Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

so can we now please stop calling this folks 'conservative'?!?!?! they are not. not even close. that is a nonexistent species.

I'd call them "Americons." Pretty much all intellectually rigorous and honest conservatives have either been Brits (Burke, Coleridge, McIntyre, Oakeshott) or Brit wanna-bes (Adams, Eliot, Buckley, Kirk). American conservativism, in contrast, has always been characterized by its betrayal of basic conservative principles whenever expediency (i.e., the whim of their donor puppeteers) demands self-contradiction.

Cruz, Rubio and Huckabee are apt heirs to Father Coughlin, Joseph McCarthy, Jerry Falwell and Bob Dornan. American conservatism has been running on the fumes of the booboisie for a century or more.

Local boy Fr. Coughlin was his own brand of nutty - I wouldn't lump him in with Falwell or McCarthy. Despite being anti-communist, Coughlin stumped for nationalization, taxation/redistribution, and government seizure of private property where he felt it was appropriate. He was no friend of the unbridled capitalism preached by today's far-right. He was also an isolationist and an apologist for Hitler, whereas today's conservatives are constantly complaining that Obama is too chickensh*t to just carpet-bomb the entire Middle East into oblivion. Like many Catholics back then, Coughlin also hated Jews, and probably would oppose supporting Israel if he were live today.

Yes, please. And I understand that words change definition over time, but "conservative", root "conserve" ("don't serve", "preserve" or "save"), has a clear and well-established meaning in a number of applications, and the Republican Party is nowhere near that definition socially, fiscally, legally, religiously, environmentally, militarily, educationally, transportationally, agriculturally, or any-ly. They're the party of "let's blow up everything and see how high it burns! Yay!"

So they're the "Joker" party?

So, basically, Pat Buchanan.

He also was silenced by the Cathoic Church when he went over the top.

The antithesis was Blessed Bishop Fulton J. Sheen.

exactly.

conservatives are looking at the constitution AS WRITTEN
liberals look at it with eh, liberties :D.

repub 'leaders' today are nothing of that sort. they are selfish jingoist racist homophobes wrapped in a bible (imagine unwinding that from a 'separation of church and state' constitution :p). and if that's what you want to be that's fine. but don't usurp a title that doesn't tie to the definition proper.

a fiscal politician would be proposing a raise in taxes to pay down the debt. not cutting taxes to expand it while 'rebuilding' the military.

a pox on all of them. morons!

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

I'm on board with starting up a U.S. Conservative Party that conserves the good things and does not incorporate religion in governance.

While it's true that most of the Catholic hierarchy did not like Fr. Coughlin and wanted him silenced, he was supported by his superior Bishop Gallagher (until Gallagher's eventual passing). Meanwhile, the feds tried various methods of forcing him off the air, ultimately achieving success. The Church did not formally do much of anything until after Pearl Harbor, when FDR forced the issue because by then we were at war and though Coughlin had lost much of his popular support by then due to his isolationist views, his paper Social Justice was still a thorn in the side of the war effort.

So, basically, Pat Buchanan.

Sort of. St. Patrick of Buchananomics couldn't hold a candle to Fr. Coughlin in the charisma/public speaking department.

Good rant, Gomer!

I'm not sure if they still exist, but when I was a lad there was a Conservative party (at least in NY), but it was almost exclusively one issue (RTL) and so the opposite of what you want.

Conservatism without theocracy is what the Libertarians are supposed to be.

mookie misses bill buckley still to this day :(

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

So do I, man. So do I. It was nice to have a worthy opponent.

can still sit and recall fully when bill visited bu in 1987 to give a talk. that was when the 'issue du jour' was apartheid. there were people lined up to protest his being there and rant. bill spoke very clearly that it was our place to let them figure it out for themselves. i don't think any intelligent rationale american was "pro" apartheid. but everyone said SOMETHING had to be done.
imagine these so called 'conservatives' today trying to win 'hearts and minds' with that issue :D

funny how that whole issue was a democratic staple where money was the solution. now the republicans stole it but it involves boots on the ground and drones.

(interestin how bill was proven right. SA did figure it out on their own. mookie was also on the esplanade [actually on storrow drive as that was shut down] in the summer of 1990 to see mandela come after being released.)

an ideological issue is different from a social issue. communists were trying to take over countries. afrikaaners were not. a true conservative wouldn't push an issue that isn't threatening him directly. he would however move and shake in the background to try and impact issues to help keep things controllable.

dems are no better.

race baiting "do as i say, not as i do" blowhards who preach 'us against them' and continue to run modern-day plantations to solidify their power.

The law in all of its majesty prohibits the rich and poor alike from sleeping under bridges.

Class war is just as much a part of the GOP platform, and as Buffett acknowledges, the rich are winning.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

Conservatism without theocracy is what the Libertarians are supposed to be.

In my fantasy land of a country rid of the Republican Party, libertarianism/collectivism doesn't need to share an axis with conservative/liberal. For example, the most obvious argument for conserving... OK, that's fiscal policy, but the second most obvious argument is in conserving natural resources. Collective conservatism butts heads with the libertarian ideals of strip mining and unlimited grazing rights. Also on the federal budget, for that matter.
Also, there are liberal ideals like gay marriage and of course pot smoking that are inherently libertarian.
