Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

The problem isn't whether he failed to declare, it's that he's literally in bed with Goldman. "Outsider"? Yeah, right! He's done.

But that only makes him very much like every other politician. Will that actually cost him any credibility? I was hoping for imprisonment.

I think it will cost him all his remaining credibility, because his entire appeal is that the idea that he's so authentic that he doesn't care if he repels people.

He's so personally loathsome that even his political allies despise him, and his public appearances make people's skin crawl. But that was countered by the "tough medicine" shtick that conservatives swoon for: it's supposed to be a mark of pride that he's obnoxious, because he's not trying to pretend -- he's honest. You need him on that wall. All the silly stuff that adolescent boys think of as virtues, and which life experience teaches are just as cynical and manipulative as any other pose.

Cruz now has Hillary's problem -- he's implicated in the establishment's rape of the white middle class because he's just another Wall Street flunky. That destroys his whole appeal.

I think the GOP just became Trump v Rubio. Hopefully they'll pull a Montreal Screw Job on Trump and he'll be so miffed that he runs third party. And won't it be fun to watch down ticket candidates have to squirm on which one they're endorsing.

Hey Kep and Rover

If Hillary beats all the bad juju (emails, Benghazi etc.), do the Clintons get their own wing at the Kennedy Hall of Fame?

If Rubio gets elected I hope I can move to Mars cause the entire world is going to glow 15 minutes after he gets in.

Rubio is just another empty-headed corporate puppet like Dubya. Granted that was a nightmare for America, but all it means is BofA, Northrop and Walmart get nukes. They're not going to use them -- it's bad for business.

Not to mention that a three-way between the Tea Party, the RNC and the Dems is a 40+ state landslide for the Dem candidate.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

I like the sound of Paul Ryan kicking back against the Trump adoration. But will it do any good?
Trump’s con*ser*vat*ive pop*u*lism puts him cross*wise with Ry*an on sev*er*al spe*cif*ic policies—from trade and im*mig*ra*tion to con*strain*ing en*ti*tle*ment spend*ing for seni*ors (which Ry*an sup*ports and Trump op*poses). Their more fun*da*ment*al difference is that Trump is lead*ing the GOP to*ward a European-style ra*cial nationalism that re*lies primar*ily on mar*shal*ing griev*ances among ali*en*ated whites, while Ry*an says Re*pub*lic*ans must de*vise a prob*lem-solv*ing con*ser*vat*ism that can com*pete in all com*munit*ies.

*note: *that's od*d

Not the most ringing endorsement ever for "candidate I'd most like to have a beer with." Personality matters, which is why I still can't believe The Donald has a snowball's chance of actually getting elected. (I know you're talking about Cruz, but same diff)

The weird thing about Trump is among a subset of righties he's magnetic. I assume it's just sheer worship of money.

Rover calls him Calgary Ted. I call him Tailgunner Ted.

I HATE his campaign persona. But, I read a thing in SI from a guy that golfed a round with him (he apparently cheats as much as Slick Willie did on the course) and he claimed Trump's a genuinely nice guy in person. Not sure I believe it; and I would have no desire to ever meet him.

Is it safe to say that Reagan was a composite of Trump and Buckley.

Reagan had good will and good manners. Trump is a despicably self-serving, mean-spirited bully with no sense of propriety. Other than carefully sculpted hair, it's hard to see anything in common.

I'm not so sure.

I was talking with a woman I know who saw Trump speak a short while back down in Iowa. This gal is by no means a Trump supporter, or even a Republican. She's in her late 20's, a lawyer and a minority. She and her fiance happened to be in Iowa, where Trump was speaking, were offered an opportunity to tag along to the speech and did so out of curiosity.

She said that he actually gave a really great speech. He didn't say anything crazy. She said there were never any moments where people just looked at each other like "did he actually say that?" She said it was fairly funny. Her comment to me was that there is no way she would ever vote for this guy, but that he came across in person, in front of a large crowd, completely different than the impression you get listening to sound bites on tv, or in the debates.

The only desire to meet him would be for golf. I could easily whore myself out for 4.5hrs on any of these courses

mookie's golf circle has a venn diagram overlap with tD's where we share peeps. they really enjoy his company (in fact one was playing with him in fla just last week. great guy. also golfed his new course in the bronx last fall with another one. they place wasn't open but one phone call with a request had a guy from westchester drive down to open the gate for us.

very gregarious fellow. earns his loyalty. and yes, expects gimmees from 20ft :D

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

No, The Actor had zero Buckley in him. They were polar opposites. Reagan, on his best day, was a gifted orator and a convincing salesman, but he was not a thinker -- he was not a dummy either, he was "a first rate second rate mind" -- the kind of guy who excels in business, or politics, or... entertainment.

Buckley, OTOH, was a masterful thinker who could under the carefully controlled circumstances of his TV show shine with wit, but he had none of Reagan's ability to ad lib and weave a convincing narrative.

They were complementary figures with zero overlap.
