Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

I stand by my comment that he's the single most embarrassing thing to happen in American politics in my lifetime.

Sister Sarah still gets my vote, as she was on a ticket. If Trump manages that, yeah, he takes the cheese.

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

There are no words. If that doesn't destroy his standing among Republicans, nothing will. He may as well have come out and said "Chevy sucks."

I'm not sure it will. The herpaderps never liked McCain since he was often too liberal for their taste. It's going to drive the moderates away, but let's be honest, he had absolutely no moderate Republicans behind him much less moderate independents.

He's just hurting the Republicans' chances in the general.

The herpa-derps also get a 4-hour-contact-your-physician erection at any mention of American soldiers in general and American POWs in particular. Now that gays are gone, it's God, guns, and grunts in the miasmatic mire of the rural right. You cannot take a cheap shot at any American soldier unless he's a Democrat.

Cruz doing the Texas Two Step to avoid condemning the comments probably won't hurt him since the Echo Chamber won't report it, but even he could get some stank on him if he's not careful.

More evidence that the Republican "every opinion I pull out of my butt is Absolute Truth and I will kill you if you disagree with me" can't subsist in anything but a homogeneous party.

Donald will jump up the polls ripping McCain. Not the other way around.

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

Donald or no Donald if Jeb is your frontrunner, what chance do they have? No one should say diddly squat about McCains service record. his record in the senate is another story.

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

Trump has to be a stalking horse.

He knows he doesn't have a prayer in hell and his name is mud anyway, so why not jump in, make a bunch of Fox-worthy comments to fire up the base, throw his infinite money around to woo the derp squad and diffuse the heat from the left, wait for the left to run out of poo to throw and the GOP to find a favorite who will now look like Dale Carnegie compared to him, then drop out and collect a few DKP from the GOP for playing ball.

Trump has to be a stalking horse.

If so, then why now? Just 8 years of the O finally teeing him off? Then why not in 2012?

No, this is all Trump's ego getting the better of him again. Except unlike with Trump Shuttle, where he was forced to admit his airline experiment was a failure and declare bankruptcy, this time there is pretty much no limit for him.

Bad news for Scooby.

If there's anything Scott Walker learned after his big Iowa speech in January that catapulted him to the national stage, it's this: don't take questions. That's precisely when his star began to fall—when he began talking off the cuff in February. First he turned vaccinations into a states' rights issue, next he dodged the question of evolution while speaking at a thinktank in the UK, then he compared unions to ISIS, and finally he roared into March by delivering the devastating news to the GOP base that a president couldn't singlehandedly overturn Roe v. Wade.

Basically, he's scared of speaking in non-scripted situations. Even Dunce 43 figured out how to do that.

As things move on they get closer and closer to an establishment candidate that only meets their plutocrat ideals and none of their others. McCain, Romney, and Bush will meet that criteria.

Sad.

It prevents a REAL debate on what the GOP really stands for. Remember while Bone Man chanted JOBS JOBS JOBS the number one issue the GOP was passing legislation across this nation was abortion. It wasn't even close.

That wasnt going to happen anyways this time round. There are too many people running many of whom ran last time. The party is too fractured and none of the candidates is good enough to really combine the bases and bring them out of the 1700s. Each one will play to their PACs and leave a lot of fresh meat for The PantSuit Machine to chew on in the general.

The GOP is going to have this problem until they have a shift in leadership. Running on failed ideas and money isnt going to work. They lose every demographic but one and that one is diminishing fast.

No one is ever strong enough to combine everything. Hillary is not going to combine things. George Bush I couldn't do it from the bully pulpit with Perot in the race. Clinton couldn't do it. Gore couldn't. GW didn't. No one does. It's not what I'm asking for.

When the GOP nominates moderates they're lying about who they are. When the Republicans took over the houses in Minnesota what did they spend their political capital on? It wasn't jobs, it was gay marriage and abortion. A big reason they got destroyed next time out. What has Walker spent his time on? Not jobs. What has Boner and McConnell spent their time on?

That's why we need a true believer this time. One that brings this debate on the highest political stage (Presidential debate) and runs on their true platform. Jeb won't do that.

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

They've had bits and pieces of the Republican Weltanschauung on past tickets. They had Dubya's bumblebrained born agin'ness, Palin's free range herpa-derpacity, McCain's bomb bomb Iran Neoconservatism, Ryan's privatize social security and Romney's idea of achievement as being born rich and civil service as vulture capital. Lump all that together and you've got the toxic waste dump that is the Republican mind.

You could have written this piece.

With Trump, though, there’s nothing to decode in his speeches, no dog whistles you have to strain to hear; it’s all loud and wrong and right there on the record, with no pretense of being anything but ugly and hateful. When Trump offers his thoughts on Mexican immigrants, he is clear and direct about the fact that this is what he truly believes. When he sends the press an 881-word essay saying that “the worst elements in Mexico are being pushed into the United States by the Mexican government,” and that “tremendous infectious disease is pouring across the border,” he is telling us, in no uncertain terms, that this is how he thinks. When he retweets supporters that Jeb Bush “has to like Mexican illegals because of his wife,” or that he should "Get to The WHITE House" (you know, to reclaim it from the black people currently living in it), he is sending a resounding message about who he is. Likewise, when Republicans applaud Trump for his honesty or claim he’s speaking for the American people, they too are telling us that Trump is expressing exactly what they think. Only out loud. And without the big show of pretending to be a decent human being that his competitors put on.

You are making false equivalences all over the place. This isnt Bush I or Clinton, this is a GOP party that has no identity outside of being on the wrong side of most social issues (compared to the majority) and using old Reagan economic policies to placate their corporate masters. They dont support science, they have no jobs plan, they want wars all over the place and dont want to fund them. Some of the candidates are full on fundies, some are tea party nimrods and some are full on wackos that only seem to care about the upper crust of this nation. Even the so called "true believers" like Rand tuck tail and run cause they know they have zero chance in the primaries if they arent bowing to the military and praising Jesus Christ and his First Knight Sir Ronald Reagan of Nazareth! The Libertarian Wing has been neutered because the fundies and the Koch's just have too much cash.

If this was a 3 person race you would be absolutely correct, you dont need to unite the bases you just have to convince enough of them to shift the tide. When 12 guys are running, and their platforms are a scatterplot of random GOP ideals ranging from moderate to lunatic across the board, you need a guy who can walk in and get everyone to say "that is our guy". Right now not one of these guys can do that even your precious Walker. Sure he talks the talk but he will buckle to public pressure just like the rest and his record is pathet-a-sad.

They wont put the true believer up though because they will go down like the Titanic. (as you pointed out with the Minnesota GOP) They can raise money talking about abortion, gay marriage and ObamaCare all they want to but fact is they got nothing to replace it and honestly they cant say we are worse off now than when Bush left office...not with a straight face anyways. (and I say this as no big backer of Obama for quite some time) You put a guy like Walker up who parallels Dubya in policy and who destroyed WI like Dubya destroyed America and you are looking at a laugher. Jeb may be dragged down by name but Walker will be destroyed by his actual record.

IMHO this is what the GOP needs, they need to get trounced and have the leadership implode. If that is why you ant Wlker to run then I change my tune and support you 100% :)

I want Walker to win the nomination because he is a true believer that reflects their true values. The McCain and Romney campaigns and nomination wins were pure BS. You may think they'll get trounced if they do, you may be right. That's not the point. The point is they run on A and deliver B. I'm sick of getting B when they run on A. Time to run on B in the first place so we can have a real debate and get the BS over with.
