Also, I think at some point the GOP is going to have to plug their nose, admit the Southern Strategy has finally come home to roost, and pull the plug on the Tea Party. They'll have to convince their establishment backers that the short term (say a decade or two) of Democratic gains will be worth it in the long run. You have to cut out the cancer to get better. Right now the party is falling apart. If they want to remain a major party and still be invited to the adults table, they're going to have to get rid of the children from the party.

Again, I hope.

Re: Campaign 2016 - I'm Biden my time till I doctor the hearing.

My instinct is if it goes the other way the Tea Party will just swallow hard and fall in behind the mainstream guy, like they did with Romney. But when GOPers start insulting them, that raises the possibility that they'll just sit it out. I'm asking, does anybody think the mainstream GOP could actually alienate the TP enough for that to happen?

TPers sat out Romney, they'll sit out Rubio, Bush has no chance

The Democrats had to do it, and it cost them 12 years of Reagan-Bush and the erosion and finally overturning of a 54-year House majority. Now it's the Republicans' turn to exorcise the demon. Southern whites nearly killed the country in 1832, 1861, and during the civil rights movement, and they've been a menace for the country's whole history. Their Divine Right apartheid authoritarian mindset has always been a disease on the American body politic. First the Dems and then the Republicans gave them a home, and each time their infection has nearly killed the host.

It's time for them to finally go. Maybe like the German emigres after 1945 they can build a colony in the backwoods of Brazil. I don't care as long as we're rid of them.

TPers will fall in love with Rubio. He's currently in top sneak/snake position. Of all the GOP candidates I'd like to see him fall the most.

He's a weasel, but so was Dubya. The fundies will probably fall for him, but I don't see the hard core Constitution in my pocket next to my gun small gubmint types falling for it. He's almost as obviously empty-headed as 43.

My favorite knuck argument though is that Rubio and/or Cruz are going to win them Latinos. Um, guys... they're Cubans. Mexicans and Cubans do not care for one another. You're basically saying, "Israelis, Palestinians... meh, what's the difference, they're both Semitic!"

I see Rubio as the GOP's Obama. Shiny and diverse, but ... and ... uh ... what's he done and what's he really led again?

Obama had two things Rubio does not. First, he was inspiring. Rubio is a human equivalent of the WSJ editorial page: he merely parrots whatever the focus-tested conservative CW is. He has the charisma of a prospectus.

But more importantly, Obama came on the heels of the worst president in well over a century. Dubya was so inept and such a failure that Obama simply needed to have the opposite letter behind his name. Rubio will be going against Hillary who is more associated in the public mind with the most successful president in the last half century, and following Obama whose positives are still about 20 points above Dubya's going into the successor election.

Rubio has another big problem, which is the debates. Now I realize debates aren't always won on the merits -- the worst drubbing in presidential debate history was the first Gore-Dubya debate, and for that matter Nixon may have beaten JFK on the merits: sometimes, form beats content. But Hillary also wins the form comparison with Rubio among the people she needs to get to the polls: women, particularly first election women who typically have miniscule turnout and thus from who any bump could have very big results. You don't often have a "special interest group" of 51% of the electorate. :)

I don't think Rubio has any systemic advantage at all, and he strikes me as a very weak candidate. I'm much more worried about Cruz.

If you truly believe Hillary is going to be tough on Wall Street you're either delusional or you have a really interesting idea of what "tough" is. I suppose compared to the Republicans' "back the US Treasury truck up to the 1%'s house and dump" she would be tough, as she's only going to load up the truck and leave it running with the keys in it, but not drive it cross town to their house.

OTOH, if you vote for the Republican because you feel Hillary will be too easy on Wall Street, well, I can't help ya son.

Gore did lose badly to W.

Never forget the taxes question where W had simple terms we all loved. If you make $50,000 the cut will be X and you'll have 50k times X in your pocket

Algore instead goes "well I will have a credit for college. And a credit for this. And a credit for this."

Nobody wants to be told how to spend their money. It's THEIR money.

D never get that. Dummies

Evidence?

Just based on what I hear around me. I sure some held their nose and voted for Romney, others said who is better for my wallet(what they said not me) and voted for Romney. I think many sat it out.

This worked well 16  years ago. Goopers had this set up perfectly. Way more people thought they were paying the top tax rate than actually were, so when Bush pledged to bring down top rates half the country expected a tax cut. Oddly enough, and this has nothing to do with the Dem party, those smelly bahstids at Occupy Wall Street (and my own office building which is no where near Wall St ) coined the phrase "the 1%". Now when cons go around telling people how its a great idea to borrow money to pay for billionaires' tax cuts, Dems can merely reply that all those proceeds are going to "the 1%". Few people think they're making more money than 99% of the population, so the framing of the issue has shifted. It also doesn't hurt that the worst President in living memory, GWB, advocated tax cuts that benefited very few people.
