Interesting. With the b*tching in the comment sections and all the news articles from the Great Lakes states, they make it sound like they're in the Southeast.

Part of the problem is the steady and constant raising of prices. The prices may be in line with income but when say, my house goes up 100K in 3 years with no work added to it that is a warning sign.

The left’s solution is don’t build any new housing in our communities so don’t think that helps either.

Um, no Drew. The left's solution is to build multi-family housing rather than more overpriced McMansions, which causes the right to be classist and clutch their pearls about transients and renters.

There is plenty of housing available...people dont want to pay the prices.
Most of that “available” housing is either owned by huge corporations renting out at exorbitant prices or off the market because the owners are only “renting” it out on Airbnb.

Banning Airbnb would be a good start.

NIMBYism is not "owned" by any particular ideology, so finger pointing on that angle is silly.

But the fact is, we have a crisis-level housing shortage in the US and there are many causes for it:
  • General lack of supply where people actually want to live
  • Investment properties solely dedicated to short-term rentals ("summer rentals" have always been a thing, but Air BnB obviously substantially increased that).
  • NIMBYism
  • ... like dozens more
  • Construction material supply chain issues?
This is an incredibly complicated problem and we get nowhere by standing around and pointing fingers.

Agree with this 100%.

I was going to add a story I heard the other day to my earlier post. A guy I work with who lives around 30-35 miles from Boston in a decent late 90’s/early 00’s subdivision told me one of his neighbors just sold his house for $1.1MM. He said it’s just an average three bedroom, two bathroom colonial. Some couple from out west bought it sight unseen.

Better find a way to elect a lot more Democrats or get Republicans who actually give a shit into office then. Cause right now there is literally half the country who doesn't care.

I very much agree, and I'd go further to say we need more open-minded people at the local zoning/planning board level too, as those folks have the greatest direct impact on new construction.

I am 100% for open minded people. Too much of the politics I watch every day is closed minded buffoonery.

And a point of clarification. "Open Minded" doesn't mean chuds like Joe Rogan. A little ability to filter out insanity is required.

edit: Basically. If you hear Jordan Peterson and don't immediately roll your eyes, then I don't want to hear from you.

You missed ...
  • Skilled construction workforce, or workforce in general
  • Electronic/electrical supply chain issues (my company can't get controllers for the machines we build for the construction industry)
I have not been to a factory containing a machine I build/work on that does not have "Help Wanted" out front.

Open minded doesn't need to mean that alternative facts is really a thing. Facts are facts.

Yeah, this one topic liberals have to look themselves in the mirror on, at least in certain areas of the country.

VT and CA are two of the bluest states and also two of the most restrictive when it comes to home development. State level gov seems to be finally starting to fight local gov on it in CA.
