I really hope this is some sort of dig I'm not familiar with because that would be hilarious.

Its people who have made a fortune working in tech at a young age who dress like d-bags and pretend to be uber liberals but are really just fuckwit Libertarians who think because they got lucky everyone can. The type of tools who drive a Tesla for status so they look environmentally conscious but paid for it with money they made on Bitcoin and fly everywhere on their private jet. The type of clowns who have ruined almost all of San Fran and bitch about the taxes they never have to pay. They cry "personal freedom" while robbing everyone of theirs, take zero responsibility for any of the damage they cause and when they are called to the principals office throw up their hands and say say "who could have known it would end so badly?!?!?" despite literally everyone saying exactly how it would go.

At least Nazis are in your face telling you who they are...these Dude Bros are the enemy within. They aren't hard to find because they love to hear themselves talk and every fucking piece of crap syllable makes you want to punch them in the throat and force them back in their parents basement with their D&D fellowship. They are a fucking virus, the 21st century of the robber barons of the Gilded Age. They consume everything and destroy everything they can.

That probably doesn't collect enough revenue. Now, 90% with a personal exemption of $200,000...
Still not enough. In rough numbers, 200k puts you in the top 5% of incomes. I think are ~100m households, so we’re talking about the top 5M households. Those households took down about $4.5T of income (setting aside the unrealized gains rabbit hole). $200K exempted each takes $1T off the table. 90% of $3.5T is just $3.15T of revenue against federal spending around $6.8T.

The $200k exemption just takes too much income out of the equation - probably needs to be down around $150k.

That seems off somehow. There's ~14T of household income, so you only need to get half of that (ignoring corporate and other taxes). For the 97% @ 45k to be correct, that means that 6.8 / .97 = 7.01T of income would be above the line, and 7T below the line. If you divide 7T into 45K chunks, that means there would have to be 155M taxpayers. There are about that many returns filed each year, but a great many of those would be *less* than 45K, so there would need to be a whole lot more than 155M taxpayers claiming that 45K exemption.

Care to share more of the data behind your calcs so I can see where I'm not thinking this through correctly?

Edit: per Sources of Federal Government Revenue | U.S. Treasury Data Lab (usaspending.gov), individual income tax currently only provides $2T of revenue, with other sources providing the other $2.05T. So if you only cared about making rich people take on the burden of the current revenue, Kepler's proposal would work just fine (90% above $200K). If you also wanted to close the budget gap ($2T replacement + $2.8T gap), then you're probably talking 90% above $100K or so...

It is. I missed the entire top 1% (yeah, i know...) Woof. I've also went right to the horse's mouth and got the census survey for household income and calculated the incomes as a function of percentile myself.

So I take each block of 1,300,000 families and then assign that group a household income. I multiply the HH income by # of families to get total income for that percentile group. I set an income level to tax above (exemption). I then set an initial tax % to tax HH income above the exemption [ (HH Income - Exemption) * Tax% = Tax revenue]. I have a table calculate that for each 1% block. I have a macro that goal seeks for each income bracket until you get to 100% tax rate. The problem is that the wealthiest 1,300,000 make an absolute assload of money (even more than I thought which is surprising in itself).

The data is problematic because the 90.7k-household sample doesn't include any household incomes above $2.94M. Sigh.

So I'm not sure how to correct for this. I guess I could take the total household income and scale my data table above accordingly. I don't love that. BUt maybe it's possible.

Also problematic is the fact that the highest earning households earn so much, it's hard to account for them because you start to get into percentiles that you can't differentiate because of the "small" sample size. So again, I don't know how to fix this.

So here are my updated but not quite correct results.

Using this method, I can only account for about $12.7T in HH income. So I think the results here have % that are too high for a given exemption. So for that 30% @ $65k, the real result might be (doing a quick scale) 30%*12.7/14 = 27.2%

Edit to add:
Here's why this is hard. If you look at the 98-99% percentile, you get a collective income of $646 B. If you take just that next 0.5% (99.0-99.5%), you get $459 B. So it's hard to get percentiles that are small enough where they actually start earning less as a group than the previous group size (1% vs 0.5%). I suck at explaining. Anyways. Even going out from 99.9% to 99.99%, you get a collective income of $318 B compared to the entire 98-99% at $646 B. Obviously this all makes sense mathematically and given how bad income disparities are. I just don't know how to fix it.

These guys have apparently been doing this for 20+ years.

I could read through their methodology to try and get better data but blech.

Updated because trying to paste values around I accidently did formulas instead of values so they screwed up the tables. Corrected now.
