Campaign 2016 - A Trump l'oeil? Kepler's Laws of Election Motions? Ship of Fools?

Re: Campaign 2016 - A Trump l'oeil? Kepler's Laws of Election Motions? Ship of Fools

I have to admit, at times it does feel like Trump is trolling the Republican lofos (as opposed to Bernie, who is genuinely trying to appeal to the Dem lofos). Can a man really be that dumb and successfully run an empire though four bankruptcies?

The answer is probably "Yes", if you're at least smart enough to hire the right lawyers.

Re: Campaign 2016 - A Trump l'oeil? Kepler's Laws of Election Motions? Ship of Fools

I just don't know what his endgame is. That's why I can't get around this idea he's sabotaging/trolling republicans.

Either that or there was a brilliant comment
You’re right. He is so arrogant that I wonder if something like his happened:

He and Bill are playing golf, and Trump is going on and on about some weird rich person stuff he’s been up to (laughing at the peasants, etc), and Bill’s like “Yeah, that’s cute and all, but I’ve been President. Talk to me when you run for president.” And then Trump is like “you know what, I will run, and I will run the BEST campaign is history.” And then Bill goes to home to Hillary and they laugh about how he just instigated some truly spectacular trolling.

Re: Campaign 2016 - A Trump l'oeil? Kepler's Laws of Election Motions? Ship of Fools

Boiled down, Trump’s appeal to the Republican Party’s base consists of his willingness to say nakedly racist statements and his promises to enact equally racist legislation. But why is that appeal surprising? In its contemporary manifestation, the GOP has repeatedly sought the support of voters who wish to disempower and intimidate racial minorities. This isn’t just about the party’s bizarre obsession with upholding the sanctity of the Confederate flag. To this day, for example, the party continues to advocate for Voter ID laws, which are ostensibly designed to combat in-person voter fraud—a virtually non-existent phenomenon—but in practice help prevent a disproportionate number of eligible non-white voters from actually voting. Its intellectual leaders have dismissed the ubiquitous threat of police violence towards black people as illusory.

Donald Trump’s popularity indicates that this country’s most fervent conservatives are primarily concerned not with reducing abortion rights, or repealing Obamacare, but rather with preserving white hegemony in the United States. For years and years, the Republican Party has happily accommodated these kinds of conservatives under the unspoken assumption that they would never be powerful enough to publicize their own candidate. Trump speaks to the error of that assumption.

Great piece.

If true, it is interesting to think that Trump's biggest accomplishment in life might be to open the eyes of so many to the fact that the Emperor is naked as a jaybird.

As an unintended consequence, yes. :p

Um... OK...

People close to former Vice President Al Gore, who won the popular vote in the 2000 election, have reportedly been discussing whether he could make another run for the White House

I'm not sure of the endgame here either for Trump. I think he's bored, which might be part of it. I also think he may be doing a lot better than he originally expected, and has decided to just run with it. Maybe he got in just to target Jebbers! Or maybe he wanted to settle a few scores. Regardless we're in uncharted waters here and unlike rumors such as Biden joining the race Trump is setting up a campaign apparatus in Iowa and New Hampshire. With 500 candidates in the race, he can win these places with 25% of the vote.

The problem with the "Trump helping the Clintons" meme is that it would suggest Trump would do anything to benefit anyone but himself. We know his ego would never allow it...

That said if it is true, then the Clintons by accident just performed one of the great sociological experiments of our time. Either we will see a massive implosion of the GOP (if Trump goes down he is burning every bridge and salting the Earth we know this) or it will prove that the people of this nation care more for being amused than they do about electing anyone of value. Is there enough Derp to win...

You hate the guy, but read Pat's last paragraphs. You and he are thinking alike albeit, I believe, from different directions.

My tinfoil theory is he's a stalking horse to draw heat away from other candidates and muddy the waters for the media circus.

Occam's Razor would lead me to believe he just has an ego the size of Neptune.

IF - big IF - he's doing it to help the Clintons, there could be some quid pro quos happening where he might be promised some favorable treatment from Billary.

On a side note, during Bill's term in office he was often called "Billary", based upon how politically active Hillary was as First Concubine. Would Hillary's term in office revive that term, or would she become Hilliam?

Yeah. Can't imagine the Clintons taking a risk on asking Trump to torpedo the GOP...they have been in the catbird seat and Trump has no problem telling the world about anything (including a Clinton inquiry). Could have gone very badly. It may appear that Trump's actions are what they would be if he secretly decided to wreck the GOP's chances. But his behavior also mirrors exactly what would happen if he was seeking to advance himself for financial and ego gains.

Oh...and Gore has signaled that he is not considering running in 2016.

From an observation of the persona the man has built for the last 30 years, this is the parsimonious theory.

Even though it's hilarious we as a country need Trump to crash and suffer third degree political and financial burns over 80% of his body so no billionaire will ever try this again. Rome lost their republic to independent generals -- the American anti-democratic equivalent has always been the super rich.

Just another reason for a top marginal income tax rate of 99%.

This is an interesting piece on Sanders from the Black Lives Matter perspective. The author is exactly wrong about the causal arrows between racism and poverty, but it's a clear and passionate argument that deserves to be read and understood.

While Pat went biblical, we definitely see eye to eye the possibilities of what happens when Trump crashes and burns...we just seem to want it to happen for different reasons. Ultimately though I think Pat and I agree it might be in the best interests of the party for that to happen. We need a conservative party, we dont need the derp parade the GOP has become.

Why Ann Coulter is a human being (the author's words). Surprising piece - written by a gay man.

https://broadly.vice.com/en_us/article/ann-coulter-is-a-human-being

Coulter is a professional troll in the literal sense. She's the political equivalent of Howard Stern. That's been obvious since all the pictures of her at Grateful Dead concerts showed up a decade or more ago.

If that's entertainment to you, no skin off my nose. But she's basically a Kardashian with an Ivy League degree and all about self promotion.

The industry term for what Coulter does is kayfabe. She learned there is an unlimited amount of herpa-derp wealth just waiting to be sucked up, as long as you can stand the stench. Coulter can, and it's made her incredibly rich.
