Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXII: Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Politicians!

Yeah, there were a couple of good ones in there, like knowing the jokes ahead of time thanks to Donna Brazile. They could have been helped if he had bothered to read or even browse through them ahead of time, or bothered to take the smallest effort to deliver them in a humorous manner. I mean, Hillary isn't Henny Youngman, but she at least understands the basics of timing and giving the appearance she isn't reading something for the first time; and she had a few self-deprecating ones. I think those in attendance were maybe less ****ed about the specific contents of his lines and the fact it was basically an angry stump speech with a few attempts at punchlines thrown in there.

Listening to hers now, it's great. Her noting she's speaking after Trump and saying she's surprised he's allowing a peaceful transition of power. Her saying Pence will have to deny of all his jokes afterwards.

"It's a shame [Bloomberg] isn't speaking tonight, I'm curious to hear what a billionaire has to say."

I noticed the same thing as well. It's as if he didn't know he had to speak and they rushed it. You nailed it. He didn't look at the camera once in the middle of a sentence.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXII: Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Politicians!

Just saw Trump's performance.

Amazing as he was doing quite well and then nosedived.

Must be incredibly frustrating to be working his campaign coz the guy from the first part of that performance could have probably given Hilary a run at this.

But the true character broke through in the end.

Trump don't have a lot of stamina. Or work ethic. Or knowledge about the issues nor any desire to educate himself about them.

Either that, or the coke wore off.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXII: Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Politicians!

I don't believe the repubs had anyone in the primaries who could win the presidency . The party is too splintered at this point. They had no one who could unite the party. This will be their undoing in the future also. They will have strongholds in different parts of the country but nationally they aren't viable.

I know some guys who loved cruz, why? He is a social conservative. That ship has sailed. They better get over it

I think if they'd nominated anyone other than Drumpf, they'd be in good shape to take this thing. Cruz, L'il Marco, and especially Kasich would have appealed to more than just Trump's basket of deplorables. Whether that would be enough to offset the deplorables abandonment, I don't know. But as we've seen with even Trump, when push comes to shove, Repub voters will still support the Repub nominee, no matter how heinous.

On my cycling board, back before the primaries got underway, the rightwingers kept boasting about Trump like he was gonna be the big witch killer if he got the nomination. Those of us on the left were, "Yes, please, nominate Donald Trump. Please." And then they went ahead and did it, and they were still thinking they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. What the Republican wingnuts don't seem to understand, just cause they have 30% wingnut support in the wingnut primaries, much of the rest of the American public does not think like them. Trump thought he could keep doing the same things that had the deplorables cheering for in the primaries in the general, seeming to not understand that that doesn't go over well with a huge part of America.

No.

My guess is that several others from the GOP field would have beaten Hilary or at least made it pucker-worthy close.

Hilary has not run a great campaign nor is she likable on any level.

Trump not only blew it, but it also became abundantly clear that he was woefully unqualified for the job.

Of course many of us knew this (the unqualified part) before he even announced, but the general public takes a little longer to come around coz they're stupid.

To be fair she didnt have to run a great campaign. She had to not screw up and let him implode. She did that.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXII: Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Politicians!

Personally, I think Hillary has run a near perfect campaign. The only major gaffes are the deplorables comment and the fainting. She did exactly what she needed to. Again, almost perfectly.

If she were running against someone else, it would have been different.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXII: Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Politicians!

There actually was one moderate Republican running. He's the Libertarian vice presidential nominee. :p

People keep talking about Trump as if he fell from the sky. The Republicans nominated him. It's not like the GOP was saddled with a freakish racist, sexist gargoyle who spoiled their chances at an otherwise winnable election. They chose a freakish racist, sexist gargoyle to represent them.

As long as that remains true the GOP primary is going to spit out a general election loser.

Bingo...and this is what the smart GOPers said after Mitt got destroyed in 2012 and no one listened they doubled down. Now they have no one left because everyone endorsed Drumpf until it was too late.

The party needs a page 1 rewrite...

She ran a good campaign. I'm not that surprised -- the Clintons are very good at this. Hopefully she will continue on and govern well. She won't get any help from the Freedumb Caucus types, but people should remember that the GOP Members named her as the most effective Democrat to reach across the aisle during her time in the Senate. She was well-liked because she did the work and got stuff done and if you were part of the solution you got included and got credit regardless of your party. In that respect she is a throwback to the way Congress used to work. Obama never quite figured out how to work with people who publicly called him Satan. Hillary understands that members from backwoods districts have to call her Satan -- that's the carrying cost of representing rubes. But it doesn't have to get in the way of The Work.

Hate Radio and Trump TV (we won't mention FNC since it seems like its goose is cooked) will keep on with the same garbage that Obama faced, but if McConnell and Ryan want to get control of their caucuses they can start working with her and delivering compromise legislation. The bomb throwers will do their eejit act but those few adults who remain on the right might actually act in the best interests of the country for once.

I am guardedly hopeful that the Cruz types won't be able to throw a crying jag and shut down the government for at least a decade. For one thing, hopefully we will have the Senate for a couple years, and show what can be done. For another, a few of the real f-ckwits from the House class of 2016 might lose out this year to a larger electorate. And finally who knows how much of the insanity from the right was driven by their constituents wanting a lynching in the Oval Office? They might relax now that it's the White House again (although that crowd typically is just as ghastly about gender).

Marco would have had to improve his debate skills 100% or he would have died. Hillary would have made him look scripted and boring (and that is saying something) which would have turned off the middle. He wuld also have to explain why he pivoted on issues in the Primaries because they were too close to hers. (like Amnesty)

Cruz would have gone nowhere. The man is hated by most of his own party...

Kasich might have had a shot until Women's Rights came around.

Sooner or later the issues come up and with a Supreme Court Justice on the line no lefties are going to let someone who is against Gay Marriage, Immigration and Women's Rights get the chance to fill the seat. That was why the Republican Senate did more to kill the election than anything when they refused to fill Scalia's seat. It was a massive tactical mistake.

Doing quite well relative to what?

It will never cease to amaze that people actually buy the arguments the GOP makes on trade, wages, or any other economic matter. They ***** about pennies while they blow wads of millions on the few and the connected.

He was calm and making the arguments his party would want. Until Hillary accused him of choking he was a normal GOP guy and Wallace was holding his hand. After that he went off the rails.

All her campaign strategy had to be was to sit back, stay semi-competent on the world of politics, attempt to be less robotic, and wait for Trump to simultaneous implode and explode. It's a fairly simple race to win at this point.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXII: Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Politicians!

Senate is looking very good.

R --> D
2 All But Certain: IL, WI
2 Likely: IN, NH
2 Leaning: MO, PA
1 Leaning Against: NC
1 Likely Against: FL

D --> R
1 Leaning: NV

Just Likely+ gives us our needed +4 (with the prez).

A moderate D wave saving NV and killing the R's down to FL would give us +8.

A moderate R wave flipping NV and saving the R's up to MO/PA would give us +3 and save the Senate for the bad guys.

Right now the range is {+3, +8} with an expected value of around +6.

Five guys that would have totally won the national election, according to some people in this thread, couldn't do that so...

That's the part I don't get. Take Kasich, the Great GOP Hope. So, he couldn't out debate Donald freakin' Trump, whereas Hillary ate him for lunch 3 times. He couldn't even win the GOP primary in such flaming conservative states as MA, VT, MD, RI, or NY. He couldn't win any state next door to Ohio. Furthermore he was a Gingrich apostle back during his Congressional career, something he'd have to answer for who also wants massive tax cuts for the 1%.

People, its not 1988 anymore. None of this sh !t sells. If it did, Republicans wouldn't have been outvoted in 5 out of the last 6 elections.

I never said anything about a GOP candidate winning this election. Kasich may have been their best bet from the primary field, but he wasn't a particularly strong candidate in total. This entire election was the Shrill One's to lose from the word Go.

Events are closing in on Little Marco. Fox has him tied and QU has him up by 2 this week. These are both GOP friendly posters.
