Campaign 2016 Part XXIII: The Penultimate Thread

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXIII: The Penultimate Thread

Reading comprehension issues? Once again, as previously stated, not my party.

But I know that hyper partisans on both sides have a hard time understanding the independent voter.

Maybe you need to get involved, then. If you don't take part in the selection of candidates, then you have to deal with the people other choose for you. Suck it up.

Again, some of us think Hillary Clinton is a great candidate and will make a great President. Don't tell me I'm wrong, as I'm not telling you that you are wrong- they are just opinions.

If anything is broken- it's the nominating system. The fact that it started so very early with so many debates WAY before two tiny little states thinned the field to some rather odd choices- doesn't that say something is wrong? Why can't we have one nominating day for the entire country?

What's funny to me- based on historical models- term limits, economics, etc- the best predictors out there which are very reliable- this *should* have been a walkover for the Republicans. But thanks to Trump, the battle is a whole lot closer than history suggests. To the point that a normal Democrat loss, well, we will see Tuesday.

I can be honest- I didn't vote, as I would have been fine with Bernie or Hillary, but am more pleased that Hillary got the nod by the most voters.

As an un-enrolled voter in Massachusetts you can pick either the Republican ballot or the Democratic ballot in the primaries, so I pretty much always vote in the primaries.

I actually don't necessarily think Hillary will make a bad president, but I do think she is a bad candidate (as far as elect-ability purposes). Maybe people are misunderstanding that distinction that I am making. And I think I am right. Against Trump with all his baggage, this one should have been over long ago.

I also agree that I don't like the nominating system. It drags on for too long and often it seems the extremes of the parties end up having the loudest voice especially before the more moderate people start to get involved. I'd love a single nominating day in the country. I mean really, why should a couple of somewhat obscure states like Iowa and New Hampshire have so much say in who will potentially become the next president.

Without going through history and analyzing things, I think this should have been a walk in the park for the Democrats... outgoing president with pretty high favor-ability ratings, economy recovering etc etc.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

You can't chastise him for not being involved and then admit you didn't vote.

CNN covers the World Series

Don Lemon: With us to debate last night's game seven are Rahm Emanuel the mayor of Chicago and Jerry Springer, the former mayor of Cleveland.

Jerry Springer: Cincinnati, Don. I was the mayor of Cincinnati.

DL: Close enough.

Rahm Emanuel: Let me just say it's great to finally see the Cubs win the World Series.

JS: That's not what happened Rahm. Raji Davis hit a 3-run homer in the ninth to win it.

RE: It was only a 2-run homer, it was in the eighth inning and it tied the game. The Cubs won it in the tenth.

JS: No, Cleveland won last night to sweep to a World Championship. Terry Francona is now 24-0 in the World Series. Believe me.

RE: It was clear as day to anyone watching that the Cubs won. It was 8-7. They had a ceremony, presented the owner with the trophy -

JS: The trophy ceremony was rigged. I know much more about baseball than the commissioner and the so-called experts on Fox. Congratulations to Cleveland for a hard-won World Series title. Better luck next year to the Cubs.

DL: Fascinating discussion gentlemen, but we have to leave it there. Congratulations to both your cities.

And....scene.

Sure I can, I'm not butthurt about the selection of the Democratic Party. He's complaining that he has nobody to vote for, as all of his choices are terrible. Who's fault is that?

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXIII: The Penultimate Thread

At this point, whining about the choice of candidates is a cop out. We cant go back we have what we have. Vote for who is closest to what you believe. For me, as much as I dislike her that is Hillary. Hell there wasnt one Republican that was anywhere close let alone the Orange Fascist.

My guy was Bernie, long before it was fashionable to support Bernie. But Bernie would not have fared any better against Drumpf, and most likely much worse. To beat a wannabe Emperor you need someone that has a lot of experience going against ego driven men and understands them on a different level. Drumpf fights a guerrilla war so you need someone who has been trained to survive in the mud and fight in the brush. Yes she has baggage, no I am not a big fan of hers on a personal level for various reasons but I dont have to like her for me to think she is the best candidate and will have a larger positive impact on this country.

Hell any reservations I had went out the window when the GOP A) said she would be another Obama Term (cause life is just so horrid now in comparison to when their guy had power) and B) when they said they would continue to block the Supreme Court nomination. They are scared, they know she wont put up a centrist for nomination and since I want to pack the court with Liberals I am a happy guy!

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXIII: The Penultimate Thread

Not only is it a cop out but the Biden love is hilarious. He got beat by Kerry in 2004. And I'm remembering it wasn't that close.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXIII: The Penultimate Thread

Biden is great and I respect the hell out of him...but he would not have won. Biden's problem was he didnt think before he spoke which puts him on the same level as Drumpf. (the media likes him cause is the King of All Gaffs) The campaign would have been a mess.

Biden would be great AS President, but he is terrible at running FOR President.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXIII: The Penultimate Thread

No. I laughed. It was good satire. Satire knows no party.

Whomever wins will be an epically flawed candidate. However, neither of them should do a TR and announce they'd serve only 1 term.

Again, for you sure.

The only reason Hillary is "especially" flawed to you is that you buy into the investigations that have found nothing. As if they *have* to find something, and are biased to that thought.

For some of us, Hillary is a great candidate. Her flaws are no worse than any other previous President of the United States.

There's a health club near my house called Orange Therapy (chain?), and the theme is that the entire place is lit with orange lights (I don't pretend to know the marketing reason there). Trump's candidacy makes me wonder if they're seeing a down tick in their business.

I thought it was clear what you were saying but that may be because I agree with you. ;)

For the record I think Hillary will be a fine president.

She will be seriously hampered by a GOP House (this seems inevitable now) but as long as she has the Senate for the first two years I believe she and Senate leadership from both parties will accomplish a fair amount.

If the House GOP keeps Ryan she will be about as good a person in the White House as we could ask for in negotiating deals between the parties. If the House GOP replaces Ryan with a bomb-thrower the Republicans will simply sabotage the entire federal government, setting up a cycle of executive orders to cover Congressional inaction followed by far right yelpings of executive overreach and of course endless investigations to feed the maw of our delightful right wing Al Qaeda.

The current Republican party is a drunken toddler with an assault rifle. It holds the country hostage. Unless and until we can disarm it and send it to indefinite timeout, all any president can do is work around the edges.

But that's OK because it's not like we face serious systemic problems or anything like that... :(

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXIII: The Penultimate Thread

On 538 Hillary is starting to pull out of the dive.

Yeah with the way polls are starting to show her in the lead again (including a flip in the ABC Poll I believe) you are seeing the after effects of the Drumpf/FBI surge taper off. Drumpf is leading Rasmussen and LA Times and has a tie in the IDP poll (the only 3 he trusts) and the rest at worst lean Clinton. I think early voting in NC and Florida will flip them back to Hillary in the end.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXIII: The Penultimate Thread

Idiotic to think this race "should have been over already". Its really the mantra of simpletons and pundits, which I realize is somewhat redundant. :D What we've found is America is a lot more openly bigoted, or tolerant of bigotry, than we all led ourselves to believe. That has nothing to do with Hillary, Biden, Democratic Jesus, or anybody else who would have allegedly put this race away early.

Anecdotal early voting update from various sources which you can go research yourself. This is based on swing states with EVs and compared to 2012 or where polling on early voting is available.

Nevada - Strongest Dem swing state turnout thus far. Estimated over half the electorate has already voted which is over 2012. Apples to apples comparison as days/times have not changed. Hillary running 6% higher in EV, similar to Obama's margin of victory.

Colorado - A little more scant info here but Dems outperforming vs last election. 2012 GOP led in early/absentee ballot voting. This year they're running even or behind. Believe Obama won CO by like 4%.

Iowa - Dems running a bit behind 2012 #'s but still ahead of GOP by about 50K (GOP running same as 2012). Not sure how much of electorate votes early.

Ohio - A little harder to compare vs 2012 due to tighter early voting window. Dems started lower primarily due to African American turnout and now trying to catch up in urban counties. Probably Dems worse state at this point.

NC - Impossible to compare to 2012. One less week of an early voting window and less polling places to start off. Full early voting began late last week. Both sides seem to agree Hillary has low double digit lead in early voting. 2M votes cast so far this year. About 4.5M total were cast in 2012.

Florida - Big dispute about the #'s here. A couple of polls have Hillary up double digits and getting a big (28%) crossover vote from Republicans. Not sure about that, but women make up larger % of the electorate than 2012, which isn't a good sign for the Trumpster. Black vote down, Hispanic vote up. Wild card is non-affiliated voters, who apparently tend to be younger and more Hispanic. Two party turnout extremely close thus far.

All in all from what I've seen/heard Dems are looking good in NV and FL, running behind 2012 in OH and IA, and cautiously optimistic in North Carolina which should become clearer this weekend with the Souls to the Polls African American voting drive that takes place on Sundays before the election.
