Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

How many HS or college kids know how to change the car oil, replace a switch or socket, wire a circuit, cook a meal, make something out of wood, repair a faucet, balance a checkbook, mix and pour concrete, understand credit, manage a household budget, etc?

Yet we are forced to memorize dates, learn it's the white man's fault, dissect a frog, understand the difference between an exo and endothermic reactions, and figure out the thrust to weight ratio of a rocket.

We need geometry, algebra, English, Spanish as the basics plus the "home ec" side in order to survive. Depending on ones specialty depends the rest of the courseload n
And thank your republican friends for chopping education budgets to the point that all that stuff is gone. Why? Because no matter what science and math are still more important.

And yes it was the white man's fault. Our country has pretty terrible record.

Since when has a Koch backed presidential candidate win an election? They weren't really huge fans of W, just accepting of him as the party's candidate. They're far too much into the conservative Libertarian causes and ideals to back anyone who would be able to gain their support during the primaries and win the general election.

Money is uncontrollable now. When W ran we had laws. They didn't like Romney. Walker has a lot of street cred and now he's got the money. Tough combo with unlimited funds. But, whatever. You'd disagree with me if I said water was wet.

The point still remains: Why did they spend six figures for something they can't use?

It depends where you're coming from and where you're going. In my position, it was a matter of: why not? The point of getting a high paying job is to maximize your enjoyment through the things you can afford. I've maximized my enjoyment by having life-long intellectual passions many of which go directly back to my liberal arts education, and I still have a high paying job.

Two caveats. (1) It may be different if you're not at a Tier 1 school. To some extent, having a degree from a school that impresses employers (whatever the merits of that) does give you a lot more flexibility. For example, I entered as a Journalism major -- an applied, "instrumentalist" major. If I had gone to Syracuse or Northwestern, two excellent journalism programs from solid Tier 2 schools, I would have been much less likely to explore the options and move to liberal arts. (2) It may be different now. When I was an undergrad, the only really seriously cutthroat fields were academia and medicine. From what I understand, in fields like law, computer science, and some types of engineering, it's now virtually impossible to get an entry job without the type of hardcore networking that only comes from coloring inside the lines of an instrumentalist major with internships.

Hillary may have problems, but money won't be one of them. I would not be surprised if Hillary doesn't outraise the entire GOP field, Kochs et al notwithstanding.

She's not really a Democrat. She's a stand-alone brand, with an obscene amount of money behind her. I've heard people who oughta know opine that ironically Citizens United may actually help her in the long run. That would be -- well, sickening -- but some fine black comedy, too.

But since we've had the popular vote for president, has anything REALLY changed? Money, not the message, counts the most.

That's because you would find a way to say "Water is wet!" in the most disagreeable, whiny, and obnoxious fashion possible. ;)

Hillary will have Wall Street throwing money at her...forget the Kochs.

You name your price I will take Hillary and you can have Walker. Extra credit, if one of our candidates doesnt make it out of the primaries we retire from all boards we post on? You got the cajones to back up your windmill tilting Sancho?:p

Re: Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

Good NPR discussion about this last night. With all money included I believe the Dems have outspent the GOP in at least 1996, 2004, 2008 and 2012 (maybe). So, they're not hurting for cash in Presidential races. The point made on the radio program was a good one, which is in down ballot races is where the effect is greatest.

I feel like Hillary. I have everyone against me. How can I bet against my soul mate?

First, mentioning Mohammed is "being intolerant of Muslims", then mentioning Obama in a bad light is "racist", now mentioning Hillary in a bad light is "sexist". http://www.darkpolitricks.com/2015/04/msnbc-suggests-merely-talking-about-hillary-is-sexist

You forgot that mentioning any given Christian in a bad light is "war on religion," mentioning a bad event in American history is "anti-American," and mentioning growing wealth inequality is "class warfare."

You left out something about "reverse racism" and "destroying our morals with the gay agenda" please try again ;)

Scooby,

Do you really think Walker is going to flip any of the Obama states to his side? The guy is Paul Ryan without the extra time in the gym and we saw how well his schtick played on the national stage.

D@mn straight Flaggy! Given the "issues" most conservatives have with women that's not a tough leap to make in the minds of the American voter. Might as well get used to it. ;)

Handy, while I'm sure Scoobs is being sarcastic I was amused by the Walker boomlet which quickly started taking on water. He reminds me of how Tim Pawlenty was the next Reagan during his brief campaign until the actual voting started.

I suppose you'll next be telling us that black people can't be racist. And don't call them African-American, either; this guy was more of an African-American than at least 99.999% of them are.

I don't know, I don't run into a lot of them when I'm riding around in the back seat of my limo.

Since black people are people, black people can't not be racist.

Our brains were designed to make associations so that little flicker in the grass tiger run oops looks like cousin Ogg didn't make that connection fast enough. They do it even when the associations don't make any sense. If your brain is functioning, it's constantly creating hypotheses like whites can't jump, southerners are idiots, Asians can't drive, and black people don't tip, particularly if it's talking to other brains who have heard those theories from yet other brains. Parents' brains are particularly good at passing down stupid hypotheses to their children's brains, and unfortunately the stupider the brain the more likely it will mistake its false hypotheses as true because they're stupider.

Presto: racism.
