Apologies for the takedown but perhaps you can warm up to the idea of Hillary for Prez now that you realize her stances bear little resemblence to 70's Republicanism... ;)

I'm as hot for Hillary as I'm ever likely to be. A vote for her is a vote against the orcs. That's going to have to be good enough for you.

I'm just giving you a hard time but in all seriousness I do think its important to point out the vast differences between anybody the Dems would nominate and the Republicans, be it their past or current versions. Except for a small window in the mid 50's to early 60's Republicans have rarely been moderate for the times they lived in. Truth be told I was surprised how little they've changed after reading the '76 platform.

They've changed a lot, I think you're just reading that language in the light of the dumpster fire they've turned into. In 1976 the GOP proudly supported the Equal Rights Amendment. Now they believe feminism is demonic possession. In 1972 Nixon proposed a guaranteed income via a negative income tax. Now they want to wipe out Social Security and Medicare. They're messed up.

I completely agree with you that nobody the Republicans could nominate would be an acceptable choice. They've gone 'round the bend and until they suffer a Mondale-like electoral punishment they're only going to get more vicious.

Some points from the '76 GOP platform:

"The Republican Party opposes compulsory national health insurance. "

"Federal health programs should be consolidated into a single grant to each state, where possible, thereby allowing much greater flexibility in setting local priorities. "

"We protest the Supreme Court's intrusion into the family structure through its denial of the parents' obligation and right to guide their minor children. The Republican Party favors a continuance of the public dialogue on abortion and supports the efforts of those who seek enactment of a constitutional amendment to restore protection of the right to life for unborn children. "

"There should be considerable concern over the presence of several million illegal aliens in the country who fill jobs that otherwise would be available to American workers. We support increased efforts to deal more effectively with this problem and favor legislation prohibiting employers from knowingly hiring illegal "

"The Democrat-controlled Congress has produced a jumble of degrading, dehumanizing, wasteful, overlapping and inefficient programs failing to assist the needy poor. A systematic and complete overhaul of the welfare system should be initiated immediately.

The following goals should govern the reform of the welfare system: (1) Provide adequate living standards for the truly needy (2) End welfare fraud and prevent it in the future with emphasis on removing ineligible recipients from the welfare rolls, tightening food stamp eligibility requirements, and ending aid to illegal aliens and the voluntarily unemployed; (3) Strengthen work requirements, particularly directed at the productive involvement of able-bodied persons in useful community work projects..."

"Immediate removal of counter-productive bureaucratic red tape will eliminate hindrances to the exploration and development of hydrocarbons and other energy resources. We will accelerate development of oil shale reserves, Alaskan petroleum and the leasing of the Outer Continental Shelf, always within the context of preserving the fullest possible protection for the environment. We will reduce complexity and delays involved in siting, licensing and the regulatory procedures affecting power generation facilities and refineries.

Coal, America's most abundant energy resource, is of inestimable value to the American people. It can provide the energy needed to bridge the gap between oil and gas and nuclear and other sources of energy. The uncertainties of governmental regulation regarding the mining, transportation and use of coal must be removed and a policy established which will assure that governmental restraints"

"Our national defense effort will include the continuation of the major modernization program for our strategic missile and bomber forces, the development of a new intercontinental ballistic missile, a new missile launching submarine force and a modern bomber—the B-1—capable of penetrating the most sophisticated air defenses of the 1980's. These elements will comprise a deterrent of the first order.

We will increase our army to 16 divisions, reinforce our program of producing new tanks and other armored vehicles, and support the development of new, highly accurate precision weapons.

Our Navy, the guarantor of freedom of the seas, must have a major shipbuilding program, with an adequate balance between nuclear and non-nuclear ships. The composition of the fleet must be based on a realistic assessment of the threat we face, and must assure that no adversary will gain naval superiority.

An important modernization program for our tactical air forces is under way. We will require new fighters and interceptor aircraft for the Air Force, Navy and Marines. As a necessary component of our long-range strategy, we will produce and deploy the B-1 bomber in a timely manner, allowing us to retain air superiority.

Consistent with our total force policy, we will maintain strong reserve components.

Our investments in military research and development are of great importance to our future defense capabilities. We must not lose the vital momentum. "

" From America's grass roots to the White House we will stand united as a party behind a bold program of tax rate reductions, spending restraints, and regulatory reforms that will inject new life into the economic bloodstream of this country"

Sh !t Kep, I think you need to throw in the towel on this one. Hardly seems like the Hillary for Prez 2016 platform now does it? A better question would be has the GOP changed ANY since the 70's? Not much according to this....

That's a pretty good platform - considering (as JFK puts it) the time and the place. Revamp the DoD portions in light of the end of the Soviet Union and what's wrong with it today?

But would Jeb kill fetus Hitler?

So you kill Hitler. A now unchecked Stalin steamrolls into Europe, we have Allies vs. Soviets, and the events of Command and Conquer: Red Alert.

Chronosphere accidents everywhere. Nice going.

Or someone else fills the role in Germany. It's not like he acted in a vacuum, the country was more than willing to go along.

Way too early for this type of poll to mean too much right now, but it's still worth a second look since it's a MN only poll and our traditionally blue-voting history.

KSTP/SurveyUSA: Clinton Trails 4 of 6 GOP Candidates in Minnesota - link

Hillary Clinton appears to be the favorite to win the Democratic presidential nomination, but she has a lot of work to do if she's going to carry Minnesota in the general election.
According to our exclusive KSTP/SurveyUSA poll, Clinton trails four of the six leading contenders for the Republican nomination.

If the election were held today, Clinton would trail Ben Carson 50-41 percent, Marco Rubio 47-41 percent, Carly Fiorina 45-41 percent and Donald Trump by a 45-42 percent margin. Clinton is in a virtual tie with Jeb Bush, with Bush leading 44-43 percent. She leads Ted Cruz 46-41 percent.

The poll of 516 registered voters statewide has a margin of error of +/-4.4 percent. It was conducted Oct. 29 to Nov. 2.

ok then. if we are going to cut taxes to make corporations more competitive here. but eliminate them? and cut taxes generally to become 'fair'. of course the initial question was based upon the debt & deficit.

so do we move to income or sales? not both, right?

or does just the dem plan to hike the top 50% and spend that as soon as it comes in?
