Castleton State Hockey 2012-2013

Re: Castleton State Hockey 2012-2013

They don't complain about every call people just cant handle their physical game; yes they do take some bad
Penalties but their just playing hard.

Yes, they do....and they have a reputation for doing that as well....Only seen them once this year against USM (the one in which they took only 3 penalties) and after EVERY call it was required 15 seconds to explain each penalty....There was also 3 or 4 times when they called the refs over to ***** about icing....The refs know this, the refs complain about this and the refs talk to each other about this: they will never go anywhere until the rectify this problem....Who can't handle their physical game???? I don't think anybody is intimated by CSC, and like I said before teams will start to scratch the them from their schedule unless the figure out how to change this reputation..... You can play hard, physical and NOT take penalties: I mean as much as it pains me to say this: look at Norwich, they play hard and take very few penalties....

"Playing Hard" is one thing. Taking as many Checking From Behind penalties (which is a very serious thing that can cause injury, and is generally the result of a blatant disregard for the safety of the opponent), and even taking two of them on the exact same play, is a completely different matter.

Hooking, tripping, holding, high-sticking... those penalties result from "just playing hard".
Checking From Behind, boarding, and roughing... those penalties result from recklessness and violence.

In the 4 games they've played, they've been called for penalties in that 2nd group EIGHT ( 8 ) times.

Re: Castleton State Hockey 2012-2013

A lot of chatter for a team that's 1-2-1 including losses to the 8th and 10th place teams in the conference last season... I'd chalk that up to a little more than poor reffing or unfairly being picked on for complaining... "

Most teams play hard. Very few commit penalties at this rate.

This is not aimed at you HockeyKing, but if Castleton was such a wonderful team, where are the fans posting their attributes vs complaining about refs? Castleton didn't even have a thread until you started it yesterday, and I don't remember ever seeing a frequently posted on thread for them in the past. I have seen them play, and they can be very good, but I don't see a supportive fan base or one that is really proud of them. That is unfortunate. As a Norwich fan, I have posted about the team's success and their weakness, including taking penalties unnecessarily. I have even been known to bash the refs occassionally. However, I usually try to be encouraging and supportive, or at the very least, thought provoking. Maybe Castleton needs a stronger fan base, or maybe the fan base needs a stronger team? IMHO, the norm is that the teams who play consistantly well (whether or not they win or lose), have a lot of support from their fans, which is affirmed on this web site through their threads. I have to say that I have been shocked by their record so far, I really hope that Castleton rises to the occassion, it is great fun to have a rivalary with in the state, as in last years "Battle of Vermont". Good luck to the Castleton team and it's fans.

My view is that as soon as a Castleton thread is opened it turns into a bashing of the team. They throw snowballs, they take penalties, they are goons. Other teams fans hijack the thread so it just doesn't make a lot of sense to try to post about Castleton here until the other posters let Castleton fans have a dialog.

I read about other teams, but don't post negative things about them unless it has a direct bearing on the conversation. I notice a small number of fans the take great joy of piling on a Castleton thread. Just look back on the entries in this thread. I don't think you will see many Castleton posters here because we are not allowed to have a thread that we can use to discuss our team.

Boo hoo: come on....Seriously, somebody asked a question about what was wrong with CSC and if you don't like the answer(s) then don't open yourself up to that line of questioning....I feel that the head in the sand and everybody is out to get us runs rampant in the CSC community....If you have a bad rap, then try to change it....I didn't feel the need bring up getting peppered with ice balls by CSC students a couple years ago because it is irrelevant and didn't answer the first question a CSC fan asked on this thread yet you bring me up as being villain again!!!

From the Castleton games I have seen it appears to me they have one of the strongest fan bases in New England. Maybe not Norwich, Middlebury, or Bowdoin strong but they get very good attendence at games. The student support is also strong and the students have to travel 15 miles from Castleton to Rutland to see the games. I recongnize that Castleton has a less than favorable rep among a lot of fans but I think part of the problem is Castleton is attempting to raise there program to the same level as Norwich and Plattsburgh which is very difficult considering the facilities and resources thoes schools have. Castleton plays the Sunday after the Primelink so I plan to check out how they are playing. Most teams in New England have few if any fans that post on USCHO. Take Plymouth an up and coming team: myself and a couple of other posters are the only ones interested in the program. I will be looking forward to the Norwich/Castleton game on 12-1.

Again I say, "I have seen them play, and they can be very good," and "I have to say that I have been shocked by their record so far, I really hope that Castleton rises to the occasion, it is great fun to have a rivalry with in the state, as in last years "Battle of Vermont". Good luck to the Castleton team and it's fans." If my other comments seem like bashing to you, then I bash my own team whenever I make an observation about having an "off night", "could have played a much better game", etc, etc. My apologies for having an opinion and for currently being sarcastic, I blame myself, no-one else.

Maybe Castleton can start a new thread with a positive note and give all of us bashers a chance to redeem ourselves.

Don't think I BASHED TEAM only said and Refer to Post #2 which was the First answer to question
"Maybe less penalties"

Re: Castleton State Hockey 2012-2013

One of the reasons Castleton along with other schools dont have a strong fan base on here is because alot of people have no clue what the USCHO even is. Also I do agree Castleton takes alot of penalties, which is holding back from their true potential. I will admit from some of the games there are penalties such as cross checking which should not happen at all because people can get really hurt, but little things such as hitting to hard puzzles me. Castleton is a very physical team, and can play very well, hopefully they pull it together before they play Norwhich becuse that games going to be a "blood bath".

Didn't mean to make you feel that I was portraying you as a villain. I only included that item as it had nothing to do with the team, but it dominated many Castleton posts you made for at last a 2 year period.

I have never had my head in the sand regarding the Castleton program. There had and it seems that there are still some players who engage in "stupid" play. In the early years they had some players who were not suited to the ECAC East, but those guys worked hard and helped build the team into a competitor.

I stated in a post some time ago, that the USCHO posters have to let the Castleton fans grow with the team. They have very strong following in Rutland and have some locals that travel to see the team from time to time. No program starts with a Norwich type following when they start.

Re: Castleton State Hockey 2012-2013

Just my own opinion but I believe a stronger pre-season schedule like playing a Canadian U team or the USA under 18 team would of helped the team more than going to Austria.

I am addressing the years that Castleton is allowed to travel overseas. Castleton's school schedule gives then a week break every 5 weeks. The European trip utilizes this time so that the players do not miss school time and it provides them with an experience that can not be gotten from exhibition games against Canadian teams. Also the team spends time together in an environment that foster team building as they are spread out in off-campus housing while at school. With the new start time for the practices and conference games the timing is more relevant than it was 4 years ago.

My wife and I accompanied them on the 1st trip and the experience was unbelievable. Touring European towns and playing hockey is something that my surpassed my son's expectations. I know that this might seem out of place, but there is more to the college experience than sports. The cultural experience is just as important.

Additionally, it gives the team a purpose as they raise money to off-set their own personal expenses during the years leading up to the trip.

I agree with all you have said here, what a great all around experience! I went to the Castleton site and read some of the blogs. They and the pictures were awesome. Wish I had done that when I was in college, although going to Florida for spring training for a week was not only fun but, a great way to beat the Northern mud season!

It's very quiet here on the Castleton thread. Castleton fans, the team needs your support now more than ever.

Re: Castleton State Hockey 2012-2013

I don't think I've ever seen that called.

If the hit was hard into the boards, I have seen it called for boarding many times. When Selleck was at Oswego and take a run at someone near the boards, he would get called for boarding. Because I couldn't unerstand the penalties on clean hits I found out that

Boarding = A player shall not body check, cross-check, charge or trip an opponent from the front or side in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently into the boards.

Needless to say, I was a little suprised that you could get a penalty for hitting too hard???
