Re: Cars

Here's what irritates me about that. Over $2 million worth of cars. 13 cars. Holy Crap! I like cars, but it's hard to imagine that even being rich enough not to care would make me pay over $150,000 for a car.

I hear you. I bought a 69 GTO 400ci-4BBL right around the time the oil embargo hit in the late 70's. Bad timing to be sure. :(

Sure wish that I'd held on to that car.

Re: Cars

I had 2 points really driven home for me yesterday while driving a rental car across Wisconsin on my way home from a business trip.

#1: I will never buy a car that is intended for more than fun/hobby (leaving the possibility of buying a muscle car or C2/C3 'vette). Holy **** was that uncomfortable. I don't like sitting in a car with my knees hitting the steering wheel. This was with the seat all the way back. Even if it was close to big enough, when I put the seat back all it does it straighten out my legs, so its like I'm sitting on the floor with my legs directly in front of me. How do they think this is comfortable? Then trying to get out of the thing is **** near impossible, because my work boot doesn't fit between the seat and the door. The pedals are too close together so I can barely fit my boot in to hit the accelerator without hitting the brake. I'm sorry, but every time I have rent one of those POS's, I am convinced more and more that I will never buy anything but a truck.

#2: I will never buy Toyota anything. Ergonomics suck in those things. Nothing was where it was supposed to be. Plus it didn't ride that great and had no gettup.

Re: Cars

Bah! I'm driving home from hockey, and my Service Engine Soon light comes on. I just had the fill neck replaced yesterday - connects the fueling port to the gas tank. It rusted through, was leaking every time I filled my tank, and it caused the smell of gasoline to fill my garage. I wanted to take a look to find the leak myself, but all the DIY guides state flatly to take in the vehicle any time you're working with the gas tank. I don't know enough about cars to feel comfortable without some instructions. Sucks.

I swear that as soon as you give one part of the car some attention, something else immediately requires a look. I'll have to take my car over to a parts store, see if they have a code reader so I know what the problem is.

Could be related to the recent repair, possibly a fuel vapor leak or fill tube vent issue and possibly just an installation tweak. Just a guess but fuel system vapor leaks or venting problem will set the light off. Same as a loose / leaking filler cap which don't always seal properly with new filler tube.

I stopped off at the O'Riley's, and hooked up the scanner. The evap emissions sensor was triggered after the fix. I reset it with the machine and the sensor has not gone off again. If it stays off, I'll just assume it was some stuff from the smoke test hitting the sensor during my first tank of gas after the fix.

Re: Cars

Think I screwed up the sensor to my anti-lock brakes last night. was traveling down a dirt road and it felt like a rock kicked up and hit the underside of the car. right after that, had about 4 different warning lights turn on for my car. Breaks, Anti-lock brakes, the traction control system light, and then not the service engine soon light, but one that was just the car with a wrench in it. Brakes felt fine, and I had my brother take a look at the car and he didn't really see anything mechanically wrong with it, so I'm hoping its just the sensor thats out of whack.

I like cars too. But I wont lie. If I had the money (and I could find one for sale...) I would totally buy this:

The $1.4 million Aston Martin One-77.

Re: Cars

Have I mentioned I heart my Wrangler? We're getting 8 to 12 inches of snow today. Most fun snow car I've ever owned. PERIOD.

Anyone have any experience with the new Chrysler V6 (the Pentastar?) They've started putting them in Wranglers, and I'm thinking about upgrading to a 2013 Rubicon in a year or two to get it.

Either that or hang on to my 2010 Sport, take it over to the local performance shop after the warranty's up, hand them a check, and say "Go ape shiat. I don't want to recognize this thing when you're done."

Why not both? Sorta like having your cake and eating it too! ;)

Leaning toward keeping the '10 at the present.

The ultimate option for the '10 would be to swap in a 3.9 Cummins turbo diesel. It's the same engine found in the Doritos delivery trucks, and it fits great in a Jeep. A hair under 200 HP, FOUR HUNDRED lb ft of delicious low-end torque, and 28 MPG.

And since it's a diesel, you could nearly hook it directly up to the Alaska Pipeline. :D

Quit stealing my plans. My B3.9 is sitting in the shed at home, brand new, never run.

Re: Cars

I suppose I'll look into buying a new Jeep....in a decade minimum. Just topped 86K this past weekend (it's a '99).

Hit 213k with my '96 Cherokee (4.0L/5 speed stick.) It helped that it was in the same family the entire time, and my dad and I knew exactly what maintenance had been done. Original clutch, original drivetrain, third set of tires.

And then we donated it.

As far as I know, she's still on the road - I wouldn't be surprised if she turned over 300k before the floorpan rusted out, and the powertrain could probably go even longer. Still kinda wish I'd had the time or energy to convert her into a RallyTruck with roll cage and all, but such is life.

Currently have an '01 Cherokee (4.0L/auto) with 150k miles, and I expect the same of this one.

Re: Cars

Amateur hour.

I have 307K on a '98 Chevy Caviler. It's on its second alternator, second starter, and I replaced the head light lenses/fixtures about five years ago because one was cracked. The rest of the car is original, including the clutch despite living in Duluth for five years. Naturally the wear parts like brakes, tires, head lights, etc. have been replaced. Still gets mid 30s for MPG.

Re: Cars

Has anybody here went and put coilovers on your ride? Considering getting a set for my ride, as I can't go and upgrade the other things I currently have on my upgrade list until later this year probably. Eventually I'll be redoing the exhaust (including the downpipe) to probably 3 inches, bigger intercooler, then putting in a bigger turbo and redoing the computer chip I've already put in. Should end up putting me around 350 ponies and 380 torque.

What's the goal with going specifically with coil over's vs a very good set of springs and a very good set of shocks?

And what do you intend to do with the car? If you are just going for looks- well, any cheap coil over will look like coil overs. If you are going on street driving, then the benefit of the change is pretty questionable. Autocrossing/track days- if you do it a lot, and want to win, a very good set of coil overs could be the way to go, especially if significant weight is lost.

It all depends on what the intention and goals are.

Finally got back into a Wrangler after missing my 1994 for years after parting with it. Bought a 2012 Wrangler Sport S to replace a 2006 Chrysler Crossfire Roadster I could no longer drive comfortably for more than an hour at a time. I can't believe the advancement / improvement to interior features and appointments compared to the '94 model. It's like a pure luxury car in comparison...and 1000 times more comfortable than the low riding roadster and that many times easier getting into and out of too. I'll be keeping this one for a long time.

Well, part of the reason is to lower it an inch or two. Another part is I've read on a VW enthusiast site that coilovers just increase the overall comfort of the ride, and obviously enhance the cornering ability. Currently not planning on track days, since there isn't really a track nearby me, but pending my soon to happen move to Florida, it could certainly end up happening in the future.

How is the Pentastar V6 in those? I'm tempted to trade up for it, but probably won't for quite a while yet.
