Cars: 2015

Re: Cars: 2015

Much like Hyundai, they've come a LONG way from those little shiatbuckets they made in the late 90's/early 00's. (Hyundai actually owns a controlling stake in Kia.)

This is very true, but even my brother (mechanic for Hyundai) is starting to shun anything but the Genesis. He thinks the company is taking a step backwards.

Crossposted from tLodge, the deets on my new purchase:

2019 Mazda MX-5
Machine Grey
RF (Retractable Fastback power hard top, adds 100 pounds *grumbles in weight weenie* but looks slick as hell, reminds me of a Nissan 280Z almost)
6-speed manual (my exact quote to the sales guy: if you sell me this car in an automatic I'll have to kill us both)
Grand Touring trim level (the top trim level, auburn leather seats/interior trim, heated seats, heated pretty much everything else, beefed up sound system with speakers in the headrests, navigation, I think XM radio, all sorts of electronic nannies that throw a fit if you speed or step out of your lane or try to merge into another car or tape a baseball game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball.)
GTS package (adds back the Bilstein shocks/limited slip/better dampers/etc. off the Club trim level - pretty much the only missing options are the Brembo brakes and the Recaro race buckets, but since I'm probably not going to see a racetrack in this that's actually probably a good thing)

Stickered at $35500, got it for $33500 plus taxes out the door, and Mazda threw in a $750 rebate for trading in my NB. Sure as heck could have done worse. Honestly, probably better for me than dropping mid-$40K range on a Stinger GT.

I like the look of the WRX (sans tailfin, which is just tacky), but what's your maintenance like? How far do you have to drive to find someone who will work on it?

We have a few Subaru dealerships in the area, so not a big deal to get them serviced for maintenance or repair.

Subaru has gone to using a timing chain rather than belt, so that helps keep costs down. The oil changes get expensive since they’ve started using almost all 0-w## synthetic oil for their 4 cylinder engines.

The WRX is highly tuned, so I’m sure the costs are more for most things when compared against my Crosstrek.

Subarus are disproportionately popular around here (Mount Desert Island, Maine) and it’s the closest dealership to my house (15 minutes away).

They’re pretty inexpensive but the interior is inferior to a Toyota (it’s not even close). We did buy a 2016 Forester for my wife, and it’s had one problem outside of routine maintenance which was an easy and cheap fix but hard to diagnose (took them a couple days on it’s second trip to the garage to figure it out).

Not sure I would buy another one. Replacement will probably be a Toyota Highlander, Rav4, or a Tesla Model Y. (I usually keep a car I buy brand new for 10 years, but this thing has already been rear ended twice — one time hard enough to push it into the truck stopped in front of us and cause 15K in damages.)

Nice upgrade!

I just can't do it, and am in the process of "restoring" my '99 NB. Not a restoration like I would do to my Alfa, but one that will make the car usable every day for another 20 years. The car has been amazing for me, and I'm the only owner.

Re: Cars: 2015

So it seems we're still on this thread after 4 years.

I've had my 2012 Ford Fusion for 7 years this July. Looking for something new (or new to me - lightly used would be fine). I'm not an SUV or truck guy, probably looking at another sedan. I don't think convertibles and/or RWD work well in my current climate.
Still loving my 2016 Mazda 6 Touring. I'm over 80K miles (I have an awful commute), and have not had any issues. It has been fine in the snow, very good gas mileage, and I still think it is a great looking car (crystal blue with parchment interior). Lot's of options (including V-6) for 2019.

Let me tell you, you really feel that horsepower increase in the '19. 3rd gear above 3 grand it starts getting downright naughty. Can't wait until I've run it in some more and can really start wringing it out.

Had a pipe dream about handing my NB and a check to our good friend Keith and telling him to have a ball, but it was starting to show its age with small things going wrong here and there and the '19 NDs are such an improvement that buying new was worth doing.

My problem with the ND is that I just can't deal with the screen. Not what so ever.

(and I'm not all that happy with the rear design when seen in person.)

I plan on sourcing a lot of parts from FM for my work... :)

Re: Cars: 2015

I bought a 2015 Civic this weekend with just 10k miles on it. Not sure how that's possible but Carfax didn't flag it as a rollback risk. We traded in our 2010 Altima. It had barely 200k on it but it had entered the part of the O&M tail where you sink more and more in to preserve less and less value.

Re: Cars: 2015

Took the new toy up to Squaw Pass this Saturday.

World of difference from the NB. Again, no one's ever going to call the MX-5 a world beater, but it's well within the realm of "respectably quick" now. 3rd gear pulls above 3 grand are an eye opener. And the handling is silky smooth with the Bilsteins/shock tower brace/limited slip on the GTS package.

And all that's at anywhere from 6K-10K feet. Can't imagine what this thing can do at sea level.

Re: Cars: 2015

Glad you're enjoying your new car. For those of us who are less "acronym savvy", what does "NB" stand for?

Generations of the Miata are referred to by the designation NX (which actually appears in the VIN as well.) NA = 1st generation, NB = 2nd generation, etc.

Currently rocking an ND.

And NA/First gen Miata 89-97, NB/Second gen- 99-05, NC/Third Gen- 06-15, and ND/fourth gen 16-now.

It's one of those cars that even a 30 old version of is still a fun car to have and use all the time.

Re: Cars: 2015

Today was a great day to be a car guy. I'm in Bologna, Italy on vacation and what happens, tonight is the end of stage three of the 2019 Mille Miglia. They close the main streets in downtown Bologna, all the cars get a police escort into town and tens of thousands of fans line the streets to watch them come in and there is a parade afterwards. What an experience!

Re: Cars: 2015

Daughter and bf visiting a few days and driving a rented Tesla Model 3. Funny how being all electric brings changes you don't anticipate. It has a smooth but definitely minimalist look. Front looks different with no grill. Inside has nice lines but nothing on the dash except the screen. No buttons, vents, dials. Nothing. Self driving seemed to work well, including stopping at lights in traffic. It doesn't coast, though. Take your foot off the accelerator and it's almost like putting it on a break. They had no problem finding charging stations here in rural Wisconsin. They laughed about driving through an Amish community and a young, non-Amish guy looking at the car and flashing them the peace sign.

Re: Cars: 2015

Yeah, it’s like programmers have never heard of the concept of coasting. It’s either gun it or or slam on the breaks.

Acura does the same thing. It’s a useless feature unless you’re driving through middle America. Any amount of traffic makes adaptive cruise almost useless. And infuriating.
