CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Nothing taken away from the Cats but I think the only game stat they won was the score which of course counts the most :-(

It doesn't just count the "most" it's the "only" stat that matters.

Nice comeback by the Nooks last night, but I blame it on Shegos. He's a terrible, terrible official!

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

There will be no "easy" victory tonight for the Cats. The third period last night gave UA a ton of confidence and they will be even harder to contain knowing this could be their final game of the year.

Stewart MUST be stellar tonight because there will be a deluge of chances for the Nanooks. UA's team speed resulted in Cat penalties that snowballed into fatigue in the third. I've come to the realization that Northern will be shorthanded at least twice as many times as UA so the Cats have to tighten up defensively for any chance at winning tonight.

GO CATS!!!

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Actually the crowd wasn't a huge factor Friday. As usual they came fashionably late and NMU had a three goal lead by the time all the fannies were in the seats . By the second period the feeling was any shot was good. Two defensemen scored from the blueline...can't remember the last time I saw that at the Berry.

I never got a general sense of "oh no I can't believe this is happening" from the crowd. It was more a case of 1) don't give them momentum, 2) stop taking penalties 3) nothing is easy 4) the silver lining is we shouldn't be over confident tomorrow. This type of finish is not unusual for the Cats. Last time the 'nooks were here we ran out to a 3 goal lead and it ended up 3-2. The reverse is also true, we have been down several goals (3 in Alaska?) and came back to tie or win.

In many respects this was an ideal game for the coaching staff. The team got the win without the stars making a huge contribution on the scoreboard. Plenty of coaching fodder around penalties and the problem of not closing the deal remain. Additionally, making the NCAAs (a huge goal for the Seniors) mandates a win tonight so the risk of "we always got game 3" will never creep into the kids minds.

Talking to some of the players afterwards I was struck by how non-pulsed they were. The general feeling was 1) it was good to open with a win after a layoff and given that a third of the team recovering from a brutal bout of the flu 2) it was great to see other guys stepping up 3) The Nooks will bring it tomorrow for sure and we will deal with it when they do

This team is very resilent, very well coached and very talented. They have been to the Joe 6 out of 7 years so the pressures of this series doesn't seem particuarly overwhelming them. In fact, what is unusual is that they aren't on the road at MSU or Miami.

I expect the Nooks to come out (w/o Toranto)flying. Our guys will bend but won't make many mistakes, the Nooks will outshoot us 2 to 1 in the first period. We will get several odd man rushes because the Nooks are pressing and because that is just what we do. First period ends 1-0 Cats, stewie will look unbeatable and Nooks will be frustrated and tired. Second period will be evenly played with a trading of goals. The third period will be intense. This is the point at which the home ice/bye week chit gets cashed. The crowd will go nuts and the extra rest and home cooking will provide the edge.

In the end, the Cats will prevail and the Nooks will be on the outside looking in. Cats will win their opener at the Joe (finally) and will win an overtime thriller against a confident Miami team that truly wants no part of Stewie and NMU.

Just for Redhawkman, the OT winner will be scored by Olver because Redhawkman apparently missed last years OT winner by Olver in Oxford.

Let's get through tonight first. Win tonight. That's it.

And for the record, NMU has won the opener at the Joe. During the Walt Kyle era:
2002-03 Win vs MSU, Loss vs Ferris State, Win vs Ohio State
2003-04 Win vs MSU, Loss vs Michigan, Loss vs Miami

(;) Yes, I do realize that you mean the semi-final game)

...Nice comeback by the Nooks last night, but I blame it on Shegos...

Why blame Shegos? I have it on good authority that any statistic related to penalties, the PP, or the PK does not matter. Ought oh...conundrum.

God may have rested on the seventh day, but he was probably drinking beer and watching Sunday hockey. Praise the Lord. ;)

Go Nooks!

Why blame Shegos for the calls made by the other ref, Dean Sanborn? When Shegos reffed the NMU-LSSU series with Todd Lacina, the Lakers had just five PPs for the whole weekend. On Friday, each team got 4 minor penalties in the game. On Saturday, there were just three penalties total.

In all honesty, the power play count last night was right about where i would have had it. NMU did get a couple breaks. Sure, a trip could have been called against Alaska with 2 seconds left, but is there really any need to stop the game at that point?

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

You said it wildcatgoal. Just get this series done with because if the series goes to three Alaska definately has the momentum.

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

The final sales for the Puckheads are in. A couple of other Puckheads and myself sold 142 tickets between last night and tonights game. There seems to be more of a rush for tonights tickets after the win on Friday. I can honestly say that about a 1/4 of those tickets went to people that had no interest in attending the game until approached by one of us.

I think the push will be there from the crowd tonight early after yesturdays results.

I'd also like to share a little addition to the BEC decor that went up on Friday morning:

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

About midway through the second and NMU is up 2-0 on goals from Florek and Butcher. I am getting this from the CCHA live box score, because they don't broadcast this stuff in Afghanistan. From the score sheet it looks as if NMU held on in the first period being outshot 12-2, but NMU turned it around in the second period and I would think really stung UAF with a goal 31 seconds in.

GO CATS!!

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

End 2. Nannoks are done. They are spent physically and emotionally. Taranto lost his cool and tried to fight Miller. Cats start third with PP. Nanooks played their best hockey of the year in first period. Cats outshot 5 to 1. Stewie stoned them. They are much less sharp in 2nd. No penalties in third and cats win.

Fingers crossed

Stop sandbagging you d i c k. Just admit that NMU was the better team and we smoked them!!!

SWEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty ashamed that not one NMU "poster" besides Billy Blanks predicted a sweep. What is wrong with you people?

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Well, 7 trips to Detroit in 8 years. Only Michigan has been to the Joe more times since '03. Will we face Michigan or Ferris State? Tomorrow's Miami/OSU game will tell the story.

Ahhh that's great! Who kicked out the money for that?

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Junior was a fan of the new sign!

We're going to the Joe!! The seniors did a nice little salute at the end (and Butcher picked up the broom thrown on the ice and did a little sweeping.)

Thanks for a great series, Alaska. May the cards fall so that you only have a week off, and if not then congrats on a heck of a season.

Hey! Ho! We're going to the Joe!!

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

Congrats to NMU. Good luck the rest of the way.

UAF is currently at the bottom of a three-way tie for 12th in the PWR, which basically is the final spot in the NCAA tournament right now. I'm not optimistic that will hold out, but there's a chance.
