Re: Cars

West Coast people, fill your tanks ASAP.

Refinery went fwoosh in Richmond, CA, might be down for weeks or months.

Re: Cars

Gotcha.

I learned to drive a manual in a Mazda... a GLC, I think it was. My first car was an '82 Subaru GL Wagon, and my current car is a '98 Honda Civic, both manual transmissions. I've also driven my dad's mid-late-'00's Accord. I think the first three all have reasonably forgiving clutches. The Accord is a little touchy, but it seems like part of that is the throttle response (bit of a delay makes it tricky to feather the throttle) and part of it is me adjusting to a different disengagement point (which also gets me in reverse when I go back to my car).

We've raced an '88 Mustang, but we're doing almost all of our shifts between 3rd and 4th, we only hit 1st and 2nd when we're going out and coming back in and we only hit fifth when the track has a big enough straight to clear 90 mph. I believe that clutch has a significantly later disengagement point than the Civic, but I haven't observed much difference in response once it starts to disengage.

Re: Cars

Never driven a manual. Familiar with the concepts, just never actually driven or owned one. Would love to learn, and actually was considering a manual Wrangler when I was looking, but don't want to destroy someone's transmission learning.

Friend suggested I buy a beater on Craigslist, practice in a parking lot, then sell it, but I don't have room for that.

Was there a refinery incident last week, too?

I just moved to IN, and the local price of gas went from 3.32 to 3.95 overnight. My first thought was, ****, I guess it's on in Syria. But no. No reason at all, that I can tell. Just your ordinary one-day 20% increase...

There was a pipeline that burst in Wisconsin that caused a spike in prices in the midwest.

Yes a refinery went down last week, but that one (forget which now) services the Midwest. We're around $3.85 a gallon here after being around $3.40 before the problem.

Re: Cars

I think what he meant by easy was a light push force. For instance a civic has a light clutch vs an older vette which requires a lot more force to push. I've driven a lot of clutch cars, both high and low performance and I like for them to have an inch or two of free play before they start to engage. The Honda's i've had all start to engage immediately, which I wish they wouldn't do.

As far as knowing, I totally agree it's a nice skill to have. I taught my kids on a vintage performance car but eventually got to the point of giving them a vehicle and saying go drive around for a few days. pretty amusing at times. Now days my truck is an automatic as I tow big loads. And what about people with bad knees, or arthritis, they can't drive clutches well either.

Those midwest states are Speedway states. Speedway is infamous for trickling down the price 3-4 cents a day for a week, then spiking it 30 cents all at once, and everyone else follows suit. Most commonly the spike happens on a Wednesday. If you see a Speedway with a jacked-up price, better hurry and fill up somewhere.

Speedway? I don't think I've ever seen a Speedway.

Yep. Thankfully I decided to chance it at $3.65 by my place. Today it's $3.85.

They're run by Marathon. I'd say half the stations in my town are either Marathon or Speedway. I go to the "real" Marathons, just because they use an STP-branded additive/detergent . I don't know how much that stuff actually helps, but I've always used branded gas (for that reason) and it's just a habit.

If you're actually in the market for one a dealership should let you take one to a parking lot and practice. We were getting my wife a new car and the only one that had the features she wanted was a manual, the dealership let us take it to a parking lot for a couple hours (before we made any commitment to buy) so she could get comfortable with it. Take someone with you that can drive one and give you tips, and it really shouldn't take that long to learn. It's one of those things that once you "get it", it is super easy, but can take a little while to "get it."

Raises hand.

I learned on a manual and drove manuals, cars and tractors, for years. Now with bad knees and an arthritic ankle, I'm sure I'd struggle with them. I went auto though due to spending a lot of time in city traffic, it just got to be too much work for too little gain to drive a manual in those conditions.
