Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was In)

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

When the GOP convention was in St. Paul, I took off work that week even though my office is in Minneapolis. There were some events planned in Minneapolis, and MPD had commandeered some of the municipal parking areas to stage response teams, things that were set up in the week prior to the convention. So glad I didn't have to commute through any of it.

I worked at the Xcel every day of the convention...it wasnt that bad though the checkpoints were annoying. Worked an event at the Minneapolis Convention Center as well and the parking situation seemed fine. A lot of that stuff was blown way out of proportion IMHO.

I keep waiting for the media to start treating him and his supporters like the incompetent racists they are.

The Hillary ad that's been running with the children is outstanding and chilling.

That one's OK, but I wonder if it plays too much into his image as the bad boy. I saw another one (which is odd because I'm in CA and usually never see any) where it shows Trump saying he gets his foreign policy information from "the shows" versus all of Hillary's accomplishments as SoS, and basically says we need experience in unsure times; that's the kind I would stick with, basically showing it's night and day between a grownup with knowledge and experience and a child pulling stuff out if his ***.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

There is an interview with Pence and Trump on 60 Minutes. Trump is completely incoherent. Pence is evasive.

Apparently Trump is religious because he won the evangelicals.

Pence feels like someone trying to explain what his friend is saying so he doesn't get sucked into a fight.

Edit: "We're going to have something called 'extreme vetting'". Oooh, he learned a new adjective.

Edit2: So I'm guessing calling Trump "a good man" is the new party marching orders, based on the number of times I've heard it used today?

That's fine for people like you, FR, but a bunch of red, white and blue balloons and a speech that connects with their fears will snag what little gray matter many voters have.

Think if someone was saying that about your surgeon. You would never allow him within 100' of you with a scalpel.

But hey, let's give him the football.

I've been saying this for months, and maybe even posted it here. Those who think Trump can pivot to something resembling "presidential" in a few months are -- for want of a better word -- idiots. If he isn't presidential material now, he won't be in 3 months or 6 months or a year. This is not a occupation that comes with a probationary period. It's actually like being an umpire. You need to be perfect on opening day, and get better throughout the season. If he can't do the job now, he can't do it on January 20th, 2017 people.

George W. Bush was the least qualified person in my lifetime, by far, to be nominated by a major party for president. Until now. Trump makes GWB look like a combination of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Teddy Roosevelt. Hell, he's got me voting for freeking Hillary Clinton and encouraging voter fraud for all my friends and relatives who live in Indiana by having them use my address to cast a vote that might matter.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

How was W the least qualified? I would have put that title on Obama. He had mostly state legislature experience and what? A year or two in the senate?

W had been a full term governor IIRC.

Part of that is a personal viewpoint no doubt, but I consider much more than just their lives as elected officials. For the record I look at Obama as not being particularly well prepared for office either, but his complete biography prepared him moreso than GWB. Again, my personal viewpoint and I accept other readings on him as not being unprepared for the presidency. 25 years from now, when it actually becomes fair to measure him, the world may agree with my take, or it may not. Trump, on the other hand, I won't entertain any notion that he is qualified to even be the dog catcher in the tiny one stoplight town I grew up in. Voting for him borders on being an unpatriotic act.

Not that I'm going to vote, b/c I hate all the candidates, but I am almost pulling for Trump. Why? NOTHING will get done. The R/D that hate him (and rightfully so) will block/not approve anything he proposes. Sometimes doing nothing is better than doing something (harmful).

It that a sad thing to say? Yes. Undoubtedly. But welcome to this year's election. We have a candidate that the FBI won't touch, and we have a carny showman.

Federal judicial appointments. Lifetime. Lots of them. They won't shut the entire process down for 4 years.

You jumped before my edit, I guess.

Plus foreign policy could be a huge catastrophe.

No one will work with Trump. Basically, press "pause" on the USA IMO.

Russians, Syrians, Iraqis, Afghans, Pakistanis, Israelis, Palestinians, Turks? They will press "pause?"

There is the million dollar question. Will actions by Hillary be better or worse than Trump? I have no clue. I may have an idea, but we've all been wrong about these things before. And let's face it, I'm guessing we will be electing the first woman president (and that is amazing in a good way, in general, IMO, just wish it wasn't her) in a few months.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

We also have a ticket with 2 honest successful governors.
Or a green party candidate that looks to be pretty popular. I'd think Bernie supporters would flock to her.

So you want to be the American equivalent of the Brexit voters who did it as a joke, not realizing it would actually pass and fark the country?

Good call.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

A Trump presidency would almost certainly mean a GOP sweep of all three branches, and a freezing of the current -- hopefully transient -- lunatic wing in the federal courts for 20-30 years. That is too dangerous to risk.

Hillary is tough and ornery, and I'm not going to enjoy some aspects of her presidency, but the alternative is too frightening to contemplate. It would be like electing George Wallace at the height of the 60s riots. No thank you.
