CC/DU vs. Mercyhurst & Air Force

Maybe a joint thread will drum up some traffic this week.

The AHA is 8-43-5 against nonconference opponents. Mercyhurst is 0-6-0 in nonconference games and Air Force is 0-4-0.

The Air Force game is more of a concern. Their arena will be sold out and they will be all jacked up to beat us. They defeated CC last year 4-1, DU 5-2 in 2008 and only lost to DU & CC by 2-1 scores in 2006-07. Luckily CC will soften them up on Friday night.

Re: CC/DU vs. Mercyhurst & Air Force

As long as they play with the same intensity as the Sioux series I don't see any reason why they wouldn't sweep! :D

Re: CC/DU vs. Mercyhurst & Air Force

Matching the intensity of a trip to UND against an AHA non-con weekend is going to be difficult for the Pios, and that's where you can see a good team potentially get tripped up. DU has an annoying habit of playing to the level of the competition. The last AHA opponent that came to Denver was Holy Cross in last season's Denver Cup and DU tied them in regualtion and needed a shootout win to advance. Sometimes, cupcakes are very hard to digest. Air Force in their barn is no picnic, either. DU got whomped the last time we were in there in 2008, and while this year's AFA team is not as good on paper, Frank Seratorre will have them always up to play DU.

For DU, this is a good series to tune up for the drive to the post-season and to get some underperformers performing again. I hope they play it like a league series, and turn the UND wins into some momentum going forward.

Re: CC/DU vs. Mercyhurst & Air Force

With Jesse Martin out, I think this weekend would be a good chance for the Goal Czar to get on track if Gwoz dresses him. One reason DU is around the 3 goals per game scoring rate is the lack of production from Salazar this year and Maiani's reduced production earlier in the year although he seems to be playing much better as of late. If Salazar could get things going the last 10 games of the season it would really help the offensive production of the team. It was nice to see 3 lines score last Saturday against UND and the waved off goal was by the 4th line. If DU can get more balanced scoring these last 10 games, it will take them a long way in the post-season.

Re: CC/DU vs. Mercyhurst & Air Force

Air Force and Mercyhurst are #2 and #3 in the AHA. Both the AHA and CHA surprised the hockey world with deep runs in the NCAAs last year. On paper DU is the heavy favorite this weekend, but the boys have to stay focused to keep marching forward to Motown.

Re: CC/DU vs. Mercyhurst & Air Force

I think both CC and DU will be up for Air Force after the past few years. It will be tough for the Falcons to steal a win this weekend. DU is clearly the better team.

The real question is whether Mercyhurst can steal one. They are the class of the AHA this year, have solid goaltending and can light the lamp. It would not surprise me to see the Lakers go 1-1. (See CC-Sacred Heart last year)

I'm glad that DU faces Air Force on Saturday after Colorado College hopefully takes some the starch out of them. Wouldn't surprise me if Air Force beats CC on Friday night.

No question the "mid-majors" in college hockey can beat any of the big boys on any given night. But the AHA's non-conference record is appalling this year. The CHA has some great quality non-conference wins. In AHA, none come to mind.

Re: CC/DU vs. Mercyhurst & Air Force

Mercyhurst's non-conference record is 0-6-0 so far this year. They are 0-2-0 against WCHA teams.

UAA 5-3
UAF 5-1
WMU 5-1
WMU 4-3
UMD 6-0
UAH 4-1

They have been outscored by 20 goals 29-9 in non conference play.

AFA's non-conference record is 0-4-0 so far this year. All 4 games occurred at the beginning of the season and against CHA teams.

BSU 3-1
BSU 7-3
UAH 4-2
UAH 4-2

They have been outcored by 10 goals 18-8 in non conference play.

Only caveat to that I'll add is that those were the first and second weeks of October, when we were struggling to rebuild a blue line. It's been a long time since Air Force has gone through a season without a non-conference win.

True statement. After some progress last year, this season has been a huge step backward. Once Bobby Mo and Viagara join, we'll be able to count the two wins over Miami.

Beat CC on Friday ;) :D

Re: CC/DU vs. Mercyhurst & Air Force

Is CC forfeiting their game on Friday against AFA

So DU is going to have to play Mercyhurst and AFA on Friday. :D

And then AFA again on Saturday.

Yep! Go Cadets! The hole between Howe's legs has been growing bigger every weekend since early November. :p :D I bet the AF b-ball team could score on him. Glad we chose the 57 instead.

:D Just having fun with you. CC and DU should win both of these games. I would expect CC to be pretty jacked up to play Friday night. If they would have a let down it might be Saturday.

He shut the door against SCSU on Saturday when he had too.

I think the key against AFA this weekend is to shadow Lammy. Put your best defensive forward on him all night. CC gets a little advantage as they are home and get the last change while DU will be on the road and have to match-up on the fly.

I want to see DU treat these two teams like they did UNO on New Year's Day in the Denver Cup.

For those who get it, the DU/AFA game on Sat will be on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain.
