Chess

Re: Chess

he should have stayed retired. next we know barry bonds will look at ask for a tryout in spring training somewhere.

Re: Chess

I read that article yesterday and was all ready to jump on here to make sure this thread got resurrected.

Looking forward to it. Carlsen may be on his way to GOAT status, but Fabi is only three ELO points behind him. And he has beaten the Norwegian more than once. The big advantage the defending champion has is experience in a tournament like this, which you can't get anywhere else.

(I can't believe my company blocks chess.com because it's a "gaming" site. Sheesh...)

Re: Chess

They do speed chess if it remains tied after Round 12...which is probably more like 3x3 or 4x4. :p:D:D

It's a stepped approach. So, first it's 4x4 then 3x3... :-)

They do quicker games (I think 25-minutes) before they get into an all out speed game. Then, it's sudden death shootout style -- one five-minute game with white getting only four minutes. Seriously! A draw gives the defending champion the title.

According to the FIDE match rules, this is how the tiebreaker will go:

- First, a mini-match of four rapid games will be played. Each player gets 25 minutes for all of his moves, plus 10 bonus seconds after every move played.

- If the players remain tied after those four games, they’ll play a mini-match of two blitz games. Each player will get five minutes, plus three seconds after every move. They’ll keep playing those, if the two-game mini-matches are tied, for up to five total mini-matches (10 total blitz games).

- Finally, if none of that settles it, they’ll play one sudden-death game using a format known as Armageddon. White gets five minutes and black gets four minutes, but a drawn game counts as a win for black.

This is my new hero:

In 1920, Szmul Rzeszewski, age 8, played chess against eight grand masters simultaneously.

He lost every game.

So ... regulation, a 5x5 OT, a 3x3 OT, and a shootout. <-- NCHC a couple seasons ago?
