Re: Cars

How is the Pentastar V6 in those? I'm tempted to trade up for it, but probably won't for quite a while yet.
Only got a couple hundred miles on it so far and needs more break in, but it seems to have good power and low end torque. It's smooth and gets up and goes pretty well. A bunch more horsepower than any previous engine in the Wranglers, excepting the old AMC V8s of long ago, but torque is where it's at for typical driving. There are conversion kits for Chrysler Hemi installs. :) I won't be doing that. Probably a cold air kit and exhaust to help out at some point though. I was a big fan of the old 4.0 inline six. A good power plant I thought. One option I didn't get but wish I had is the upgrade 3.73 rear end, for quicker acceleration. Cost you a little MPG though.

Re: Cars

Got my '99 Passat up to 218K; donated it to Habitat for Humanity. Now driving an '08 Altima (mature transportation, aka boring),the 1st automatic I've had since my '67 Coronet convertible (boy, wish I still had THAT!) Favorite was my '75 Datsun (not Nissan) 280Z 2+2. Baby blue with some nice slotted rims.

Re: Cars

Currently not planning on track days, since there isn't really a track nearby me
Where do you live? You might be surprised, there seem to be tracks everywhere.

(Also, I'm a little curious about how putting coilovers would improve overall ride comfort. I'd expect it to stiffen the suspension, and I'd expect that to make for better handling but a less comfortable ride.)

That's exactly what I was thinking. The only way coilovers can really improve comfort is if the springs are same/softer and the shocks give better control. Other than that, they'll end up siffer and less comfortable. It's really hard to get a car to handle better, in particular flatter, with springs/shocks and have it ride better. I've never once seen that happen.

hockeyplayer- if you can deal with that, make sure you get well known parts- they tend to be very good quality, and you will get your money's worth.

Re: Cars

You know that the company was always Nissan (that is, since before they sold in the U.S.), and Datsun was just a marque they adopted in the U.S., right?
Didn't realize that, thanks. So, I've had 3 Nissans; the aforementioned 280Z, a Maxima SC, and a Sentra SE-R (a very fun little car!)

Re: Cars

My current foreign car crush to annoy bb_dl: Lancia Stratos.

One of those would be fun up here.

Re: Cars

How about a V-12?

And the Stratos has a V-8.
I don't like V-12's. The only reason I accept V-10's is the Viper. And I've never heard of that car, so I wouldn't know what kind of engine it has. Me liking a car and it having a V-8 are not mutually exclusive.

Re: Cars

I'm thinking about getting a new car in a few months. Something fun to drive and decent on gas mileage. My jeep is pretty bad, doesn't have cruise control, and gets a little tough to drive on a windy day. Not really sure what I want but financing options are really enticing right now so I may have to up my timetable.

Mini Cooper. Good on gas, a hoot to drive, unique, customizable, and they hold their resale value like gangbusters (they're neck-and-neck with the Jeep Wrangler for best resale value.)

I see you're in New England...if you want AWD, can't go wrong with a Subaru. Try an Outback, Legacy, or Impreza.

I don't know if I could get away with driving a Mini. I am considering a Subaru but I've driven a few and I haven't been all that impressed.

Re: Cars

Big question is do you want CUV/SUV or a more typical car. Also, how much are you willing to spend? Otherwise, I can recommend a range rover for you, I've heard good things. Maybe a Bentley?

Bugatti Veyron. You wanted fun to drive? You got it!

As for fuel economy, you'll burn through the gas tank in 12 minutes, but that's okay because the tires are worn bald after 10!

There's a Chevy SUV that gets 32 MPG, but I forget the model name.

You could try the Mazda 3/Ford Focus. They get 40 MPG and I know the older Mazda 3 models were fun to drive. I have a buddy who just bought one last year and thinks it drives and handles just as well as his 2000 BMW 3 series that he traded in. It's not as quick, but still a fun driver.
