Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

For every powerful there's at least one poser. :D

src?

The best part about those ads is the cliche of the manly looking but actually effeminate model is itself a cliche that Tough Guys (TM) use to tell themselves their beer guts make them attractive to women (spoiler: they don't). The ad is actually a double parody, with the people who buy the product not getting the second joke.

You know the old saying. "I could never be gay. I just can't get that fit." :)

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

Strictly anecdotal, but my eyeballs at the gym. I see many of those guys with "toned for show" arms that have nothing behind them. I think it upsets them when a physically unassuming guy like me starts his workout at the same setting they finished theirs at.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

Despite my perceived jerkiness ;) I can appreciate the allure of a hypothetical middle of the road 3rd party candidate unbound by party doctrine to say and do what's right for the country. Ross Perot came closest to filling that void and looking back on it I give him tremendous credit for bagging about 20% of the vote with no help from an organized party apparatus. The problem is before and since him 3rd party candidates are usually unserious loons with poorly thought out positions or single issue candidates. Gary Johnson and Jill Stein aren't in the conversation or the debates because they're both nuts. If you want ridiculous conspiracy theories like vaccinations cause autism (Stein) or zero workable knowledge of foreign affairs (Johnson) just vote Trump.

I still disagree. Bernie wasn't bound by party doctrine. Trump certainly wasn't. Party doctrine is only as good as the public support that it has. If they're not politically savvy enough to build consensus on their home turf, I have no interest in seeing them try and fail at the national level.

The question is, where does that large cohort of Johnson voters that were smart enough not to vote Trump, but still needed to vote for a ***** end up going? Do they thank God there is a curtain on the ballot station and vote Trump(I don't know why, but reading this board has made me extremely paranoid about people voting Trump, despite claiming otherwise publicly), or do they just sit the thing out, which presumably has big implications down the ballot?

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

That's gonna leave a mark.

Not to nitpick (translated: stand by), but isn't the issue "equal pay for equal work"? Trump saying, "If they do as good of a job", isn't that saying equal pay for equal work? Am I missing a nuance? And if that woman is the top performer in a company (should be true 50% or more of the time based on workforce participation rates), if she's out on maternity it does inconvenience the business.

Trump not paying taxes? As long as he'd doing it LEGALLY, fine. That's where I'd like the returns (or the audit findings ;) ).

Otherwise, it's Trump being Trump. Anyone surprised?

I'll still go vote, but, I'm deciding if I write in "None of the above" or "Vermin Supreme" or just leave it blank. But, I'm still going to vote and in that I suspect I'll be more the exception. (Many will stay home.)

I agree with you on the bare fact, but I also don't have the sensitivity that women do of being treated like sh-t and mansplained to at work by their d-uchebag male "superiors."

There's also this, which is a problem that men never have to face. Munroe titled that one "How It Works," just to explain to the lunkheaded men among us how sexism really works in the workplace.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

This is probably the strongest evidence yet in support of the Rover Hypothesis: that while Trump may be appealing to uneducated whites, there will not be enough of them at the polls to matter. In this case, the evidence suggests that Trump has not inspired an upsurge in registration among uneducated whites. He needs to inject those new voters into the electorate to have a chance as that is literally the only demo among who he will do better than Romney. In all other demos he runs the same as Romney, worse (in the case of blacks), much worse (Latinos) and potentially much, MUCH worse (women).

The Republicans have been going full bore for a decade making it harder to register in order to suppress the votes of Democratic constituencies. Wouldn't it be the ultimate irony if those measures cost Trump the election by suppressing his constituency?

"Never Turn Your Back on a Weasel, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Little Marco"

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said in a Thursday interview that Donald Trump will have to “answer some questions” about a Newsweek report alleging one of his companies broke the Cuban trade embargo in 1998.

“This is something they’re going to have to give a response to. I mean, it was a violation of American law, if that’s how it happened,” he said on the ESPN/ABC Capital Games podcast. “I hope the Trump campaign is going to come forward and answer some questions about this, because if what the article says is true — and I’m not saying that it is, we don’t know with a hundred percent certainty — I’d be deeply concerned about it. I would.”

This is Marco pandering to FL Cubans in an attempt to retain the job he hates, but it also shows that you can only push a spineless wimp so far before he bursts into tears and ruins your tie.

Note that in addition to giving Apricot Adolf negative press nationally, this also harms him in FL, one of the two purple states (along with OH) which Trump basically must win to have any chance at all.

Revenge is a dish best served frío.

What are the various deadlines for voter registration? 30 days? At the polls?

I ask because ND is the only state without voter registration.

I'm guessing they (and the rest of the world in general) are paying far less attention to you than you'd like to imagine.

Forgive me if I hear Ricky Ricardo's voice when I see Rubio say tDon has to "answer some questions" --> "Donald ... you've got some 'splainin' to do!" :D

We have 39 days before the election, so in all seriousness anybody reading this who has not registered please do and please vote, yes, even you Trumpettes. I would prefer a country where 100% vote and my party loses than 50% vote and my party wins. Informed participation is the cost of maintaining a democratic society and a republican form of government. Please do your part, even if it's a PITA.

Probably, but I smile just the same. (I do know one trainer there just shakes his head when he sees me max out their leg machines. ;) )

There are lots of social psych experiments that suggest people overestimate how much other people are looking at them by two orders of magnitude. Basically, people are watching us 1% of the time we think they are. :)

I suppose an appearance by Heavenly Palace at Washington University on October 9 is too much to count on.

Maine has same-day registration. If you aren't registered, you go in a different line and get registered. Then you can vote. If you are already registered to vote but are not enrolled in a party you can do so at the polling place (for example, to vote in a primary), but you can't change parties on voting day.

Yup. The cutoff is creeping up pretty close in a lot of places.

In Boston in the early 90s I could walk into the Democratic primary, change my registration from Independent to Democrat, vote, then change back on the way out. It was easy, too.
