Castleton Leaving LEC For MASCAC Effective 2027-28 Season

VTSU Castleton announced this morning that effective next year they will be a core member of the MASCAC, bringing all 20 of their varsity programs (inlucding men's and women's ice hockey) under the MASCAC umbrella.

Any thoughts on how Castleton stacks up against the other MASCAC teams?

Agreed. If Castleton doesn't win the league (both genders) the first year, I'll be shocked.
I think Castleton definitely becomes a major threat in the conference on both sides, but I wouldn't said they are a shoe in. This isn't the Alex Todd Castleton squads. I understand the MASCAC is a significant step down from the NEHC and Little East, but still.

Everything you said is accurate...but I stand by it. Castleton hasn't found (remotely) the success they had under Todd but they've been a competitive squad the last few years. As respectfully as possible, the MASCAC stinks. If they don't win the league, they should be very disappointed.

With Anna Maria’s exit, Castleton should have a pretty good shot for the MASCAC barring anything Fitchburg can put up. That and it’ll straighten out alignment for other teams like football. Definitely a gamble on both sides of things tho. Unless they can come in and dominate, they’re not going to be in a great position to recruit unless they match what Plymouth accomplished.

On the flip side, the MASCAC gets some extra stability with another public college as member. Except we’ll see how long it takes for teams to start complaining if another northern New England team comes in and runs the show.
