Re: Cars

Raises hand.

I learned on a manual and drove manuals, cars and tractors, for years. Now with bad knees and an arthritic ankle, I'm sure I'd struggle with them. I went auto though due to spending a lot of time in city traffic, it just got to be too much work for too little gain to drive a manual in those conditions.

Wait, aren't you a goalie? that explains a lot. ;)

That, and I also think that our basic road/stop design isn't all that great for manual drivers. Many cities seem to like to make you stop every or every other light when downtown- not thinking that 1) it's a total waste of gas, and 2) it's generally bad for the local air quality. Any issues with driving a manual is very amplified in constant stop and go traffic that is totally intentionally that.

Re: Cars

No, but it does explain why I don't even try to skate anymore, mostly due to the ankle now.

Ah, I was thinking of a different person. Sorry about that. Apparently I'm as bad with poster names as I am with real names.

(and good news for people like yourself, autos are getting better. Not as much fun to drive as manuals, but major steps forward in the last decade)

Re: Cars

I'm passively looking at buying a car right now and it's very very tough to find a car I like with a manual transmission. A lot of people though ask me to teach them how to drive stick all the time, interestingly enough.

Re: Cars

Speedway owns Super America.

Not true since 2011.

SuperAmerica was under the same corporate umbrella as Speedway following the Marathon-Ashland merger (pre-merger, Speedway was Marathon's retail outlet while SuperAmerica was Ashland's). However, SuperAmerica was spun off into an independent company in 2011, while Speedway remains a wholly owned subsidiary of Marathon.

(Since Marathon owns and operates Speedway, I would assume that the gas dispensed there is identical to the gas dispensed at Marathon-branded retail outlets.)

Re: Cars

I try to go to Marathon when I'm around home. The farmer's co-op I belong to uses Marathon, and I try to go to their stations, as I get a 10% dividend check on all fuel purchases.

Re: Cars

Being a car nut for a long time this is what I saw in order during a 30 minute time on a park bench in Plymouth Michigan, this evening eating an ice cream cone and chatting. It's real good living in Detroit at times.
2 Dodge Viper convertibles, 1 Lambo Muircelago, 1 63 Corvette convertible- fully restored, 1 66 Corvette convertible also fully restored, 1 32 Ford (deuce) convertible with the top up- 1 box stock 36 chevy sedan. And the Woodward Dream Cruise is still a week away.

Re: Cars

Anyone have a set of Bridgestone Turanza Serenity (or Serenity Plus) tires on their car? Or do you have a set of tires you really like?

Re: Cars

Tires? I had a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers before, that I loved. Right now, from factory, I have some BF Goodrich pieces of ****, that have sidewalls that are cracking. Because of that, I'll be getting new ones soon, I'm thinking something in the 285x70xR17 range. Maybe Nitto's again, but I really like the BFG AT KO's or then maybe if I get crazy, Dick Cepek Radial F-C II's.

edit: nevermind, the Dick Cepeks are only load range D, definitely not gonna work. I may have to go down to 265's to get E's

Re: Cars

Firestone Destination AT's, 265/75/R16. Decently priced and highly rated on Tirerack, though I've heard some complaints about the tread life (don't log a lot of miles, so it doesn't affect me as much.)

They've performed pretty well even without studs on ice. Great in snow.

Wanted BFGoodrich TA/KOs, but they're expensive and probably too knobby for ice.

Re: Cars

I probably should have clarified, the tires are going on a Mustang. Should probably be all-seasons. I do plan on getting a set of snow tires this winter (I already have an extra set of wheels.)

The BFG's are always expensive, and though I want them, whenever I buy tires I end up going with something cheaper. After some looking, the Yokohama Geolanders are cheap as hell, and look like they have decent tread. I'll have to do some research on them. I really want 285's, but then my truck won't fit in the garage, if I go with 265's it should still fit....combine that with the fact that I have 3:23's and I probably should go with the smaller tires. :(

Re: Cars

Just put the Firestone Destination ATs on a Wrangler. 275/70/17 but seriously thought about 285/70/17 in several brands...Dick Cepek FCII, Mickey Thomson Baja ATZ or STZ, Nitto Trail Grappler, Cooper Discoverer AT3, Falken Wildpeak AT. Didn't really want to add the weight of the bigger tires which all would have fit no problem. Firestones have good road manners and are quieter than others with a slightly less aggressive tread. Highly rated All Terrain tire for on road use. I'd probably go with the Coopers or Falkens next time around though...probably a little better in off road use.

For my former souped up Mustangs I liked BFGs or Dunlops (SP9000)...they were strictly ultra high performance and summer only. Downright snaky on wet pavement.

Re: Cars

I have a set of Pirelli Scorpion Zero Assimetrico that came stock on my car, like them so far and haven't had any issue in some snow, then again I have AWD so I'm sure that helps a bit.

Re: Cars

I will say, I would avoid Bridgestone Potenza G019 Grids like the plague. Worst tire I have ever owned. They are so loud, I'm somewhat embarrassed to have people ride in the car. Amazing tire for the first 5,000-10,000 miles, but then they went to hell.

Re: Cars

Haven't really paid attention to the tire stuff since I've backed off autocrossing a lot over the last few years.

But, one suggestion- IF you are going to get real snow tires, all seasons are not really needed for the summer. Even in massive downpours, good summer tires will not have any problems as far as I can tell. I've even run dedicated racing tires in the rain- at highway speeds- not a big problem unless I hit a standing puddle.

If you don't want to spend the money/space on snow tires, I fully understand getting the most up to date all seasons- they are pretty amazing.

Tires wise- I've been happy with Kuhmos, Yokahamas, and Pirrellis. Just not at the sizes that you would put on your Mustang (all my cars are 14" or 15").

Re: Cars

Manual transmissions make up only 6.5% of new car sales in the United States.

bb_dl might be interested in this campaign, though for Save the Manuals! (link taken from within the other article)
From my automatic '67 Dodge Coronet convertible (sigh....gimme a moment) to my current '08 Altima (auto-stick), I've had 6 manuals (3 Datsun/Nissans, 1 VW, 2 Subaru). Looking forward to my retirement car in a few years (a nice little Miata, a Z3 or maybe I could find/afford an S2000 by then).

If you want a good commercial quality E rated tire look at the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac. It's an awesome on/off road tire and is surprisingly quiet for having such an aggressive tread pattern. I have 285/75-16's on my stock 97 Chevy K2500 that I use for snow plowing and I love them. Bought them from TireRack... I may never buy another tire locally again.
