Business, Economics, and Taxes: Eat Cereal for Dinner

Dumb question for, I dunno, Michiganers and Vermonters maybe.

Those are lumber tarriffs. Why don't we import timber and just mill our own lumber? Derp job source, even.

I assume we are not timber self-sufficient unless we destroy our forests, which, no.
The mills I know of in the US, not all that many, focus on hardwoods. Those are the types of wood used for building furniture. Cutting boards, and such. I know there are regional mills for the construction grade lumber, but they’re not interested in working with people like us. The hardwood mills deal with the specialty made-to-orderfurniture shops, generally low-volume buyers, and people like me who might buy a few times year.

A lot of Maine logs go right into Quebec without going on a public road. They go on a private road from north Maine woods right into Quebec. Comes back as Lumber. Canadas Irving Oil has a huge saw mill in Ashland Maine and owns millions of acres of the north Maine woods. There is a local company that has opened saw mills that were shuttered and they are trying to Cut it, mill it and retail it out of there own stores up here. They are still open so must be working to some extent.

Someone on Bluesky made the comment that traditional stock market forecasting is based on Monte Carlo simulations. This is straight sabotage.

I sure get the feeling this was what Russia was like in the late 90s / turn of the Millenia. Straight gaming the system by those who can, and everyone else is going to fight for scraps. Those in cities are going to have better resources, the rurals will be further shut out.

It will be fascinating to see how this plays out because a large majority of the country has their heads in the sand and the media is doing its best to keep the reality quiet. It’s likely that job losses are going to come quickly and unexpectedly for people.

I think that most of America doesn't think this can happen to them (Red OR Blue). 2008 is a distant memory for many (and not even a blip on the road for most).

If you think the begging to Dump on social media is creepy now, wait until they start losing their houses.

(And then they'll be in the streets trying to reach out to him, labeled as "protesters" and then shot by the military)
