Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

lol

That means by noon 80% of GOP voters will believe that but also believe Mitch is a weakling who will fold. :p

I told you guys: Hillary should just put a frothing insane lefty justice on the Court because the GOP treats anybody to the left of Genghis Khan that way anyway. That entire party is the boy who cried wolf going on 30 years now.
Oh I agree. I think I stated at the outset that Hillary should go far left if those clowns think Garland is a radical.

I hope so. The old Democratic party would have figured out how to screw it up, but the new one seems to actually work.

Maybe it's just whoever has the South is too dumb to function. :D

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

The #1 Goal here is to pack the courts. All the courts. Starting with the SCOTUS. To do that you need the Presidency and the Senate. Get a BIG sense of urgency here and eliminate filibuster and dumb blue slip idiocy in Senate. Appoint uber-liberal replacements for Scalia and Ginsburg and Breyer and hope Kennedy and Thomas see the writing on the wall.

Then fill all outstanding judicial vacancies. Every one. Ram through Dem appointees. By 2018 most recent Reagan appointee would have been on bench for 30 years. Can't be too many left at that point. Dems should have majorities in all circuit courts.

Once this is accomplished everything flows from there. EPA rulings. Voting rights. Reproductive Rights. ACA. Immigration. You name it.

Apparently I don't fear the world as much as you. The only Dems voting Trump are people in the South and Appalachia who stopped voting for the Dem nominee in 1980 and haven't looked back, but who never got around to changing their registration. Trump is doomed. For him to win this election he needs to either convert 3-4M Obama voters from 2012 into Trump voters () or he needs 7M Obama voters to stay home....with the SCOTUS on the line. Trump is very amusing. I too watched some of the GOP debates. That doesn't equate to voting for the man.

Shrillary will convert a few those former Obama voters for him too.

She might, but on the flip side Mittens lost Hispanics by about 72-28. There is no way Trump gets 28% of Hispanics to vote for him unless they're all masochists. Mind you this also assumes all Sanders voters too young to participate in 2012, or who were of age but didn't get around to voting, don't participate in this election either. That's unlikely as some of them will come around.

This whole thing is Shrillary's to lose. That said, if there's any candidate currently going that could lose an almost sure-thing, it's her. We already know what Drumpf is, and it's not good. It's now on Shrill to not be so blasé about the individual interests of her potential voters the way she was when visiting Minnesota during the primaries. Those types news clips could haunt her to the very end, easily dismissing the concerns of her "sure thing" voting blocs is a good way to keep them home on cold Tuesday in November.

All this would be true if not for the overriding issue of deciding who controls the SCOTUS. You're asking a lot out of lefties to completely ignore having liberals run the court for the first time in generations. You're also figuring Hispanics are too lazy to vote against a man who wants to deport half of them regardless of their legal status.

You're overestimating how much of the American voting public actually pays close enough attention to the minutiae of politics to think about which party will be stacking the courts for the next generation.

At this point, I think it has become a legitimate campaign issue, albeit a secondary one. Both sides are going to continue to harp on it, but most of the sheep will vote with their wallets.

The Court is one of those things that if you're voting on it you're already following the process very closely and you already know who you are backing. Right now the only practical electioneering use of the Court is a cudgel from the DNC and RNC to pull partisans sick of the nominees into line.

Even though they are on their way to be routed in the Culture Wars, the right does have an advantage on single issue voters re: abortion. Lefties who favor choice include it in a cluster of other values (feminism, personal privacy, anti-theocracy, etc). Righties who want to ban abortion typically have it at #1 with a bullet. So they always win the enthusiasm gap on that issue. The homophobia and transphobia and racism of the GOP base hasn't been able to shift an election (though it did help them in 2010), but TEH DED BABIEZ sure can and does win them elections up and down ticket and will until science makes the whole thing go away.

Gotta agree with Rover on this. The leftover Dixiecrats and Reagan Democrats might still technically be registered D but they haven't voted D since LBJ came down from Mount Sinai with two tumblers of Cutty Sark and freed the slaves.

Also correct. The Dem leadership might be agreeable to this knowing the clock is ticking with a midterm coming up. Hopefully the Dems (mostly Obama) p-ssing away their supermajority in 2008 taught the Democratic leadership that they can never mess up like that again, and that log-rolling is impossible with a disloyal opposition that would rather see the country fail than a Democratic president succeed.

Not to mention that the only possibility of Congress actually acting on some of our problems and, you know, governing, is if they can break the logjam up and down Republican lines. Much easier to do at 50 than 60. And such successes are the best chance of an incumbent Member getting re-elected, and Congress' collective favorability inching ahead of lice.

A decent piece on Hillary's problems with the left. Clearly written from a pro-Hillary POV, but not blindly.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

David French(the guy that does Game of Thrones recaps for the National Review, obviously) is Bill Kristol's surprise third party #NeverTrump candidate. Should make for an interesting news cycle.
