Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Rather than have comments from the six games (three for the U18s and three for the U22s) going to the two separate threads for the two countries, I thought it made sense to set up this new thread to cover all six games.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like either series is going to have any audio or video feeds. That's unfortunate. But it does look like there will be live stats available for all six games.

USA Hockey is providing live stats for the U18 matches in Lake Placid. The main page with the links to all three games is at here. The first game is at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT today (Wednesday, 8/18), and here's the direct link to live stats for that match.

It is believed that Hockey Canada will be providing live stats for the U22 matches in Toronto as well. The main page for that three-game series is linked here. Links to the individual game stats should be posted there. The first game is at 8:15 p.m. ET/7:15 p.m. CT today (Wednesday, 8/18).

U18s - After one period, it's Canada 1, USA 1.

Ann-Renee Desbiens in net for the Canadians, and Megan Miller for the Americans.

U18s -- End of the 2nd period with the score USA 3, Canada 1.

USA's Haley Skarupa scores 2 second-period goals in a 43-second span, the first one being unassisted (and I believe on the power play -- we'll wait until the final box score to confirm that), to give the US the 2-goal advantage. Layla Marvin gets credited with an assist on the first goal.

Personal note... sorry for all the re-edits to my posts. I'm struggling this afternoon. As far as the shot totals go, I'm taking them off my posts until after the game because they keep flipping back and forth in the box score and aren't consistent.

Also, a few players have different numbers today for the game than they did on the camp roster, so that has added to my confusion. I'll work to do better.

Layla Marvin adds a goal of her own in the third period, giving the US the 4-1 victory in the first game of the U18 Series. Assist on the final goal to Karley Sylvester.

After all was said and done, it was the USA with the shot advantage. Shots were even in the third period, but the game totals favored the Americans 42-18.

Regarding power play efficiency... All I can say is that all the goals are listed as even-strength, which would mean the US was 0-for-7 on the power play and Canada was 0-for-1. Posts on the USA National Festival Blog indicate that the "clock time" listed on the box score for goals and penalties was the time expired in the period, even though the order in which they were posted would imply that it was the time remaining.

Some quotes from the USA National Festival Blog...

Canada jumped to a 1-0 lead midway through the first, but Team USA tied the game in the final minute of the period.

Emily Pfalzer skated up the right boards, before slipping the puck to Karley Sylvester, who was streaking toward the net. Sylvester fired a shot that was blocked away, but Pfalzer crashed the net and poked the puck through the legs of Canada goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens.

(2nd period) After Haley Skarupa's and Layla Marvin's shots were blocked away, Skarupa retrieved her own rebound and fired a wrist shot into the back of the net to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead.

Just 43 seconds later, Skarupa notched her second goal of the game on a shot that beat Desbiens on the glove side, just under the crossbar of the top right corner.

Thanks. I just reloaded the USA Hockey version, and I can see that they're re-ordering the goals and penalties to get them in chronological order.

U22 Series, Game 1

After one period, it's still a 0-0 game. Canada is 0-for-2 on the power play, the US is 0-for-1.

Geneviève Lacasse is in net for the Canadians, and Alyssa Grogan for the Americans.

(U22s) Canada opens the scoring in a big way in the second period...

Laura Fortino got things rolling for the Canadians, scoring with an assist to Chelsea Karpenko at the 11:37 mark.

Then Karpenko picked up a second assist as Jillian Saulnier tallied at 16:13. Stefanie McKeough got the second assist on the goal.

Just over two minutes later, it was Natalie Spooner's turn as she netted an unassisted goal at 18:25. 3-0 Canada.

All three goals were at even-strength. The power play so far is 0-for-3 for the Canadians and 0-for-2 for the Americans.

(Edit) Shots have been pretty even, favoring Canada but only by a 20-19 margin through two periods.

The twins finally got the US squad on the board as Monique converts an assist from Jocelyne at 5:12 of the third period to cut Canada's lead to 3-1.

But it was Jessica Wong sealing the deal for the Canadians with assists from Brianne Jenner and Jennifer Wakefield at 17:11 of the period.

The game was pretty even through the first period, with the Americans having a slight edge until the last couple of minutes where the Canadians started to get on track. Their passing was atrocious before this time. After that, they slowly took over the game with mainly a power forward game, which caused problems in front of the American net. Both goalies were very good throughout the game. You couldn't fault the goalies on any of the goals.
I was very impressed with the back check on both sides, but the Canadian squad was relentless at this essential part of the game. Whenever the Americans got something set up, someone would come flying in out of nowhere and make the play. Both teams were great at the shot block, and are very good on the breakout, and in transition. The Americans like to cherry pick, which caused the Canadians some concern, but they adjusted well, and of course the back check was strong. The lone American goal was set up this way, but was inadvertently assisted by one of the Canadian players.
With a little bit of luck this game could have gone in a different direction for the Americans, as most of their good opportunities were either messed up, or closed up by the Canadian defense. The Americans looked very dangerous at times, but had trouble finishing things off. I look for them to be better tonight with a few adjustments. Consistently looking for the long bombs (especially one player in particular) hurt the Americans through the neutral zone. They are better when they try to spread the defense, and set up the triangle with their speed.

The first game of the U18 series saw the ice tilted in the US's favor for most of the game. It was apparent early that the girls on both sides were nervous, as passes were missed, shots were fanned on, and the puck slid under defender's sticks at the blueline. The Maple Leaf overcame the jitters first, but despite having the upper hand territorially they were unable to muster many shots.

The US squad finally got on track and started to move the puck with more authority, however halfway through the first Canadians got on the board with a nice rush by Gabrielle Davidson (Pointe-Claire, QC) that split the D. She cut across the crease from left to right and lifted a backhand over Megan Miller's (Long Grove, IL) glove and under the crossbar.

The US squad drew several penalties, and after being a tad out of sync with the first opportunities, looked better in subsequent chances on the PP. They were outshooting their counterparts, but with a lack of second shot situations, could not crack Ann-Renee Desbiens (La Malbaie, QC).

With less than 30 seconds left in the period defenseman Emily Pflazer (Getzville, NY) rushed the puck up the right wing boards and while covered managed to get off a wrister from outside the dot that squeeked through Desbiens. The Canadians then had a late flurry in the US end to no avail.

The second was heavily tilted in the US's favor, with Haley Skarupa (Rockville, MD) giving the US the lead when she dug out an Alex Carpenter (N. Reading, MA) rebound at the right post, pirouetted, and cutting back across the top of the crease reached a long backhand along the ice past Desbiens. Moments later she streaked down the left wing and snapped off a rocket that beat Desbiens over the glove, top shelf. The two quick strikes jacked up the Red, White, Blue, and they dominated the rest of the period.

The third was an even, back and forth affair, though the US picked up its fourth goal courtesy of Layla Marvin (Warroad, MN) midway through the period.

When will the US referee's wake up and finally come to the realization that this is the way the game is played.

The refs in the U22 game let them play. It was rough at times, but nothing stupid. During the rest of the week however, that wasn't the case. It was a parade to the penalty box during tryouts.

Ah, were you there? Thought not. When will Canadians realize the stick needs to stay on the ice? Probably one specious call (tripping). When the US team started skating, the penalties started. One was a blatant cross check across the back of a player as she reached for a rebound. Others were obvious interference and hooking.

Nope wasn't there. Didn't need to be. Same old story. Of course the Americans didn't committ any infractions...at least not in Lake Placid.

Put the whistles away and let them play the way the game was intended to be played. No more of this mamby pamby crap.

Grit is not a penalty.

Maybe just an oversight, or a weird coincidence, but I didn't hear any complaints after the U22 game (a Canadian win) when the refs called 12 penalties total, vs. only 8 in this one.

Same old mentality. Can't skate with them so you take penalties until the refs let more go. It's their equalizer.

There is no checking in women's/girls hockey. I don't mind the stand them up at the blue line or blocking in front of the net. But I hate the stick work hooking, cross checking, grabbing and running players.

The womens game is great and fast when played by the rules.
