CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Look, the WCHA is not going to adsorb the CCHA. Just not going to happen so lets stop talking about it. UAH? I think they may come into the mix here as I dont think they were added due to the fact that the CCHA wanted Penn State over UAH. Thats clearly not happening so the CCHA might revisit the option. Also, maybe the likes of Niagara or Mercyhurst to the CCHA...as Atlantic Hockey restricts scholarships...so the CCHA could use that as leverage to pry one of those teams away.

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

The primary reason that Huntsville wasn't added was travel. The CCHA just lost Omaha and its lengthy journey. There was no real impetus to add another.

I believe its shorter travel for Ohio State, Miami and Bowling Green to go to UAH rather than NMU.

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

They likely would be welcome. But do they want to join a league where every road trip means flying?

They are in that situation already for every other sport since they are a BE member in everything but football. I'm sure if they wanted to save on costs they could probably work out scheduling with the BE and HE to have something like on a weekend where womens basketball is playing providence they could share the jet with the Hockey team to save on costs.

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Not for Bowling Green. Just OSU and Miami.

But Dave...just think...going to the south in January or February! Yeah, the ride might be dangerous down there but once you are there...warm* weather!

*Anything about 30 degrees to people in the UP or Upper Midwest is warm and shorts weather in those months.

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Realignment would make alot more sense to me than a combination.

Realignment does make more sense but in the long run the CCHA teams that are good Notre Dame and Miami will leave and teams will be replaced by Atlantic hockey teams and (mtu who does not want to go to the ccha) turning the CCHA into another medicore college hockey confrence.

Make one good confrence (WCHA) to compete against the Big Ten.

NMU and Notre Dame have already been in the WCHA. So why cant they come back in the league?

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Just to clarify, what color are the pastures that Notre Dame and Miami are leaving the CCHA for? I missed it the first time. Also missed it the 5th time.

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Um? Not sure where you got the numbers but Houghton is a lot more than 31 miles from Marquette.
Yeah, but you don't drive through Marquette on your way to Houghton if you're coming from the south.

Ah one of those crafty situations where its quicker to go through Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. I forget how big Michigan is sometimes.

Yeah, I think it was Notre Dame that those mileage numbers were actually for, so from South Bend it is faster to drive through Chicago and up US41.

Exactly. Why is the MTU grad explaining it to the soon to be NMU grad? And why is an NMU grad proving the MTU grad right? :p

It's quicker for Miami to drive up through I-65 to Chicago and come through Wisconsin for any proposed game in Houghton or for a game in Marquette.
Proposed closest trip for Miami as WCHA team:
Oxford to Houghton
via US141 through Iron Mountain and Crystal Falls. 683 miles.

Actual furthest* trip for Miami as CCHA team: Oxford to Marquette via M35/US41 through Escanaba. 643 miles.

*Squarebanks doesn't count, it's an all expense paid flight by UAf.

There's a limited number of sports that they are required to travel for BE play. Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Volleyball. The only requirement for the other sports (Golf, T&F, Cross Country, Tennis) is that they participate in the Big East championships.

I think you are excluding Lax from list of sports where they have to do BE play. Point is of the sports on that list Mens bball is the only one where they are making a profit. There is a good chance that once they complete their new arena Notre Dame Mens hockey will also be profitable so paying for the flights will not be a big deal.

Because Im not from Michigan, or anywhere remotely close to the Midwest. I didnt even know the "UP" existed before coming here for school. Im good with traveling and knowing how to get to places that are remotely relevant. The UP is remote, but clearly not very relevant.

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Why should the WCHA care about the CCHA when the CCHA didn't care about the survival of UAH's program?

Is that kind of like when the WCHA didn't care about the viability of BSU until they got UNO to come with Blais, who made sure BSU had a home? Many years that BSU was snubbed, and would have been again without UNO. I don't disagree that UAH should have been admitted, based on what little I knew, but don't go out there thinking that the WCHA did some grand and glorious thing with BSU.

Uh, you do know that NMU was offered a spot in the WCHA before UNO did, right?

It was BSU + whoever they could poach. NMU was asked to "come home" to the WCHA, which was declined by the Athletic Director at NMU. UNO was next on the list (due to Blais).

If NMU's AD wasn't so hell bent on utilizing the hockey program as a recruitment tool for general admission to the University, NMU would have been back in the WCHA this season, and not newcomer UNO.
