You kidding? To me this is great news. I'm very surprised by it, but I spend so much time around the minarchist idiocracy it's probably skewing my perceptions.

In a related story, Libertarianism remains the leading political ideology for affluent white male college virgins, and Ringworld is still awesome*.

(* Ringworld is still awesome, even if 90% of the people who love it should be permanently relocated to Somalia.)

Reading Ringworld right now, so I'm getting a kick...

So far, it has had its moments but im not yet seeing why it's constantly bright up in various sci-fi must read lists.

Larry Niven's Ringworld?? I was much slimmer and less bald when I read that.

Here at Rover Nation we're a bit skeptical about offering Kepler membership into our cult, I mean organization. He's a bit of a Paulite but after his latest post his application might be looked at a little more favorably. ;)

I am not a freaking Paulite! Why do you think this?!

Ron's anti-militarism and anti-corporate cronyism are A Good Thing. Ron's social and domestic budgetary policy is the fever dream of a deranged millionaire.

And Rand, insofar as he is anything at all, is a snake.

I'd put it in my personal top 5 all-time*, but if you're more than halfway through I think we'll just have to agree to differ -- it doesn't become significantly better.

Note: this is also one of those books (cough, Dune), where you can do yourself a favor and not read the sequels, which suck donkey dong.

5. Dune, Herbert
4. Ringworld, Niven
3. The Dispossessed, Le Guin
2. Gateway, Pohl

Unbridgeable Gap

1. Foundation, Asimov

Children of Dune was pretty good.

Others I'd add
Lucifer's Hammer
Starship Troopers
Moon is a Harsh Mistress
John Carter series

The Dispossessed did nothing for me. I would, however, highly recommend The Left Hand of Darkness. (I also enjoyed the sequels to Ringworld, although Niven does occasionally invoke some annoyance with his retconning of stuff that wasn't sufficiently thought out in the original.)

I haven't read the Foundation books, but for me, there is a pretty large gap between Dan Simmons's Hyperion Cantos and everything else. I'm unusual in preferring Endymion and Rise of Endymion to Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion.

I'm quite the opposite, with LHoD doing nothing for me at all, but to be fair it is considered her classic book.

John Carter series

I've been looking for a way to get into E. R. Burroughs. Challenge accepted!

Last I looked Amazon had complete works of Burroughs (Tarzan &Carter + others) for free in Kindle.

Starship Troopers and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress are two of my favorites.

The movie of Starship Troopers was terrible. I've read they're making a remake more faithful to the book.

What happened to the theory that the movie of ST was an elaborate trolling? Was that just wishful thinking?

Speaking of awful movies, the first quarter of the book of Battlefield Earth is actually great.

Harsh Mistress is so amazingly uneven, not even counting RH's empty-headed polemics. His juveniles are so much better, and so great for their genre; he should have stuck to them.

ST was awful in a, "I can't take my eyes off this" sort of way.

The John Carter books are in the public domain in at least some parts of the world, and hence available for free online. That's how I read them.

Personally, I don't care for Carter himself that much, as he's a little too ridiculously overpowered. The books that come after that are set in the world but don't feature Carter (and sometimes don't even feature his relatives) are more interesting.

It's not an elaborate trolling attempt. It's a parody of old war reels.

http://www.thewire.com/politics/201...ecause-rick-perry-hasnt-paid-them-yet/379384/

The National Guard troops Texas Gov. Rick Perry ordered to the U.S. Mexico border last month are using food and gas aid from a local food bank because they haven't been paid in weeks, according to the KGBT. Members of the National Guard reach out for assistance for 50 troops who were deployed around August 11 visited the food banks, and members of the group told KGBT that they won't be paid until September 5.

Last month, Perry announced he was sending 1,000 National Guard troops to defend the border in the wake of inaction from the federal government. The move was met with skepticism, especially from border town sheriffs who wanted the resources to go towards police officers, since National Guard troops aren't allowed to arrest or detain undocumented immigrants. Others balked at the price — it will cost an estimated $12 million a month to sustain the troops, and as of last month the state wasn't sure how it would pay that price.

Now it seems that the troops arrived before the funds did. Democratic state Rep. Rene Olivera, who earlier condemned the "militarization" of the border, said "it's embarrassing that our troops have to stand in a food pantry line. This is the fault of the state."

Lets not mistake this fact: Obama is first Prez since Ike to win both elections with > 50% of the vote.
Only you did. "Mistake" it, that is.

Reagan 1980: 50.8% (in a race with a 3rd candidate whose name some people actually remember)
Reagan 1984: 58.8%

(sorry - been a little busy this week and just catching up)
