Re: Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

Makes sense. If you don't believe workers and women need an education, you don't believe in science, and you think history is communist and liberal arts is gay, that really cuts school budgets down to home ec for girl poors, metal shop for boy poors, museum curatorship for rich women and finance for rich men.

Bible studies for everybody, natch. But only the approved kind where you ignore everything after 1517.

Until every guy knows how to repair a button on a shirt or jacket, home ec is a necessity. Well, for that and to make sure guys know how to cook more than just Easy Mac. Same with shop class. Everyone should know the basics.

I don't think Liberal Arts are "gay" so much as I think it's a very poor career choice without careful planning.

Liberal arts, when used in its traditional sense, is the core of education - science, math, English, and history. How are they poor career choices? Perhaps when you get to college, and employers want specialized degrees, they prove problematic, but for primary and secondary educations liber arts are where every school should focus.

Well said.

Which is exactly why the focus needs to be on education. They can't teach those things because they don't have the money to.

Don't forget parts of the Bible being intentionally skipped because they don't profess the control desired.

People judge the quality of career choices based upon not only what you can do with them, but also the demand for it, possibly one in the same. This is one of the reasons I chose computer engineering over music: high demand vs. subjective and limited opportunity. What are you going to do as a history or English major, besides teach (already fairly cutthroat as it is)?

I work in Trust Operations for a very large bank. We're littered with people who have history, psychology, music, and all other assortments of degrees. What I've learned is that while have a specific sort of degree is more likely to get you in the door here, once you're in you climb however high your amibition and talent will take you. Because there were a lot of guys with finance and accounting degrees working the trained monkey positions while many of my fellow analysts have music degrees and the like, a couple never completed their undergrad degrees.

ETA: Besides that, Music isn't a liberal arts field. It's a fine arts field, so it doesn't really apply to Liberal Arts (which could also be called "SHEM" in our acronym-crazed society.

The point still remains: Why did they spend six figures for something they can't use?

How many HS or college kids know how to change the car oil, replace a switch or socket, wire a circuit, cook a meal, make something out of wood, repair a faucet, balance a checkbook, mix and pour concrete, understand credit, manage a household budget, etc?

Yet we are forced to memorize dates, learn it's the white man's fault, dissect a frog, understand the difference between an exo and endothermic reactions, and figure out the thrust to weight ratio of a rocket.

We need geometry, algebra, English, Spanish as the basics plus the "home ec" side in order to survive. Depending on ones specialty depends the rest of the courseload n

That's for them to decide. It's no skin off my chin, unless they're seeking gov't handouts because they refuse to take a job in a field unrelated to their majors.

Well, obviously. I'm talking college and whatnot. Guess I should have made that more clear since we were talking K-12 :D

They are getting handouts. It's called subsidized student loans.

Home ec? How sexist of you! :p

In college, though, Liberal Arts is pretty encompassing. I say that from first hand experience because I have an economics degree, which was in the College of Social Sciences when in school and was then reorganized into the College of Liberal Arts. There are a lot of majors found in the COLA that are actually worth something, unlike the social scientists that my professor would mock at least once each class.

There's no question that economics and accounting have their place. Because of the information age, though, those sorts of occupations are quickly turning into how to organize an Excel spreadsheet.

Re: Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

That's comical. You have any idea how many billions the US Gov't profits off of it's school loan programs?

A lot.

It helps when you make it so student loans cannot be dissolved in bankruptcy court, too. Golden rule.

You're confusing book keeping with accounting. And economics goes well beyond what a spreadsheet can tell you, though it is an extraordinary skill to have in order to make the job easier.

Since when has a Koch backed presidential candidate win an election? They weren't really huge fans of W, just accepting of him as the party's candidate. They're far too much into the conservative Libertarian causes and ideals to back anyone who would be able to gain their support during the primaries and win the general election.
