly have as much of an impact, and "the magnitude of the quake itself" because we're on log-scale folks... though i'm not sure if that's base-10 or base-16. An 8.0 earthquake is that much less intense than a 9.0 earthquake... they aren't even the same creatures.

So, i don't think we can necessarily be shocked that Hawaiian civilization wasn't cleaned from this earth.

I believe it is base 10. An 8.0 is 1/10 the magnitude of a 9.0.

There's not much you can do to prevent damage from 8.0-9.0 earthquake. It can be minutes of violent violent shaking.

In other news, a major earthquake hit Vancouver about 4:30 today. That was when Parise scored to send the Olympic hockey game into overtime.;)

Re: Chile Earthquake, Hawaii, California and Alaksa Tsunami warnings

I haven't been watching the coverage...how many of the reporters/anchors have been pronouncing "Chile" the same as "Chili?" Probably the same mouth breathers who pronounce "Iraq" as "eye-RACK" and say people from Afghanistan are "Afghans."
