CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

We dont run B2 sadly. A Class (Sports and Special Events) ran the B2 feed in the fall and a select few games before the end of the first semester. We've expressed interest in continuing it with Cat Chat, though the director of the B2 feed here wasnt a fan of it and does not want to use a three camera set up or replays.

That's too bad, I really loved having replays available.

Alaska has a very nice B2 feed taken from a TV broadcast and the replays during those games were nice to see.

NMU has yet to put forth consistant outings this season. One weekend its looking up, the next things are looking down. The part that disturbs me is the fact the down weekends take place against teams we can beat if we play our game.

Forget the Tech games (in the rankings and also in terms of consistancy). Every time we play them its 2-1 or 1-0, or we lose by more than a goal. Its two teams that know each other very well and thats what you are going to get, reserved games.

Positives: We played two great games against Michigan State, and earned a split. The games against UNO at home were the best Ive seen this team play in ages. Skating, playing two way hockey, scoring, passing, break outs...etc.

Negs: Ties. If we were able to squeek one more goal by here and there, we could have a better record.

Goaltending: The Preseason Goaltender of the CCHA has been less then outstanding. He has played a lot better (before the UNO series), bringing his GAA to under 2.50 and save % to .921.

Look, things arent how we wanted them to be. Things rarely go as planned. Northern plays teams ahead of them in the standings (except Western) Alaska, Lake State, at home and at Michigan. If NMU wins out, the playoff prediction site says NMU has a 100% chance at making the NCAAs even if losing the Conf. Final. That'd put us at 20-10-6 to end the regular season. Which gives us a 58% chance at the third seed. As Davyd pointed out, that site isnt perfect since the CCHA uses a different scoring system, but it gives you a rough idea of scenarios. Will Northern win all ten games? Prob not. I think winning 6 or 7 is possible, and would go a long way in momentum for the playoffs.

Hate to say I told you so...but I told you so:p

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Olver is a very good player, I would probably take a couple other guys over him but he had a great year and is deserving. One thing I think he needs to do is show up more in bigger games. Over the last two years in the games I have seen of him against Miami he really hasn't done much. Maybe its isolated but doesn't take anything away from him deserving this award.

Perhaps you missed his shorthanded goal in game three of last year's CCHA playoff series AT Oxford.

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

OK, I miss a few days of posting and now I see how this thread has become, this institution vs that, this player/cast of players vs this, and the flame fest it has become. Come on people, this is about Alaska @ NMU for the 2nd Round.

Each team has dangerous Players that can make a team pay. NMU has to come out strong, play their style and control the puck, stay out of the box (STUPID PENALTIES), and simply win. I think Alaska has the capability to keep these games close or win one and hope NMU does not take this team lightly. The memories of UNO coming to Marquette several years back when Sidoruk was in net denied NMU the opportunity to go to the Joe and beyond and my travel plans that year already paid for. NMU needs to get past Alaska before going to the Joe, just my 2 cents.

The sandbox will be where I'll observe this years playoffs, not exactly in the cards for the Joe like each year, oh well... Could use some ice over here too, its getting hot.... :D

LETS GO CATS!!!!

Good points all. Re stupid penalties, the CCHA has to be considered home to some of the worst refs in college hockey. How many "stupid calls" get made is sadly a function of who is wearing the stripes. Sure, the kids do some silly things from time to time, but the adults (refs) are truly atrocious. McInchak, in particular, should be fired immediatley for gross negligence. I think some of these guys think their chances of getting lucky after the game is a function of how many times they blow the whistle.

I hope both squads play well but most of all I hope the refs get their act together.

This is an accurate statement. But in fairness to Olver, Miami is the best defensive team in the league by a big margin. Not many opposing forwards have many good games in Miami especially when they get last change and can get the matchups they want. Olver is not a big strong guy so he definitely is more effective on the olympic size ice at home.

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

I love the Olver talk and I hope he is huge this weekend but everyone looks at Olver, should make for openings for everyone on his line. That and staying out of the box!

It is almost Friday!

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Congrats to Reid Ellingson, named to CCHA Team of Scholar-Athletes.

I think Reid has the potential to be a really good CCHA goaltender next season when Stewart leaves. Walt obviously has more confidence in Stewart but Reid has very similar numbers 2.32 GAA and a .926 save %. I also think that Reid is technically a much stronger goalitender than Stewart.

I agree!
Penalties, special teams and goaltending will likely be the difference this weekend. In the 4 regular season meetings, the difference in penalties was 31-14 in favor of Alaska. NMU took twice as many penalties as Alaska. Both teams are defense first teams with great goaltending. These teams do not beat themselves. They wait for other teams to make mistakes and then try to capitalize. Not surprisingly the games have been low scoring and 3 of the 4 games have ended in ties. I predict that the team that wins the special teams battle this weekend will win the series, so long as goaltending is equal. NMU needs to be much more disciplined with regards to penalties. I do not like NMU's chances if they continue to give Alaska a 2-1 advantage on the power play.

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Taranto was 3-1-4 vs. NMU at Alaska including, I believe, a shoot-out winner.

In Marquette he was held off the scoreboard.

Alaska's top line has scored 25-31-56 since the new year.

NMU's top line has scored 24-28-52 since the new year (1 less game)

Just killing time creating some numbers.

The top lines are even, it's all going to be about which one comes to play and which team has other players step up.

Edit: In CCHA play, Alaska has taken less than 10 penalty minutes per game, easily the lowest in the league.

Edit2: They are also the only CCHA team not to give up a SHG during league play.

No they can't be the best in the league, they didn't even get a single defenseman on either all ccha team let alone an honorable mention...

The Brotherhood of the Red and White needs no individual honors, for they are the Brotherhood.

(Did I mention they are the Brotherhood, 14awl and awl41).

Thanks buddy, but I've got no problems eating some crow on this one. :D

I consider it a badge of honor that so many fans from other teams feel it necessary to single me out.

I'm looking forward to an NMU sweep this weekend!

Go Cats!

I agree, I'm good friends with a future 'Cat in Reed Seckel and last year Seckel and Ellingson were teammates for Green Bay in the USHL and I made the trip to catch a couple games and I came away very impressed with Ellingson, he looks to be a very serviceable CCHA netminder.

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

No one asked you Troll. When your input is wanted or warranted, you will ask me for permission and I may or may not grant it. Until then, do not continue posting in NMU threads that don't involve Miami. All you are doing is baiting and it's not appreciated.

Have we somehow crossed over into some bizarre alternate universe in which you are the omnipotent overseer?

Back to the subject at hand...as a college hockey fan (not affiliated with NMU, UA or Miami)...I will say this: If I could choose any series in the country to attend this weekend, I'd be headed to Marquette. This has all the makings of an epic series between two evenly matched teams that are both playing their best hockey of the season.

Let's Go 'Cats!

One game at a time from here on out. No looking over opponents. Winning is still the best route to both a big hunk of granite in March and a chunk of wood with some glass in it come April.
