He might of won this time though. He's a different guy after the last 8 years.

Perception of him has changed a lot.

I believe he deferred to Hillary, believing it was her turn.

I still can't work through this in my mind. How on policy they could not be any different. Policy matters. People apparently don't believe policy comes from government.

The error you made is thinking the average person cares about policy. They dont. There is a reason shows like O'Reilly and Rush get huge ratings and Maddow doesnt. It isnt the slant, it is the stories. Policy doesnt move the needle...flashy graphics, controversy and scary stories do.

Bernie was a lot of bluster and ideas but no real policy. I love him but it is true. Hillary was all policy and no flash. Drumpf was closer to Bernie than Hillary in the eyes of the average voter.

It's not an absolute scale. It's a relative to the person you're standing next to scale. The only way Trump wins is who he was up against.

Point is, many conservative women don't see themselves or their daughters as ever needing BC from anyone other than their own doctor and would never envision needing/wanting an abortion.

The "social" stuff just doesn't resonate.

And living somewhere like Flint?

Uh, no. His son died far too young, he was still grieving, and he's been #2 in Washington for 8 years. His decision was to call it a career - it had nothing to do with Hillary or all those nefarious DNC/Clinton conspiracy theories.

I think it's reasonable to wonder if turnout would have been stronger with a different candidate.

Especially since it looks like turnout is what determined this outcome.

GREAT turnout by a motivated pro-Trump/ANTI CLINTON group and lackluster turnout by unmotivated/uninspired Dems.

I think the guy on CNN nailed it. This was white backlash against a black President who they felt abandoned them. This was a rural vs urban election and rural showed up and won. Trump promised Guns Money n' Freedom and that's exactly what they wanted to hear.

Hillary's coalition didn't crack. It failed to show up. She wasn't as compelling as Mr. Obama. --> Who shows up.

What we saw in this election is what I think will be an early move in a big realignment of the political parties.

One of the pundits last night said the Ds overestimated the status of their sun belt migration (gains in FL, NC, GA). They weren't as strong in the south yet as they will be but had lost a significant part of the rust belt (PA, OH, MI) already. That combination of losses but not full gains yet was the undoing. I find that believable.

If it's a real thing, you must plan for it and strategize to overcome it.

I could be wrong but I don't think he'll get mixed up in rubbish like that. He is much more pragmatic than people give him credit for and he doesn't hold a lot of the traditional republican social views.

You better hope so, the idea that people are dumb enough to vote for someone because they don't think he can get something this horrible done is telling.

No, the reason Hillary lost is even simpler and dovetails nicely with what MaizeRage just posted.

The voters were playing Celebrity Apprentice Presidential Election Edition. And the Chairman of the Board always wins on his reality show.

When you choose not to make an actual effort into understanding why the voters cast their ballots as they did, you're choosing to surrender future elections to the opposition.

Really? He campaigned on "women who get abortions should be punished" and nominating justices who would reverse Roe v Wade.

Of course he will get mixed up in it.
