Just shows the sad state of affairs that, instead of actually fixing the tax codes and price floors to make us more competitive with the rest of the world, they'd rather bribe the companies to come back and keep the job-killing regulations in place, so they can just leave once the "promotion" runs out. We see it all the time with utility companies; now we know it's contagious...

that's how u.s. comsumers work. mookie plays off the mobile and cable guys every 5-6 months.

Very interesting piece on globalization and "economic nationalism." I'd be curious what those of you more economically educated than I (read: all of you) think.

Free trade is better for society as a whole, but sucks for those producers directly impacted. It's a tough sell because you're choosing to save 300 million people a few dollars but costing 10,000 people their jobs. And we spend very little of the savings on helping those 10,000 land on their feet.

In addition to this, it also helps keep competing nations from declaring war - either entirely or so quickly because if the US were to declare war on China, we would be adversely affecting our citizens domestically by way of economic hardships above and beyond the sacrifices a war already demands of a people.

I think there's a difference between then and now. The Germans now have corporations with large operations in France, and England, and Italy, etc., just as the US with ops in China and China with ops in the US. It's not just open trade, there are actual investments made in foreign countries. Those economic leaders will push, as much as they can, to avoid war because their investments are on the line. You know the foreign power will seize those investments as a matter of course. Add to that, we have more transparent information - no, nowhere near perfect, but it will help the various parties keep from the road to ruination.
