Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

No, The Actor had zero Buckley in him. They were polar opposites. Reagan, on his best day, was a gifted orator and a convincing salesman, but he was not a thinker -- he was not a dummy either, he was "a first rate second rate mind" -- the kind of guy who excels in business, or politics, or... entertainment.

Buckley, OTOH, was a masterful thinker who could under the carefully controlled circumstances of his TV show shine with wit, but he had none of Reagan's ability to ad lib and weave a convincing narrative.

They were complementary figures with zero overlap.

I don't know that I'll sell anyone and I'm not sure that I'm sold either. But I think there's some merit here.

If we're talking about what matters...its impact on its constituency. Why else do we care about any of these three? Reagan and Buckley both had kind of a mesmerizing influence due to use of delivery of concepts to contemporary conservatives...hence why they mattered. But Reagan was different in style. He used basic simple concepts and communication that appealed to his constituency. These straightforward communication style is IMO very similar to a clear thought level points that Trump brings. The three are definitely not the same person. But the hold of Reagan on conservatives had some similarity to Buckley in concept-based influence and Trump in style-based influence over conservatives.

Just an observation.

@dick_nixon: When pressed, Cruz reminds me of the preacher in "The Crucible" who cries "I am a graduate of Harvard College!" before he burns the witch.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

C'mon Jeb, Bill did just fine almost being impeached while in office, I'm sure Hillary can do some briefing and do alright.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

If Trump recites the actual common law based on Britain it would be incredible. But it looks like he's just gonna talk about polls.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

If Jeb was not a Bush, would he be the front runner? (Or a lot closer to it)

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

My god. These people on CNN right now in that theater are the dumbest effing hicks I have ever seen.

If Jebbers! wasn't a Bush, he'd be working at the car wash alongside his older brother.

These debates have become totally useless. At least on the Dem side, at first, there was some need to see Hillary vs Bernie but now that contest is set. You either want European style liberalism or Obama's 3rd term. You're trading off purity for maybe getting more things passed into law, and an unknown commodity on the national stage vs a tested one with some baggage. Having 1, 5 or 20 more debates isn't going to change that dynamic.

On the GOP side, its an insult war with zero substance. Who hugged Obama. Who donated to PP. Who doesn't think David Duke would have made an excellent Senator. Who cares? Yes it was interesting to watch Trump cream Calgary Ted on the New York values retort, but it adds nothing as to what you would want to know about a potential President. U-s-e-l-e-s-s. I blame the media who set these debates up like a steel cage match.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

So it sounds like the debate was Trump and Cruz trading zingers and Rubio jumping up and down in the back like the little brother you give a couple dollars to get lost.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

What I laugh about most is how if anybody else had delivered that 9/11 line - Jebbers!, Krispy Crème Christie, etc, it would have been the lead story on all the lamestream media coverage. Instead they've tried to bury it as an also-ran comment while playing UP the Cruz-Trump birther exchange. Trump body-slammed Calgary Ted, a man who's supposed to be The Smartest Guy In The Class. Anybody who doesn't still think Trump could go all the way is kidding themselves.

I have to assume you're making some kind of cruelly subversive joke/commentary. Donald Trump?

But here's why you should be losing some sleep. Once Trump wins the nomination, he's going to be Hil's worst nightmare. He'll go so far left of Hil it's going to make her head spin. He's going to be out there telling everyone he's building a wall and keeping the Muslim's out, while at the same time he'll be talking about how much more people are going to be paid in social security and how he's personally going to fire every cop who even looks twice at a black. Because he doesn't care. He doesn't have a platform or an agenda. He can, and will, say anything.

I assumed that what Rover meant when he predicted Trump to "go all the way" (that he'll be elected over Hillary). But I won't let myself believe it until I lose my last scrap of faith in humankind.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

A couple of points:

1) I meant Trump winning the nomination. Apologies for the confusion. Really we'd have to see how he's polling come convention time to assess his general election prospects.

2) I personally have faith in the electorate when they decide to show up to vote, which tends to be in Presidential election years. I've always said you get what you vote for. IF the majority want Trump, who am I to argue. ;) I don't see him being Hillary's worst nightmare simply because she's dealt with nonsensical GOP attacks before. I'd more worry about a Trump-Sanders matchup, where Sanders ala Mike Dukakis tries to take the high road all campaign while Trump along with a compliant lamestream media savages him at every turn. Hillary would have the most trouble with a George W Bush type - a guy who promises a sorta compassionate conservatism with a dose of militant national defense that could lull voters into thinking they're not electing another "cut taxes on the rich to zero" guy. Fortunately for her that candidate doesn't exist in this crowd.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

The weird thing about Trump is among a subset of righties he's magnetic. I assume it's just sheer worship of money.

There's something comforting to the conservative establishment about someone that awful that has failed as much as he has still being successful because of the massive advantages of his privilege.

Potentially could be Hil's worst nightmare. There are two things that may work against him. One is that he operates on the fly consistently. That works well for half the population...but if he steps in a verbal landmine (like he has time and again) that by half will shrink to his 25% core base. And he still has his unrelenting ego to deal with...which makes a change in strategy less likely. Guys like this are more likely to be against anything their opponent has to say than have the nuance to support the position or go beyond it.

Not that I'd ever vote for either of them, but in some mythical world where I had to choose between Trump and Cruz, I think I'd go with Trump. He's a performance artist but at least his goal (self promotion) is readily apparent.

Cruz reminds me of the politician from The Dead Zone that would kill his entire family to get ahead if he had to, and I really don't know what he'd actually do if he actually got the job. All the other GOP candidates I feel like I have a decent enough read on to know what I'd be getting if elected. Cruz puts on so many different fronts that other than being a complete *******, I can't get a read on him. And no way I'm choosing the mystery box for President.

Rubio's a bigger mystery box than Cruz.
