Not in my area but the closer you get to the city that becomes more true.

Airbnb and Uber sounded like good old fashioned great deregulated competition strategies for a healthy capitalist economy. The ramifications of that have been devestating.

Both industries did not need to be smashed, they just need better oversight by people who don’t have heavy investments in those sectors.

Both Uber and Airbnb are two of the worst things in our economy.
 
The taxi industry absolutely needed to be dismantled. Perhaps not the hospitality industry (at least, it needed substantial reform), but I'll go to the mat and say that the way this country manages taxi services is outrageous and needed to end.

Pretty much every rentable property in my town and surrounding area are short term rentals. Local paper has five listings available for long term rental, several of those just being a single room. For $1000/month.

Not to mention, but after the 2008 collapse, much of the foreclosed or otherwise available housing was bought up by venture capitol firms solely for the purpose of vacation and short term rentals.

The rich will always get richer.

It needs to be dismantled by having efficient public transportation, not with “gig economy” BS. Uber is just straight up worker exploitation and consumer exploitation while Airbnb is a denial and exploitation of basic human rights for the sake of entertainment.

How would you fix the taxi and hotel industries? But you have to make sure all workers make a livable wage.

Hotels wont happen unless they fully unionize. The companies that own hotels are friggin strong and own properties everywhere.

Uber was friggin mobbed up from the start which is why Lyft was what a lot of drivers left for (way back) but now they are both just ridiculous.

I will say, part of the problem is too many people are trying to turn the gig economy into their actual full time employment. That is not what it was meant for.

And that's exactly why it shouldn't exist. It's exactly why the whole "gig economy" shouldn't exist. There's enough work for people to make a living wage so people should be making a living wage on the work.

It's a side job, and never should have been made into a primary source of income.

NO! It can absolutely be a primary income. There is absolutely enough work for it to be a primary source of income, it just needs to be paid as such. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHY THE ENTIRE CAB INDUSTRY EXISTED!
 
As someone who drives for Door Dash/Uber Eats, it would be helpful if I didn't keep seeing "$4.00" come up for orders. That may or may not include tip.

Door Dash is also screwing its drivers further by saying "if you don't have a 50% acceptance rate, you'll keep seeing low ball orders come up."
