Re: Cars

If you want a good commercial quality E rated tire look at the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac. It's an awesome on/off road tire and is surprisingly quiet for having such an aggressive tread pattern. I have 285/75-16's on my stock 97 Chevy K2500 that I use for snow plowing and I love them. Bought them from TireRack... I may never buy another tire locally again.
I'll have to check them out.

I check on tirerack, and the last time I bought tires, which was about 7 years ago that's where I bought them. Looking around this time, I think I prefer discounttire.com.

I use Discount Tire. They opened a location in Apple Valley about a year ago now, making them very convenient. Add to that they have the lifetime balance and rotate package, and they make life very easy.

Re: Cars

Haven't really paid attention to the tire stuff since I've backed off autocrossing a lot over the last few years.

But, one suggestion- IF you are going to get real snow tires, all seasons are not really needed for the summer. Even in massive downpours, good summer tires will not have any problems as far as I can tell. I've even run dedicated racing tires in the rain- at highway speeds- not a big problem unless I hit a standing puddle.

If you don't want to spend the money/space on snow tires, I fully understand getting the most up to date all seasons- they are pretty amazing.

Tires wise- I've been happy with Kuhmos, Yokahamas, and Pirrellis. Just not at the sizes that you would put on your Mustang (all my cars are 14" or 15").

True, however, I want to be able to run the all-seasons as late as possible in the fall before switching to the winter tires and switch back as early as possible in the spring to stretch them out since winter tires tend to be more expensive and wear out quicker. But I did think about doing what you suggested and buy summer tires and winter tires. Tempting but it's not like I need UHP tires since I'm not doing high speed cornering or anything. ;)

Discount has treated my family really well over the years. They stripped my brothers lugs once and the few times we went in after that, they actually recognized the name and comped a few tire repairs which would have normally run $30-$60.

Re: Cars

I like Discount but be sure to price-shop first. My wife's Nissan requires a very obscure tire and we saved nearly $200 by not going with them when replacing all 4 including install and guarantee, but I've already priced out my car (I'm a ways away from needing them) and Discount as of now will beat them all.

Thanks for reminding me, I need to go back for a rotation again.

Re: Cars

Tires can still be bought locally?? I been a regular TireRack buyer for the past 13-15 years.

I can remember Tire Rack ads in the back of Road & Track when I was a young petrol head.

I've been through the facility in South Bend. Picture the final scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark, only with tires and wheels.

Likewise on Discount - once you buy tires from them, you really don't have to pay for much else besides the next set.

I have a set of Michelin tires on my Jeep Cherokee (had the same type on the last Cherokee too), and they've always been good to me. If I were really deep in snow country like the UP again or Colorado mountains, I'd look at Nokians pretty hard.

I've been to them, and good service.

Re: Cars

That is pretty sweet. I can only imagine how awesome it will look when you're done.

My project is still on hold, since I'm spending my money on my house now.
It is still in the plans, though. I just need to acquire a new transmission, and then get about grand for extra spending money, and I can work on it.

For those who don't know, my project is to drop a Cummins 4B into my '89 Jeep.

The sti as a concept in 2011 I think. Cool car. Get rid of the wing for my tastes and give me a little more subtle Gurney Flap type spoiler akin to the current Shelby Mustangs...and HP well north of 400.*

*Gotta keep pace with the Bow Tie Cam ZL1 ya know. :)

Re: Cars

So its a cross between a Subaru and a Scion? I see know good reason to buy that basterd child.

It's a joint Subaru-Toyota project. For marketing reasons, Toyota has chosen to brand it as a Scion in the U.S., but it's sold as a Toyota elsewhere.
