Campaign 2016 Part XXI: Do you love farce? My fault, I fear.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXI: Do you love farce? My fault, I fear.

In my opinion thinking like this is why we need a real left in this country. Thinking Obama is liberal, even modestly, or that Warren and Sanders are "dangerous," is the textbook example of the Overton window.

That's how far right we have drifted since 1980. Obama is more conservative than Bush was legislatively.

What the hell is wrong with men? Seriously, how can Trump be +11 with men? I know we're stupid -- I grew up with us -- but in all that God considers holy, what is the fundamental brain damage of our gender?!

The Garfield colored caricature loves molesting pretty ladies, enjoys shi**y tacos in a bowl, has no filter on the racist thoughts his mouth spews out, and wants to deport all those **** *******, ******, ********, ********, ****, ********, and some Irish out if this Lilly white land of ours. He's a true everyday Joe just like all hot blooded American males!

Now excuse me while I go dip my phone in a bucket of bleach after typing that. Trump is NOT who I want as a role model.

Hillary has no discernible religion or faith and shows it

Hillary's a secularized Christian whose policies are targeted to try to make things a little easier for the poor. That's living up to her faith. That a segment of the population can't understand either clause is a comment on them, not her.

He's got a point about the Irish.

... secularized Christian ...

"Secularized Christian" is an oxymoron.
To be Christian means to live a life in and for Christ, not just part of a life, but a life*.

But to your point of Hillary being a "secularized Christian", or more precisely, "secularized", yeah, she's secular, and that's why I said it was a toss-up between her and Trump.

*Full disclosure: I ain't very good at that.

Thank you for demonstrating my thesis.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXI: Do you love farce? My fault, I fear.

Seconded. I would never skip voting. That would be an insult to everyone in every country who has ever fought for the right of self-determination. It is bad enough that I am not an activist. That's the level of my betrayal of our ideals. But voting is IMHO the absolute minimal level of compliance of the requirement of a free people.

“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.”

Likewise with voting.

Also: I don't know about anybody else but when I vote I feel good. I come out of the polling site with a spring in my step, and it's not just because hockey season is starting. For one day I feel connected to and brothers with all my fellow Americans. It's really the only time I feel patriotic, and it feels great.

We may have different reasons for voting. For me, it just feels right.

Regarding the point that generated this discussion, I'll admit that when I vote I sometimes don't vote for some of the downballot offices, where I don't know the candidates, especially if they're running unopposed.

okay, "force" is not the word, you're right. Let's try tThis: It's not cool with me when people try to persuade me to vote for their guy by means of transferring guilt. Acceptable? Bunch of pedantics around here. :p

Totally acceptable, as would have been "It annoys the [asterisk string] out of me when people try to convince me by making me feel guilty." And violently agree that the right to vote includes the right not to vote (I believe North Korea does better than 99%), even if I don't agree with the reason anyone else chooses to vote or not to vote. Even agree with your parting statement.:)

My iron clad strategy for downballot races I don't know anything about: vote for the candidate with the fewest signs.

I live in a one party region of a one party state. Most of the downballot races are unopposed, even reps in congress :(. So nobody has signs. The incumbent doesn't need them; they'd win the race if their family voted for them, and there is no opposition.

Obama is not solidly left, but as ontheissues says he's liberal (80% on social/20% on economic...where 50/50 is middle of the road). I would also say Warren and Sanders are not dangerous (certainly not like Trump). But full-stop change over to free higher education is - without going to war - probably as dangerous and fraught with as much risk towards the economy as one can get.

Progressiveness is nearly always the best approach. But simple radical change does not simply equal progress.

There is no such thing as unopposed.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXI: Do you love farce? My fault, I fear.

How can even one person vote for this guy?

Four women who competed in the 1997 Miss Teen USA beauty pageant said Donald Trump walked into the dressing room while contestants — some as young as 15 — were changing.

I remember putting on my dress really quick because I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s a man in here,’” said Mariah Billado, the former Miss Vermont Teen USA.

Trump, she recalled, said something like, “Don’t worry, ladies, I’ve seen it all before.”

Three other women, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of getting engulfed in a media firestorm, also remembered Trump entering the dressing room while girls were changing. Two of them said the girls rushed to cover their bodies, with one calling it “shocking” and “creepy.” The third said she was clothed and introduced herself to Trump.

The minimum age for Miss Teen USA contestants is actually 14. That didn’t stop Trump from going backstage to get a peek. Sneaking looks at young women in his contests was one of Trump’s great pleasures—one of the perks of ownership.

“I’ll tell you the funniest is that I’ll go backstage before a show and everyone’s getting dressed,” Trump told Howard Stern in recordings released Saturday by CNN. “No men are anywhere, and I’m allowed to go in, because I’m the owner of the pageant and therefore I’m inspecting it. … ‘Is everyone OK?’ You know, they’re standing there with no clothes. ‘Is everybody OK?’ And you see these incredible looking women, and so I sort of get away with things like that.”

Getting away with things because of his position is the Donald Trump theme song. Unfortunately, this was one of the rare occasions when Trump wasn't lying.

“He just came strolling right in. There was no second to put a robe on or any sort of clothing or anything. Some girls were topless. Others girls were naked.”

No, it's not.

Iraq War - Not Conservative.
Medicare Prescription Part D - Not Conservative
No Child Left Behind - Not Conservative
Tax Cuts - Not Conservative

Obama - Major Legislation

Obamacare - Conservative

It's not even close.
